Often mid-week I find myself pondering through statistics from the match prior. I have always found that to be a good way of analysing players as to why they are the best or conversely why they may stay in a side when to the eye they haven’t contributed much.

Stats can often be misleading; disposal efficiency for one can be favourably skewed by long kicks over 40m to a contest for example; or negatively impacted if the player you kick it to drops the ball and the opposition gains possession.

Metres gained is another- Take Lewis Jetta round 1, who had 16 touches. 44% efficiency according to the stats but had 472 metres gained. It’s nice to know I guess but doesn’t exactly tell you a full story of a players impact on a game.

One thing that is rock solid is goals. How a team shares that load is extremely important in the modern game. So I thought this year i might try and keep a leaderboard going on our goals kicked. I thought you all might like to discuss how this may look come round 23.

As of Round 2, here is the tally.
7. Darling
5. Lecras
4. Ryan
3. Venables
Waterman
2. Lycett
1. Hurn
Naitanui
Gaff
Duggan
Masten
Cripps
Yeo

JK to come back in, obviously that will change the order- but we’ve scored freely thus far this year- could this be the year JD hits 50-60 goals in the season proper?

Does he need to? Look how many avenues to goal we have now and that list doesn't even include don't touch Willie

Wow
No, he doesn’t need to- but I think it takes our forward line to another level if we’ve got JK with 60-70 & JD hitting 50 with Ryan/Rioli/Lecca/Cripps hitting 20-30.

Jack brings a lot of others into the game - it would be good to see him take his game to the next level as well.

We will become far more JK centric possibly to our detriment when he is back.

Once JK is back i wonder if Lecra and Cripps will see more midfield time? Lecra is in some form so if his body is back in shape i wouldn't mind seeing him play that HHF/Mid role he played in 2011 and 2015. I see Cripps is named on a wing again so he could easily stay there if needed. Waterman is the one i worry that will get the flick because we might end up top heavy with him JK, Darling and the resting ruck all in the forward line.

Halfway through the year- here’s what our goal tally looks like.
  1. Jack Darling (28)
  2. Josh Kennedy (27)
  3. Mark Lecras (21)
  4. Jamie Cripps (12)
  5. Jake Waterman (12)
  6. Willie Rioli (10)
  7. Liam Ryan (7)
  8. Andrew Gaff (7)
  9. Chris Masten (5)
  10. Nic Naitanui (5)
  11. Jack Redden (5)
  12. Scott Lycett (4)
  13. Daniel Venables (4)
  14. Dom Sheed (4)
  15. Elliot Yeo (3)
  16. Luke Shuey (3)
  17. Liam Duggan (2)
  18. Jack Petrucelle (2)
  19. Mark Hutchings (1)
  20. Shannon Hurn (1)
  21. Jeremy McGovern (1)

Side notes.

Fair proportion of the playing list has scored goals this year. 30 players have been used- 21 have hit the scoreboard. Big focus this year on sharing the load & it has shown in the results thus far.

JK is averaging more goals per game than any in the top 10. Still a massive chance of snaring a third Coleman- especially if we do get JD back before the end of the year.

Darling finds himself stranded on 299 goals, could have kicked the 300 last week but gave up his chance to kick that by handing it off to JK. Been probably the MVP this year in the league. In the goalkicking form of his life & it is such a shame he was injured this week.

Gaff has already surpassed his goal kicking tally from last year. Was a focus for him at the start of the year, and a big reason as to why he is now considered one of the elite players worth the $900k + contract. He’s a gun.

Rioli & Ryan & Waterman are on track to combine for 60 goals between them this year. We’ve always had a strong forward line, but to have players capable of kicking 20+ a year & provide strong defensive pressure is a key reason as to why we are the best side for efficiency i50 this year.

What are your thoughts on our goalkicking this year?

Cripps has 12, on track for 24. Are people happy with this?
nope. 35 is the bare minimum. That said he's been getting enough shots at goals. If he cleans it up, he would be in for a productive year.

Yeah Cripps is an interesting one, we win a GF and he'd be seen as an integral cog, don't really go anywhere and we'd be calling for his head.

All teams have them- they aren’t the sort of players that will take a game by the scruff of the neck and drag a team over the line, but they will provide handy little cameos which will inevitably be remembered fondly by supporters as the years roll on. Especially if we manage to win a flag in the next couple of years.

We talk often about how we cop the raw end in trade deals, but he has been one that has worked in our favour.
