No idea about Jeans giving instructions to O'Dea but he certainly told Brereton to come off the centre squrare at the ball up and clean up Stven Newport (Melbourne tagger) - Brereton has said as much. He definately had form.

Jeans, odea and Mathews clarkson
All should not have been allowed ANYWHERE near a footy ground
What a joke that was

This is a wonderful thread and brings back lots of memories
My top 10

Club sustenance program established during depression and susso building stands
Greening incident
Jack Hamiltons admin work at vfl
Lou Richards and his media presence

1990 flag first afl in history books

A few random entries not previously mentioned:
  • The retirement of Jock as coach
  • The appointment of Tom Hafey as the first non-magpie coach
  • The appointment of Lethal - another non-magpie
  • The invention and continued promotion of the Colliwobbles by LouR - I'm sorry but I could never respect him for that..

Remember 1958 GF very well - went with my father - queued for tickets on the day - great game - for years Barry Harrison had the number plate - BH 1958. In the week before the game The Herald? had a picture of Murray Weideman and his then lady companion-Marlene... (he was a ladies man) in a row boat on the Yarra - the caption was "drifting and dreaming".
Did well with Tuck (hamstring) and Kingston both out injured. (Think Kelly and Christian missing 1990).

One significant event was the 1963? election in which Sherrin defeated Jack Galbally. If Galbally had won might have set us on a different path - similar to the successful Hafey era at Richmond. When Hafey went to Richmond their President (Ray Dunn - defence lawyer ) said to Hafey "you coach I'll sort the admin".
Might Galbally have done something similar at Cwood? We'll never know.
PS - username TKiL has strong but not 100% connection to 1958 GF

1. 1892 Foundation of the club (Otherwise we wouldn't exist)
2. 1897 Move into the VFL (That's why we're not a club like Williamstown)
3. 1903 McHale arrives (involved in 9 Premierships, 8 as coach)
4. 1930 Fourpeat
5. 1958 Premiership and what it precipitated (Protected fourpeat, 32 years of the 'Colliwobbles')
6. 1990 Premiership (breaking of the 'Colliwobbles' drought - a proud club finds its mojo again)
7. 1999 McGuire arrives (Move from Vic Park, etc, etc)
8. 1976 Wooden Spoon and what followed (First wooden spoon for a proud club, a club at rock bottom, appointment of first coach outside of CFC (Hafey))
9. 1934 Phonse Kyne arrives (Involved in 4 Premierships, 2 as coach)
10. 2017 Foundation of the AFLW team (If you doubt this, project yourself 100 years into the future and look back)

Great list, but McHale and Wren were dead by 1958... they both checked out in October ‘53... just after we won the flag..

Actually the winning of the wooden spoon in 1976 was huge, We finally got our heads out of our behinds and stopped thinking we were too good for outsiders. Good Point!

Fantastic list.

A few things I didn't even consider.
Great work.

I think first 4 goals were pretty much daws
Re watch

Don't need to have a good memory.

He did a nice tap to Pendles who hit Cloke in the goal square. Free kick turnover.

Our first goal Sidebottom won a two on one on the wing who kicked long on his left to Dawes who was running TOWARDS goal who again tapped it to Cloke who hit Goldsack.

We lost very good players over the years because our board wouldn't pay them enough. Much of our lost opportunities over time have been much more self inflicted than they appear on face value. Board unrest and bitter elections have dogged the club. The Sherrin election divided the club. The Clarke election likewise. Poorly run or divided clubs do not win flags.
