But while Matthews’ coaching record now stands up as the best in the game’s modern-day history, another of the AFL’s current coaches is closing in on an unwanted record.
Adelaide coach Gary Ayres – who has coached the Crows for the past four years after leading Geelong for the previous five years before that – became only the fifth coach in history this season to notch up 200 games as a coach without winning a premiership.
Ayres has now coached a total of 210 games without landing a premiership which only puts him behind John Northey (315 games), Bob Rose (281 games), Bill Stephen (258 games) and Wally Carter (214 games) as the game’s longest-serving non-premiership coaches.
