I know that we are in love with our shiny new toys of the 24’ draft crop, but I think it’s not often discussed the importance of the 21’ draft crop to our rebuild.

Josh Gibcus
Tom Brown
Tyler Sonsie
Sam Banks
Judson Clarke

These guys are just as important as the 24’ kids to our development.

We’ve seen what Gibcus can do, we just need his body to hold up. Brown has developed nicely alongside an experienced back 6. Sonsie showed signs in 2022 but hasn’t progressed. His VFL suggests his ability has a clearance player but will we see that in the VFL. Banks has showed promising signs early as a wingman, developing his running ability nicely. Clarke was exciting early as a small forward then spent time in the VFL before doing an ACL. Since then, he’s spent time adding some string to his bow and could see him in a new role.

Bonus points for players from other drafts and rookie spots (eg McAuliffe and Fawcett 2023 Draft Campbell 2023 Rookie Green 2022 Draft) to become regular tigers, Campbell looks to have a breakout year.

This is an exciting time at Tigerland!

Brown & Banks are coming along nicely and now getting games , We need to get them to 50-70 games
Clarke was going the best until the knee. Gibcus well this kid is going to be a star if we get his body fixed

Its the bullshit that all clubs and coaches tell us that takes most kids to get to the level to perform to the level they project them to be when drafted.

But hey if you call bullshit who are the coaches and clubs to argue with your view
Mate the average footballer plays 100 games. !50 is great any more games they are elite. It's the same in soccer I see my club thread ohh 23 he's still a kid ohh goalkeepers aren't much good till 30 so on it is all BS If there good enough they show it from the start yes by the time they get too 50 they have improved but waiting for a player to get there and hope they improve well. I watched the Greece scotland game and the coach cracked the poos with the mature players and played youngsters 17 to 21 year old and they thrashed them in scotland. Bottom line they have it or they don't.

LOL average footballers have nothing to do with the argument about players getting to 50+ games to show their end potential

Players could be at a club for 7 years and only get to 50 games so your argument is Rubbish

Move on

Banks and Brown are gonna be good solid AFL players in the mould of Lambert/Pickett/Baker etc., Gibcus is probably the only one with elite potential. I like Juddy but he needs to find more of the ball and we obviously need to see how he looks coming back.

Sonsie is the hardest to place. He’s clearly too good for VFL and his first season was really good, but can’t seem to find any form at afl level.

If Gibcus comes good this draft could be the draft before the draft (I.e Cats 99 draft setting up their 01 draft or Hawks 01 draft complimenting their 04 draft) still handy to get 2 guys at least out of it.

2025 will reveal alot about the crop of 2021
Players like Banks & Brown look to be establishing themselves as AFL players and Clarke was already getting regular games and making an impact when he went down. Gibcus is the player we really need to get back from his injuries as he is the player with the most talent.

Seen Gibcus in the rooms after the game and has he been hitting the gym in his time off the legs
Looks like a massive unit now

How did you manage to sneak past the doorman on the gym?!?

OMG this 50 70 game BS.

It’s not BS. The AFL is a completely isolated league. It is a considerably higher standard than the next best league (VFL) - in particular the gap between the best players in the AFL v best players of the VFL. As a result most players need experience at the level to reach their potential.

Banks is the clear standout for mine, a young leader and hard working and looks like the other defenders trust him.
Brown is more a receiver than a defender. Too short for the KPF and I’ve seen alotve small fwds score on him. He does have a big repertoire of kicks and a good looking style but the physical stuff of winning his own ball and out bodying his opponent isn’t in his game.
I’m not sure he’ll be a running H/B, he doesn’t seem to have the tricks or the pace to get from inside to outside.
Sonsie, apparently was identified as an A grader at 14 but I dont think he’s proven himself anymore than a C grader, like others have said he probably gets shut down in match sims at training as a mid and hasn’t earned his position in the 1sts. Hardwick didn’t play him there, Mini didn’t and Yze isn’t, there’s obviously a reason behind it and he wouldn’t be taking Cambpells spot, Lalor, Greens or Mansells forward or Shorts, Brown’s or Banks behind the ball so I think he’s become a depth player at best now.

Looking forward to seeing Gibcus and Clarke have a run this year and get confident after the injuries.

Agree but they have to have potential to show it.

Great post. Totally agree. To me it's always been the true start of the rebuild with the success rate of these picks critical for our projected rise up the ladder. If they all were to come good and be regular best 22 guys then you have rejuvenated a big chunk of our team in one year.

Only thing I guess though is that we didn't invest in talls properly unti last year who normally take a bit longer, however, if we have a more mature and experienced side feeding it to guys like Faull and Armstrong, we may well see them develop a lot faster than the norm.

I think last year was the perfect storm of injuries, first year for Yze, being down on confidence after the Dimma era and we may well turn things around a lot quicker if we just get enough natural improvement across the list and we get another couple of years into Yze to develop.

If we can keep bringing that intensity that we showed in the Carlton and GC games, we are going to jump a few more sides this year.

I think this crop have a hall pass for being "slow boomers" due to the shitshow they walked into with DimmA being obsessed with "the last dance". From all reports the divide between the seniors & kids was always poor under his reign after our success & it made it very difficult to integrate new kids into the team, unless they were playing very niche roles like Stack, Higgins etc

The promising thing is that Gibcus ,& Clarke looked the most promising & they have been MIA due to injury. How quickly our future could turn tho is very much the unique blend that the 21 & 24 crop create. The 24 crop look more like "quick starters" whereas 21 crop are "late bloomers". What we might see tho is in 2 years all 10 kids start to bolt towards their peak ceiling & that will be a huge jump. It's been great to see Brown & Banks make meaningful growth. Sonsie is a bit lost, but still got time. Interesting times ahead
