Autopsy That Game vs St Kilda That Never Happened

I didn’t watch the game beyond 5 minutes into the 2nd which was enough to know it was over. That’s how predictable we are.
I looked at the stats this morning. Essentially all their plans came off & were allowed to continue for 4 quarters.
Keep the ball off Brayshaw, Serong, Bolton & Treacy. Allow MJ, Sharp, Wagner and others with questionable decision making & disposal skills to help themselves.
Camera behind Johnson first quarter. He stands with the ball, players lead towards him into space. He stands there like a stunned mullet till play on is called then hoofs it up the line to an outnumber in their favor. Next possession misses a handball for a turnover and they score. Sharp’s first. OOBOTF. Next one he misses everything for a boundary throw in. Meanwhile Hill is running riot with no one near him.

I could go on but what’s the point. Brayshaw saying the half time message was stick to the plan is all you need to know.

I think this playing group is capable of more.

The coach must go.

Kicking down the line happens because after they take the mark they take too much time thinking about the next play that all the options close up and that becomes there only somewhat best option
.
Problem is even when kicking it high or down the line to a contest it seems out players get out marked or more problematic is when it hits the ground it's the oppo that seems to be able swoop onto it
Our crumbing skills are deplorable
Freddy basically won’t do it and he is at the drop of most of those contests , Switta , not sure what he does …. runs around a lot . Murphy Reid needs a few more years in his legs .
Dudley is a goer , natural tough little footballer. Could do with more of him in a bigger version.

Making the ground big only comes from gut running and confidence in execution, most of our team won’t do those things

It’s unreal how bad this club damages itself.

We don’t get a lot of chances at genuine national FTA primetime. Losing is one thing, but to put up a show so bad that you guarantee that any casuals will never want to watch you again is another.
The panel on Fox absolutely roasted us last night
Was hard to watch

Also maybe the dreaded slow build up style and working from stoppage to stoppage is unfortunately designed and built on the players we have

We all want this fast speed on the ball run and gun style. However, the reality is when we go into a fast shootout we usually lose. We either cough it up in one of the last chain, majority of the players don't have the gut running like brayshaw to play this outside of short bursts and when we turn it over our def is useless 1 on 1

I'm just pointing out that maybe it's a bit more complicated that you're seeing. And that's OK.

I hope Freo management see everything and make appropriate changes.

Yeah, BeinPurplenGreen, it's a little too complicated for you to understand.

You don't have the brain capacity for the ultra-complicated nuances. You need to be really, and I mean really really intelligent to be able to see it clearly.

Just in case King Huskii is reading this, the above is sarcasm.

Credit to Wagner, Serong, Brayshaw, Dudley at was 16, 8, 8 and 8 tackles. At least they put in some effort.

A few of these get a pass, but I really doubt they all put in enough effort.

Treacy was double team most of the day, we didn't help him at all. Young was injured. Chapman has Higgins.

Switta, Bolton, Narkle, Reid, Frederick all need a kick up the arse. I wish we had some depth so we can drop a few of them.

It's funny. Apart from his obvious skill errors, I thought Bolton was on his own in at least flying the flag and trying to show a bit of mongrel. They'll have to sit around and talk about their feelings a bit more, and I'm sure they can get some more apathy into his game by the end of the year.

I only watched a half, but didn't notice him other than giving away 2 or 3 free kicks. At no point did he look like he would turn the game for us, like a Horne-Francis or another dominate mid-fwd could do.

Actually the Saints did really well at closing off the 45 infield kick all night, forcing us to kick down the line. What was worse was the long bombs into the 50 with the ball immediately coming back out again. It seemed like every ground ball would end up with the Saints.

Yeah he was definitely off skill-wise. I don't think there's a single player that could hold their head up after that performance. But at least in the first half, when the team was getting bullied, I thought he tried to push back and show something.

Yes. Melbourne 2.0 and we still have no plan for it.

Pearce and Dudley…Wagner at least tackled.

That’s it

The trouble started last week
When I saw Caleb Serong looking smug in the rooms ,i.e drinking the cool aid last week after beating the lowly Crows I knew we were on hiding to nothing, not just last night but until there's wholesale changes in this group
Mentally soft
The whole group went into this season thinking a top 4 spot was sown up before the first ball waa bounced
time to start again with a new coach and a new plan
Glad I saw this coming in March, otherwise I'd be devo'd today

So there are 3 sports that I watch regularly - soccer (EPL), basketball (NBA) and footy. Somehow I have managed to pick 3 of the most infuriating teams to support - Arsenal, Philadelphia 76ers and the Dockers. For those of you who follow NBA, the 76ers has had an absolute disaster of a season, and this is on the back of coming into the season as a supposedly championship contender after a few inconsistent seasons, where they look in the regular season but completely flame out in the playoffs when the whips get cracking. Basically a long winded way to say that I feel well equipped to recognise players/teams that are mentally weak, and right now, the parallels between the 76ers and the Dockers aware so damn uncanny it’s not even funny. And this movie isn’t going to end well unless there’s a massive change from a culture standpoint, because as it has been mentioned countless of times here, we are just so f**cking soft, both physically and mentally. There simply has to be a change, and as much as I loathe the idea of firing a coach mid season as it feels like most of the time, we need a scapegoat to place the blame on why things have gone so bad, but it is clear as day that JLo is part of the problem and should be moved on, especially since there are suitable candidates out there to replace him…

I’m all for supporting a team through thick and thin, but I really feel like I’m pretty close to breaking point…my 11 year old son (who I’m concerned has taken on some of my bad habits at raging at the TV or the stadium when watching the Dockers play) asked whether we should be supporting another team, and for the time my in my life, I’m ashamed to say that I briefly entertained the idea, though at this stage, I’d much rather just give up watching footy all together..FML…

I'll give you Wagner and Dudley. But Pearce is supposed to be a leader of this club. Where was his leadership? He was playing for himself.
Won a few good intercept possessions but lost his direct opponent, guarded a lot of space, slowed the ball movement and as you say no leadership mongrel that was visible on telly - maybe Sumwun or someone that was at the game can comment on what he showed as a leader

Pearce and for parts of the game Jackson were the only two who weren't complete dogs**t.

If we're talking leadership, Serong? Brayshaw? Putrid and never fired one single shot. Pearce at least played decent for periods of the game.

thought he showed way more initiative with the ball than anyone else in the team tbh, attacked the ball hard when it was in dispute and had a couple of really nice kicks. much more of a leaders game than our other blokes

Crowd: 20,522 at Marvel Stadium

Please AFL, take the hint from the crowd, for everyone's sake, never give Freo a prime slot again until we have years of credibility to erase the embarrassment that we have been and are and will be for some time yet.

In fairness, it’s not our fault the crowd was so low.

The whole of level 1 was reserved seating…did the Saints really think they were going to fill that whole level up?

Morons!

Also Saints fans are notoriously fair weather so last night is mainly on them

Exactly. Kicking down the line is necessary sometimes. You would think that we realize it is a priority to set up well around the fall of the ball when it happens. Never have anyone out the back and are always second to the ball when it hits the ground. Same thing happens in the backline when the ball hits the ground.
