But while Matthews’ coaching record now stands up as the best in the game’s modern-day history, another of the AFL’s current coaches is closing in on an unwanted record.

Adelaide coach Gary Ayres – who has coached the Crows for the past four years after leading Geelong for the previous five years before that – became only the fifth coach in history this season to notch up 200 games as a coach without winning a premiership.

Ayres has now coached a total of 210 games without landing a premiership which only puts him behind John Northey (315 games), Bob Rose (281 games), Bill Stephen (258 games) and Wally Carter (214 games) as the game’s longest-serving non-premiership coaches.

I think it depends.

If we go the way we have the last couple of years and try to top up our list with experience and go for band-aid solutions then Ayres must at least get to the Grand Final or pay the consequences.

If we bring in some young players and really look to change the look of our team and reinvigrate the player list then I think the team can go backwards a little and still look at it as being an acceptable year.

The problem we face is that Ayres possibly knows he is under pressure and will attempt to go with option 1 out of self preservation.

I have said before I would like Nigel Smart to one day coach the Crows but that is not an option in the near future.

I don't think we should go for Neil Craig.

Does anyone realistically think Ayres will still be coach of the Crows in 2005?

Only if there is a GF appearance in 2004 (Wizard Cup doesn't count, Gary!!!)
