The 2002 Draft

We have draft picks 26 - 42 - 58. I think we will only use 3 draft picks as it is meant to be a weak draft.

Any players you have seen that you would like West Coast to draft? Gilmour from South Freo seems to have some wraps on him, wonder if he will still be there at pick #26. He is a skillfull midfielder apparently.

With pick #26 we should pick up a youngster, should still get a decent player that late. After that we should only pick up 21-22yr olds (guys overlooked in previous yrs) who are capable of stepping up incase of injuries. Would make more sense than picking up an 18yr old who would need 2yrs development with no guarantee of ever getting a game.

In regards to drafting i think that the eagles should go after young players such as Cortney Johns (South Freo) and Matthew Pettigrew (West perth) two young tall players that could help fill a void in a couple of years for tall players (i dont see guys like embley having another inconsistent year hanging around)

Have personally seen these two guys play and think they could be handy for the eagles. Could also look into getting Nickowski(sp?) from subi to build up maybe as a small defender come midfielder.

Yeh welcome to the board Would Courtney Johns be any better than Travis Gaspar, Andrew McDougall or Quentin Lynch? He would be competing with these guys for a spot in the team.

Nicoski is apparently being looked at by Geelong and Brisbane. I was also talking to one of the seniors at Subi, and he reckons that Nicoski will go in the draft, but probably not staying in WA.

I'm not even sure if he has nominated yet.

I think that Johns if was drafted it would help out in a few years time not in the present. Because as the eagles get older they are going to obvisouly lose their talls, and i would think that a combination of Johns, Gaspar, Lynch and McDougall wouldn't be a bad spine for a future team.

On the Nicoski issue i heard that he was being looked at by geelong too through some links at SFC but if eagles could get him i really think it would be an added bonus in latter years

I'm good mates who is a good mate of Mark Nicoski, and I've bumped into Nicoski a few times. Apparently Geelong are very interested, I guess he would fit in well with their young team (he is born in 83).

He also got some tips from Lethal Leigh himself as well, because Brissie were interested, and the recruiting officer or someone passed on some msg's to him from Leigh Mathews that he thinks he should go in harder at the ball and things like that. He was pretty rapt apparently, considering that you're only a 18/19 yo kid, and you're getting tips from arguably the greatest person to be involved with football of all time.

Will be interesting to see if he gets picked up, or nominates himself.

I have also heard a lot about this Moody guy. Dunno if he is in the draft, but heard he is a strong tall attacker/defender. Wouldn't be ready next year but apparently will go high next year prob, so if we could gte him this year may be worth it in a weak draft?
