In a draft not compromised by Gold Coast picks I'd still have preferred David Swallow with our pick 1. Unlucky with injury in particular of late and was more of a ready made player than Gaff was when drafted.

Think 2010 will go down in club history as one of our great drafts. Gaff V Polec was the debate at the time and right now you'd take Gaff any day, there's a chance Polec might have been traded back to SA by now if we went with him anyway. Gaff always had the running power, kick and talent just needed to fill out more which has done now, there was the Darling slide and than getting the best rated ruck in Lycett to develop for post Dean Cox.

Ending up with Cripps as well via St. Kilda is just an added bonus from the draft

Don't forget one Jeremy McGovern in the rookie draft too.

Lycett could well turn out to the best tall from the draft. The ones drafted ahead of him have turned out to be fairly pedestrian - Day, Gorringe, Cook (lol Melbourne, thanks for passing up on Darling for this spud), Matthew Watson...

I agree I would have taken Swallow as well - he seems like he would fit the West Coast culture perfectly. Didn't Gold Coast sack their whole fitness and conditioning team last year? They seem to have had a lot of (and recurring) injuries to their mids and I know the Freo conditioning team were pretty unimpressed with the condition that Bennell (from a football pov) came to them and have spent a lot of time reprogramming (or whatever they call it) his body to last the long term.

I feel like this discussion has come at the wrong time.

I know Darling has been great thus far into his career but i havent forgotten his last senior game. Doesn't sit well with me even now after 4 months.

Lycett we all know is a very capable ruckman but again he didn't have the best of seasons. He will need to establish himself this season as he is hitting that age where ruckman begin to strut their stuff.

Gaff has been great as has McGovern.

dont forget about darlings last 7-6 senior games. He ran out off puff a month or 2 after his return. he had no preseason and his lack of fitness showed and hence his confidence going into the granny would have been pretty low. he booted 5 goals in his last 5 games.

I've noticed more of him dropping chest marks with all the Fox replays and classic games. Needs to stick his hands out more often.

Yeah his marking has gotten worse over time. Spends too much time trying to milk frees for high contact

Bennell yes but too patchy and swallow still has a long way to go. Gaff is a very underrated by many footy fans. easily the fittest guys going around at the moment and he hurts the opposition more than heppell. His already showed that he can win his footy and that aspect of his game will develop more in the coming years. After 2012 Clubs identified that Gaff is key to stopping us as he would hurt the opposition and hence they put a hard tag on him. Last year he broke free of the tag and hence he became an AA and one of the best mids in the comp. If gaff was based over east, he would be pumped up heaps as he is not only a tireless worker but deadly with ball in hand.

I don't believe he's that underrated. He's definitely in the mix for the best wingman in the comp, I just don't see him ever being a top 5-10 player in the competition. Yes, Bennell is patchy, but if it comes together there's not comparison between the two. Hence, if you had pick 1 in 2010 , would you pick Gaff 1?

well if this draft was held today, gaff would go higher. Only a parker and maybe a heppell would go higher

"But if it comes together."

That's a big if.

Gaff has already come together. The only one that would tempt me over Gaff is Luke Parker.

Not saying he's crap, but to date he hasn't been better than Darling.
Thats true but his last two seasons have been a lot better than darlings and him being a true key position probably means his more valued.

whens swallows contract expiring? If we lose masto then swallow would be a good pick up.

Would be a massive win getting Swallow in for the loss of Masten. Without being certain I'm going to assume he is happy and settled on the GC but and with younger indigenous boys from WA there now in Jarrod Garlett and Cal Ah Chee him being around the Suns for their on and off field development is important.

well you never know. His had a torrid 18 months with injuries and is ste to miss the first half of the year again. If someone from the eagles can get in his ear and convince him that he needs a fresh start, then he might be willing to move. He just started living up to expectations in 2014 and since then his had some injuries.

I said if. The bloke is a free agent at the end of the year and anything can happen.
