The 2010 Draft "Late Mail" thread.

Pelchen has already asked for time in advance.

Unfortunately, watching Pelchen have pow-wows with the Hawks staff is still more entertaining than the Fox Sports team. Red Button.

Hawthorn did not have a first round pick last year so they would have been absolute lightning!!! Unlike your memory.

Maybe that's why it was so quick. No pick because of Burgoyne?

That's because 30 minutes (?) prior to the draft starting they all gather in a secret room and do the first-round. This is so they can do the stupid reserve order crap for the TV to "build suspense".

Of course, but even the other 7 picks not made in the secret squirrel room earlier were done as quick as the first 10.

Vlad probably hadn't even finished his 'steadier'.:)

Have heard for some time that Port Adelaide are pretty happy with their ruck division and suspected for some time Lycett won't be the selection.

Where he slides to is anyones guess. Fremantle at 20, St Kilda at 24, Brisbane or West Coast after that might all take a look.

Every year mockdrafters/reports has Port picking up a ruckman in the first round.

Last year Nathan Vardy was a lock to go to Port, the year before it was Vickery. This year, it's Lycett.

Not sure why everyone assumes that considering Port has basically gone for best available in every draft in the first round.

After Brogan who is turning 32 next year it just isn't a great looking ruck division.

But with that said Port Adelaide are pretty satisfied with Lobbe from every source I've heard from for the past 3 months.

Will be very interesting who is taken at 16. Possibly a slider if someone of note happens to be available. Otherwise possibly Luke Parker might get looked at.

I think people would be surprised how much of the draft is already figured out. TV ratings/publicity are why they don't announce a lot of what is going on now.

There is a certain amount of good will that happens and I wouldn't be surprised if by now the top 15-20 are set in stone. It's funny how even one of the managers was pretty sure that Billie Smedts is going to Geelong at 15 and there is also rumours floating around that Brodie Smith is going to Adelaide at 14. They may just be rumours but I think there is a certain amount of good will that happens in the last week and it benefits all clubs.

For the later selections, yes, they will decide on the day but the first round is often done before the draft.

Barry Prendergast is the only person who knows who Melbourne will select. He may have told Dean Bailey, Tim Harrington and Cameron Schwab after they tortured him but I doubt it.

People say this a lot, but really our ruck division is pretty well suited to these new rule changes:

Main Ruck: Brogan/Lobbe
Forward Ruck: Stewart/Westhoff/Webb
Back Ruck: Trengove

Redden is also looking ready to play AFL and looks huge, Bass is still a while away but is also looking very promising.

We might take a Ruckman with one of our three other picks, but definately not our first.

Any chance Lycett may still be available at our second pick?

Most likely goes in the 20s with you passing. Very, very unlikely that he lasts, but with no teams really in great need of a ruckman, jump on him if he does for whatever reason manage to slide. Fantastic ruckman who at 16 represented very good value.

Looks like he's all yours at 17.

Not sure why you're opposed to it, I reckon he's a great talent.

North Melbourne already have a very strong ruck division and really don't need him. McIntosh and Goldstein is more than sufficient, could possibly add a late/rookie ruckman, but they need outside speed + skill. Lycett will drop to the 20s.

North will most likley take one of: I.Smith, Smedts, Harper, Pitt and Lamb.

It's not a comment on Lycett. He's taken the view that with McIntosh and Goldstein in the team North have more pressing needs than a ruckman with their first pick, which is fair enough.

I would've thought North's first pick would be the best available outside mid who's quick and has good skills. They have a fleet of inside mids just need some quality run and carry to compliment that.

McIntosh and Goldstein do the job in the ruck. They can add another ruck to their list with a later pick.

I'm not going to dispute the above, but like the other poster said, the clubs usually know who everybody else is taking (at least early on).

But Harvey said, unlike previous years, Fremantle hadn’t been able to confirm the selections of other clubs before flying to Victoria.

“There’s a bit of conjecture as in what Melbourne may be doing at the moment,” Harvey said.

“I don’t think they’ve gone cold on Watts. I just think the Naitanui factor has been growing on them. That’s not a direct conversation I’ve had with Melbourne, but that’s what we hear at the moment.

“Normally three days out from the draft, everyone knows the top-10 picks but that’s not the case in this particular draft.”

Sorry the proper link I had to the article in the West seems dead, but hey ...

My answer is basically summarised in the following three posts.

About to make a request to Vossy and the Lions recruting staff re: Jack Darling. How much do i need to bribe Voss and his crew to go with Lucas Cook or another tall instead... Forward line with Fevola, Brown and Darling wouldnt just be scary on the field :D seriously but Darling at 26 would be a dream pick.

Cant see him getting past Freo's pick 20 but especially if Conca's gone = highly likely. There order of preference probably is 1. Conca, 2. Darling, 3. Cripps. Pick 20 could shape Freo over the next few years. Choice maybe between 2 needed depth positions for Freo. Forward Darling vs. Ruckman Lycett.

Pick 26 for West Coast (pending Darling) could get interesting for West oast if Lycett Slides. We must pounce on him if his there. Even if Mitchell, Hamp/ other tall forwards are available, the 3rd ruck spot is a pressing need and Mitchell, Hamp, Steinberg, Barden etc majority of those tall forward WILL be available at 29

Other pick 29 options. Kirk Ugle is firming, but dont rule out Rhys Cooyou here. If not them i'd be content with Cripps (unlinkely but), Newton, Andreoli or Fasolo out of the smalls. Litherland or Chalwell if a tall

Hadley is the Lions head of recruitment and being based in WA would be all over the Darling issues. The would love us to take him but I worry about Darling and Fevola teaming up off the field :)
