Champions League is going to be a bigger problem soon.

There is talk that TV money given to competing clubs will be doubled in the next few years, which is going to make it close to impossible for the rest to compete.

Personally I think the competition should be all about prestige, not money. So a significant portion should be divided amongst all teams.

Maybe then we'll see an end to the farce where 4th spot is seen as more important than winning things.

Spot on Moomba - 100%.

It should be about prestige and it should only be for Champions of the various leagues: just as the name implies and not, as you rightly say, for the 4th placed teams or for 3rd and 2nd as well.

It is crippling mid/small clubs all over Europe.

I checked out the England/Belgium game in the wee small hours this morning and I'll tell you what; if that Hazard young 'un is worth 35 million pounds, then something is very badly wrong with football today.

He seems to be a good young player but 35 million? what a **** ing joke.

had you seen him play previously to this morning?

Yeah I have and don't get me wrong, he has lots of potential and is a good player but my opinion of him was strengthened even more so by watching him this morning.

I just think that the physical nature of the EPL will finding him out at present and I don't reckon he's worth 35 mill.

It's a lot of doe to spend to find out if he can mix it with the pro's in the EPL but whilst there are emperors like Abramovich around, that's the kind of madness we are going to continue to see.

Milan's newest signing

On a serious note, Adriano Galliani is currently in Barcelona which is spurring the Thiago Silva > Barcelona rumours. However, the story from Milan is that they are interested in Thiago Alcantara.

He's one for the future.

How many times have we heard this before? What about Silva? Robben? Mata? Modric? Van der Vaart? A younger Joe Cole? Scholes? All these guys are about his size and have done just right with that physical nature of the EPL.

The reason he's not worth 35 mil (+ his wages) is that he won't earn Chelsea that money back via merchandising or other forms of income. Or maybe they believe that his presence will make Chelsea more popular and successful in the next 5 seasons, but that's hard to calculate coz this involves many players. I can only guess that the price went this high because City and Utd were also willing to pay this much.

As for Hazard against England, I thought he played well. England were defending in numbers and Belgium were playing without a striker for most of the game, so conditions weren't easy for him. We sort of outplayed them in midfield really and Hazard was a big part of that, it's just that we didn't have anyone up front to pass the ball to, other than Fellaini who had to come run from too deep.

NOOO!! :(

Knew it was always going to happen but now we lose a ton of compo cause it wasn't an English club.

Slimy little bastard, how about some loyalty to the club whos youth system you came through?

I think most players would struggle to stay loyal to any club under Venkys.

That's not to say I don't want to see you guys back soon, you just better hope Kean grows a managerial brain cell or two lest he leave you in the shit when he inevitably gets fired.

Kean out, Dalglish in?

Can't blame the kid for leaving, but he should've stayed in England for the sake of the club's finances. From memory we lose about 3.2 million in compensation.

Given the basketcase we are, few other players also likely to be leaving soon. Yakubu, Olsson, N'Zonzi, Formica, Robinson and Dann all linked with moves away, a couple of decent picks there.

Pederson is staying though, probably one of our best atm.

You are right about people having doubts about some players, because of their stature, not making it in the physical EPL and a lot of players have proved them wrong.

Yes also to the fact he did play OK against England but for me, the other players you mentioned, showed very early on that they were able to use their "behinds", for lack of better word, to be able to take impacts from others. Young Hazard seems to me rely heavily on not making body contact at present but as I said, I hope he gets good at that aspect of the game because his first touch and control is excellent.

Kagawa is a great signing for Utd. He's young and provides much needed creativity through the middle, I think the only area of this Utd side that really required improvement. It'll free up Rooney so he doesn't need to keep dropping deep to provide that spark and I think you could see more goals from him next season as he can now play closer to goal. Also means there's now a long-term replacement for Scholes so there isn't so much pressure on him to be up and about every week.

Still baffled as to how he got himself a new deal

He was hugely influential for them in the 2nd half of this season, showing he really shouldn't have retired so early to begin with! If they can set up a Giggs style situation where he's not having to play 40 games a season but can provide Fergie with a quality, trusted option off the bench then he will be fulfilling his role. He's also there in a coaching capacity aswell.
