Tapered doesnt mean fell off a cliff.
I would more say stagnated than anything. Last year you couldnt expect much of him due to lack of preseason. But im feeling he could be in for a big one. Jk would get more attention this year so darling, leccas and gov (if he goes forward) will have to step up a bit

How arguable is it that we have 3 x of the top 5?

Darling, Gaff and McGovern?
More arguable to say top 10. I don't think non-wce supporters rate Darling nearly as highly as we do

Lycett has the potential to be a premier ruckmen of the comp as well and thats scary.
Time is running out for this "potential" Cox won a flag and was already an All Australian at the same age Lycett is this season.

They will after he wins the Coleman this season.

Yeah... I dunno about that kid, he really has only played a handful of good games when you boil it down. Of course KP player, young etc... needs a big year to justify the hype.

Top 10 is a shoe in. You are right on Darling all though I think he will remind them this year!

Most people (Victorians) who barely watched this team play in 2015 thought his stock dropped just on his grand final performance alone. They don't realise that he'd missed last pre season & the first 10 games of 2015.

His lacklustre finals performance is the perfect example of why it is so important for players to get through a pre season unscathed.

I'm expecting JD to bounce back strong in 2016 :thumbsu:

Lycett is only 23. Cox started hitting his straps at 23 then made AA at 24 and a flag at 25. Lycett wont do this because he isn't our main ruckman.

Cox had Ben Cousins, Chris Judd and Daniel Kerr, all in their primes, roving his taps, and didn't have some big-leaping Fijian kid taking away his ruck time.

He started as understudy to Gardiner though (up to and during that 2006 premiership year). NN started as understudy to Cox. ? started as understudy to NN. That question mark isn't Lycett, h's more like our current Seaby - destined to only ever be a backup ruck. We'll draft NN's eventual replacement in 2-3 years.

Cox was an understudy till half way through 2004 not 2006.

Yes, sorry, I didn't word that last post at all well. Gardiner going from AA in 2003 to nothing in '04 onwards was such a waste. My (failed) attempted point was we've had a line of AA rucks for a while now and Lycett isn't in that line. But when fit he's a solid backup. I'm predicting NN will be even better this year and keep improving for the next 2-3 years. Just hope we have the midfielders to leverage his potential dominance best.

Would be interesting if Giles showed a bit and we could trade lycett for a player or pick. Strong draft coming up I think?

Cox would burn Lycett in almost every attribute at the same age. That's nothing to be ashamed of tho, Cox is the king of all ruckman.

Despite all the injuries, when GAJ was out it was Swallow that was the player trying to lift the team. If we'd had pick one he'd have been an absolute star for us.

we are not the spud shed. Giles was only brought in top be a back if the worst case happened.

Lycett still has the potential to be a premier ruckmen (not cox level) but one of the best in the comp. Lycett can go forward and snag a few but unlike a sinclair and even a seaby, lycett is a number ruckmen and you can rely him to step up when nic nats down. I was super impressed with lycett v hawks last year, especially when he was under done.

Yet Gaff has achieved more at this stage. Gaff got serious flack in 2013 and 14 but he was averaging like 20 disposals (above average for a wingmen) and 24 disposals in 14 ( which is actually pretty good). His inside 50's werent great but thats was because we sucked on the inside then. Gaff has been a pretty good player for us since day one and has struggled with the tags at times but he is currently one of the most valuable players in the side for us and in hindsight its good we got him at 4.

What would be negative about Giles proving he is a capable 2nd/back up ruckman ? That is all the bloke is suggesting, which would then give us the opportunity to access the Lycett situation and draft a new young ruckman.

true but giles is 28 and has been pretty inconsitent for a while now. Lycetts had his fair share of injuries but has shown him more than capable for us. Plus lycett is just about to enter his prime. We need those sorts of players right now.

Wow, gutted by that. The bloke was finally showing some of his massive potential...hopefully means we can get him cheap!
O'Meara looks to be struggling too.

As good a wingman as Gaff is, it's tough to put him above those that play in the middle. If you want to say that Gaff has produced more, sure. I don't think Gaff will ever be top 5 in the comp, but Bennell or Swallow still have the potential to be.
Dyson Heppell* should probably be in the conversation too.

Bennell yes but too patchy and swallow still has a long way to go. Gaff is a very underrated by many footy fans. easily the fittest guys going around at the moment and he hurts the opposition more than heppell. His already showed that he can win his footy and that aspect of his game will develop more in the coming years. After 2012 Clubs identified that Gaff is key to stopping us as he would hurt the opposition and hence they put a hard tag on him. Last year he broke free of the tag and hence he became an AA and one of the best mids in the comp. If gaff was based over east, he would be pumped up heaps as he is not only a tireless worker but deadly with ball in hand.
