Prediction The $2-million dollar player

With the desperate Saints offering Finn Callaghan $1.7m a year over 10 years, it could only be a matter of time before we see the first player offered a $2mil a year deal.

The question is: relative to the Callaghan offer, which players would actually command $2m a year on an open market? The requirements would be youth, A-grade talent and unique attributes most players don't have.

The two obvious names that come to mind are Nick Daicos and Sam Darcy.
Maybe Harley Reid? Melbourne wanted to offer 4 years worth of first rounders for him.
Sheezel? Ashcroft?
This never happened.

The $17m was made up by Finn's manager and "leaked" to the press to get his price up at GWS.
Player managers do this all the time.

Manager asks journo to write story or tweet. In return Manager promises.journo a good story at some time in the future and to maintain good contact.

They may have already been offered 2mil, but I dont think they have been.
Darcy should get offers like that, I dont think Daicos will just yet.

JHF, Darcy, Reid, etc are the types to get those offers, outside the Saints desperate attempts to get literally anybody to the club
Tom Scully GWS contract from 2012-17 was a 6 year deal.

2 million for year one then $800,000 a year for the last 5 seasons

I think youve gotta count it over the length of the contract, not front loaded or back loaded deals because otherwise west coast or richmond could have one next year tbh

You think west coast could give Harley Reid a similar deal like Tom Scully GWS deal in 2012-17?
I think a Warner deal would be front loaded like that, huge first year into 1.5mil+per year after
Reid I dunno how theyd do it, probably similar but may depend on if Warner is on the books or not

Sam Darcy hasn’t strung together two good games in a row. Might get a mention in the overrated thread in a couple of weeks
I know you Collingwood supporters are very insecure about other players taking Nick Daicos' spotlight, but player valuation is a little bit different to player output.

Darcy might not have achieved as much as Daicos, but on an open market, young A-grade athletic key forwards are regarded as particularly valuable assets.

Your club would trade all your draft picks + any player not named Nick Daicos for Sam Darcy in a heartbeat, regardless of where you personally rate him.

Weird comment… I didn’t mention anything about Nick Daicos? All the Nick Daicos threads on Bigfooty are full of Carlton supporters… I’m not sure why Carlton supporters are so obsessed with him?

In a few years with more inflation we will get a $2 million a year player. Wasn't so long ago that a $800,000 a year contract was seen as huge.
Salary cap was 17 million in 2024. It went up to 17.7 million in 2025.

Might rise to 18.5 million in 2026.

When Tassie comes in, salary cap will be 19 or 20 million
