Will take his career any day of the week and we lose a great club man. Glad he got a medallion after a career where a lot of the time got a lot of unwarranted abuse.

Be interesting to see if he gets a gig elsewhere and who gets to replace him in 2020.

All the best Masto!
Yes, it will. I'm tipping Barrass, Waterman, Cole, Duggan, Sheed, JK, Hickey as leading candidates for designated Whipping Boy. Some on here have been practising on them for some time.

Nelson has got this. Poor fella.

Well done Masten, not a massive fan, but he never picked himself. seemed a good clubman, and gave all he had. good luck in getting another year or two elsewhere.

Vale Masto - the little engine that kinda could.

I became more and more of a fan of Masten over the journey, probably because of how unfairly maligned he became. Few moments have pleased me more in these last couple of years than instances of Masto fighting above his weight division, effecting spoils against taller players and laying surprisingly effective tackles. Every time I'd yell "onya Masto!" to rage, rage against the endless Masto hate in the stands.

The great 21st century poet Drake once said "they scream out my failures and whisper my accomplishments" - and the same can be said of Masto's play.
Derided more than any other for his mistakes, appreciated less than any other for his good work. They remember the failed fend offs and fluffed passes but don't remember the lung busting runs to provide outlets to our defenders when the ball is in danger of being turned over or the defensive running to fill space when the ball was turned over.

Lost in the discussion of Masto's value to the 22 in the past couple of years is how good he once was. Between 2012 and 2015, he was a genuinely good player in his own right. In 2012 and 2013 he in the conversation in terms of being our most effective midfielder.

He might not have quite been what we expected from pick 3 in the wake of losing Chris Judd, but he was a very good servant of the club. He'll remain in that exclusive group of players that got to hold the ball on the siren of a winning grand final, and that means something. Onya Masto.

I remember getting a question through to JK on one of the club website live chats in '09 or '10. I asked him who he was excited to see develop through our midfield and was met with an instant reply: "Chris Masten". Reckoned he had the best kick of the mids.

The Masten - Kennedy connection went on to be one of our most reliable scoring avenues for a few years (obviously, others were also emerging like Shuey and later Gaff, but Masten really was the great hope for a couple of years).

I'd say that his best game was in 2011 vs Brisbane. I think it was a wet day, we went in heavy favourites and Brisbane took it right up to us, possibly even holding the lead in the 4th. Enter Masto. After struggling to find the ball for half a season, he turned out 31 possessions, 4 marks, 7 tackles and 3.1 (including the match-winner from an HTB free-kick) on the night to carry us over the line. All off a HF flank. IIRC he was our best player by far, a testament to the ability that was there. In case you're interested, Matty Priddis had 24 kicks and 1 handball that game. Oof.

I’ve given Masto a bit s**t at times over the years but he’s a hard bloke to hate. Great clubman who seems to be loved by his teammates. Limited player in ways but gave his all and goes out a premiership player for the club he’s loved his whole life. Congrats, Masto! Hope to see him get another opportunity somewhere else.

I will never understand why he was so maligned. His disposal isn’t always elite but he runs like a wind-up toy, creates space and options like few others on our list could, and always gave everything he had for the club he loved.

He’s got more talent and heart in his pinkie finger than most of us have in our whole body.

Thanks for everything Masto, we’ll miss you.

Congratulations Chris. 200 plus games at an AFL club with a premiership medal is a wonderful achievement . Thanks for your service to our club. All the best in your future . Cheers.

Pretty sad. Thought he could have been few times for a year or 2 as depth.

I had my F U Masto moments during games. But great servant, clubman and got the most out of himself.

Rolling the dice on a pick 3, you'd take his career over the unknown every day of the week.

Hope he goes to a contender and not a basket case club.

Generally don't post when opposition players retire, but have always taken an interest in Masten's career, given the Judd trade.

I know he has been very much maligned by many of your supporters, he has his flaws, just like every player

To achieve what he has, given less than 5% of players play 200 games or more, and a flag, I would suggest he would be proud of his career, as should club supporters

Well done Masten

Bit surprised that the club wouldn't offer him another contract tbh. Thought they'd still view him as serviceable depth.

Him being delisted doesn't mean he wasn't offered a contract. Being delisted allows him to be a free agent. We may have offered him a deal but he knows a better deal is available. We do him a solid by delisting (as the other team likely wouldn't trade) and he gets to his destination of choice.

Great clubman and gave fantastic service to the club he grew up loving. 200 + games and a premiership medallion...there are a lot of current and former AFL players who would love to have achieved that by the end of their career. Congratulations Masto.
