The 2010 Draft "Late Mail" thread.

Barry Prendergast is the only person who knows who Melbourne will select. He may have told Dean Bailey, Tim Harrington and Cameron Schwab after they tortured him but I doubt it.

I don't doubt that there is a certain level of secrecy but what advantage would Melbourne possibly gain by saying who they are going to take at 12 rather than another player? By the time Melbourne get to pick again at 33, the players available and landscape will be dramatically different.

I am a firm believer that a fair portion of the first round is known before the draft and I don't believe this year will be any different. It allows clubs to be prepared for the inevitable spiel about a player and all the information that goes on after that, it allows them to make the decisions in privacy and lets them have a reasonable think rather than the two minutes. It doesn't happen for the whole draft as I believe this only happens in the last 2-3 days so by the time a few have had their choices and considered them, the whole thing is upon them.

I don't believe a lot of the players or a lot of the media necessarily know but I'm sure the clubs have a fair idea within the first round. I don't think it extends much beyond there but I believe there is more "professional courtesy" amongst recruiters than people are led to believe and it extends to for you information, we intend to select x rather than y.

I agree with you that recruiters have a very good idea of the order early in the draft. I'm just pointing out that BP is very secretive. He has absolutely every reason to be at pick 12 this year - GC has 3 picks immediately before and 1 pick immediately after - if they're considering 4 players with those picks they want to make sure they pick the one Melbourne is most interested in the first 3.

Any word for Port GR?

If a notable slider falls (Atley/Smedts/Pitt they might be the pick). But some of the popular names at the moment being talking about include: Parker, B.Smith and I.Smith.

Still remains unclear exactly who the target is, but most likely to be one of these.

From Twitter @RalphyHeraldSun

Richmond puts up story about drafting Reece Conca on their website then withdraws it. Oops. 6 hours too early. At least they are prepared.

Had a read of this one earlier today. They sound pretty confident WCE won't take Conca at 4. :D

Was a good 12 hours too early when I saw it this morning.

May have already been posted but heard Collingwood flew Rhys Cooyou to Melb for a training session within the last week.
Late pick for the Pies??

Have heard he might be a consideration for the Pies along with Kirk Ugle late.

Have also heard WCE might take one of the two at 29 which could be interesting.

they still do the draft the old fashioned way, picking 1-10, they just do it behind closed doors and then announce it reverse order

The reverse order is just a bunch of sepo made-for-television bulls**t Andrew Demitriou has introduced. How the f**k is reversing the order adding suspense to the broadcast? In addition to this, only the first round is being shown live. No way would the NFL or NBA show only 1 round and then be done with it. Oh that's right, The Back Page or Inside Rugby is what the viewers want.

Well done to those in charge of scheduling at FOX :thumbsu:

yeah it's ridiculously stupid.

I'm not sure how it works tonight though... I mean, I know the red button is getting the picks, but as I understand it, they still do it behind closed doors? I mean, are Fox allowed in?

Find out soon I spose

In my opinion there is more suspense in the back half of the first round because you aren't sure who is going to be picked. Every year there is a slider, and someone that gets taken who wasnt expected to be picked until later.

I mean the first 6 or 8 picks are pretty much set in stone anyway...

Which is exactly the point of the reverse order being bull shite.
You have got to wonder where the AFL & Fox come up with these ideas ???

Just goes to confirm that some of these decision makers are space cadets, honestly doing it once and failing is one thing but to then go and do it again is just crazy.

So true. Really I can only think the clubs and Dementedwho just aren't prepared to LIVE announce, or more likely, the clubs don't want to scramble if a player is taken just prior to their slot - yet they do for picks 11+!

The 'on the clock' type scenario makes for great draft watching, throw in a gallery of mad fans, with player highlight reels+stats from the broadcaster and you got yourselves a guaranteed 'must watch'.
