I guess the real question is how this will impact on spending going forward. Will Chelsea, Real, PSG and City be in a position to continue to spend 80M pounds+ per annum on transfers and crazy amounts on wages or will they need to reign this in?

If such clubs are able to continue to spend crazy money beyond their self generating means then there is absolutely no point in UEFA monitoring spending at all.

Just curious about how you exactly reject a resignation? I'm assuming their hoping for some kind of payout if he does go to Villa?

from what i read he offered to quit while negotiations with villa were ongoing, so then he could leave and not have to be compensated for. it was rejected so until villa sign him and compensate him, he's still norwich's manager.

at least that's what i presume it means.

For City I dont think there is any intention to continue spending at the levels of the last few years.

I think wages will drop as we lose fringe squad players and we are getting close to the stage where we won't have to pay a premium to attract top quality players.

Most important though, our income is rising all the time. From £80m a few years back to probably over £200m in the next set of accounts.

Champions league revenue is expected to double in two years time and I'd be surprised if we werent earning £400m a year in five years time.

Also FFP is probably the main reason we have spent so much, so soon. Get the spending out the way before FFP comes into play.

The real losers of FFP will IMO be the likes of Everton, Villa, Newcastle who will find it difficult now to break into the upper echelon.

others losers will include the clubs like malaga, who are trying desperately to break the monotonous monopoly that madrid/barca have on la liga. the only way is to spend big, especially with the ludicrous television deals there. the television deals alone could cover a ronaldo like signing every season for those two clubs, so malaga will have to find a way to fit in with ffp while the rich get richer.

still think ffp will be gone 5-7 years after it's introduced. can you imagine trying to keep a club out of the champions league? lawyers bankrolled by a sheikh or roman? good luck fighting that.

Ummm I'm pretty sure you are invited to play in the CL, UEFA can leave out who they like...

Not if your reasons for leaving out a team are in breach of European law.

Wont come down to that anyway. TV companies, sponsors etc won't stand for high profile teams being removed from competition, and the whole standing of the competition would suffer if the best teams and best players arent playing in it.

Exactly right, its a symbiotic relationship because UEFA are still trying to raise the profile of game in other markets such as the US and Asia. Imagine if internationally renowned teams such as Barcelona and Man Utd (no disrespect to Man City but they have less of a presence internationally in Asia+US) were denied the right to play off in the Champions League, they'd immediately lose massive viewership both now and in future seasons.

In any case, I'm sure Roman and his friends will find a way around it and exploit a loophole, similar to Judd's Visy deal but on a much larger scale.

UEFA aren't serious about controlling the exorbitant transfer fees and wages!

They are the mongrels who are driving these unsustainable transfer fees and wages by making the Champions League into something that it should not be, that is, a League that runs in competition with other domestic leagues and thereby grossly inflating the prices being paid for players.

Champions League is going to be a bigger problem soon.

There is talk that TV money given to competing clubs will be doubled in the next few years, which is going to make it close to impossible for the rest to compete.

Personally I think the competition should be all about prestige, not money. So a significant portion should be divided amongst all teams.

Maybe then we'll see an end to the farce where 4th spot is seen as more important than winning things.

Just seen that Pavel Pogrebnyak was released by Fulham

WHY?!

I can only think out of contract and not prepared to sign another. Danny Guthrie has been released by Newcastle the same way.

Not too sure how much attention people pay to the lower leagues here. But Shrewsbury in league 2 have a couple of solid right mids in the same mold as the Ox that could potentially be squad players at higher clubs - Lionel Ainsworth and Jon Taylor. Anyone heard much about these guys?
