Hawks trade for McEvoy. It was exactly what they needed yes they had to cough up pick 17 and Shane savage but they have a sound 24 yr old ruckman. He is already an improvement on bailey.

Common bondy we need a key forward( I'm no talking about JPod or gumbleton) be bold and audacious.

Much harder to get guys to move west - esp if they are non-WA boys to start with. That is our biggest problem, not anything to do with being an undesirable club - just the tyranny of distance.

They got a ruckman who is slow and can't jump, and ranks as perhaps the #10 ruckman for a 1st rounder. I thought it was an ordinary trade BUT, both sides got what they wanted I guess.

Trading is overrated, why part with picks/players when we have shown that we can get quality players for free through FA & the draft.

I agree. I think the only way we can trade for forwards is by luring the weagles forwards with a big pay day, or doing so with the boys drafted from WA, especially if they're from regional areas. Country boys love coming home.

Have to agree with this. Which is why I'm a bit disappointed at why we're not pushing for a 19-year old future loose, tall, rebounding defender in Yeo – a nice Johnson replacement.

They may also want to teach him how to actually win a ruck contest before they get too excited.

Completely agree,

Though they have a game plan that doesn't rely on a dominant ruck, just the mobility to drift forward to kick a few goals and to plug a few holes.

except he's about 5 cm shorter. maybe more of a duffield replacement.

I think this very much, they wanted another big body to drift forward with Buddy leaving, from the stats I've seen BigBoy has the lowest percentage of hit out wins for a full time ruck in the league, but is otherwise very good around the ground for a big man.

Jhonno is a freak for his size though, there aren't many in the game at his height with his evasion and disposal skills.
I see Yeo as another Ibbo /Duffield as some others have mentioned and that prototype is becoming a really effective cog in our machine so only see positives in having a plug and play replacement.
Excuse the ignorance but how highly rated is Yeo's disposal ? He has all the other attributes to demand a high second rounder but if we're going to usurp WCE with an earlier pick I'd hope the one skill that is difficult to improve and vital to our defenders is above average...

Hawks just demonstrated the best way to improve their list. They had a clear need for a ruckman - they go and get one and compensate the Saints for it. They already have a good list with AFL ready players waiting in the 2's, so 1st round pick not so important this year. They just sorted their ruck issue for a few years to come

We have clear needs, we should be prepared to trade to address them. J-pod is very short term, Gumby a risk. Picking up discards or gambling on free agency is not the same as targeted trading.

Problem for us in regards to targeted trading is there's not a great deal of WA Key Forwards out there which, for us, is the big selling point to lure someone to the club. Our best chance recently was Mitch Clark but we know how that ended.

WA Options:
Joel Hamling - Cats - 194cm but only 80kg
Mitch Clark - Demons
Mason Shaw - Port
Aaron Black - North (just re-signed)

Pretty ordinary reading to be honest. Basically means we would have to pay a player more than they are worth to get them to cross the nullabor.
