Don't buy this. Both Ramirez's agent and the Bologna chief confirmed Liverpool had made a bid of €20m for him, but that it had gone on hold while we changed managers and they waited for potentially bigger offers. Whether we get him or not is another question entirely, but you don't make a bid like that if you apparently don't have the money to spend. I dont think any of us know for sure how much FSG are going to be investing in this transfer window beyond speculation originating in tabloid articles.

The last window when we supposedly used up all their money only ended up being approximately a £30m outlay for them as player sales covered the majority of it, so it's not like they've put an enormous investment into the club beyond the initial purchase. I don't know how much is in the transfer kitty, but Werner & Henry have talked the talk and said on many occasions they have the £££ to compete with anyone, let's see if they walk the walk this summer. It's absolutely pivotal for the future of the club that they do because while we're down now, there's no way in a million years anyone associated with Liverpool will accept that as the norm with the resources at their disposal. If they were happy with it then they wouldn't have sacked half the coaching staff. People talk about being delusional, it's not delusion, it's ambition and we're not going to get back to the top with this pathetic "accept we're a mid-table club" attitude some people are peddling. City were in the Championship 10 years ago & look where ambition has got them.

If anything, for me it would be poor business sense not to invest in this window to jump start the club & give us that last little push into the top 4. If they don't, it's risking another season without Champions League football and the revenue that comes with it both in TV rights & more commercial investment in the club which I'm sure is not what FSG want.

good post...and yeah I agree that it would be crazy for Liverpool to scale back transfers base on 1 poor year. The club is one of the richest in the world and they need to trust in their new manager to make the right deals this off season. Clubs like City have elite talent sitting on the bench where we need elite talent to start...its a no brainer for me that we need to get a couple of big signings.

I just have a feeling they are going to be conservative in transfers this off season...but would be very happy for that to be proven wrong

Moneyball wasn't about going for cheap signings, it was about working out which were the most important & underrated skills in baseball/football and to buy the players that fit that criteria. They obviously decided that 'Chances created was a very important stat and so they went and bought Downing, Adam & Henderson who were all in the top 10 for 'chances created' in the 10/11 season. This obviously hasn't been the right way of going about it as patently there's more to success than this, it was an interesting idea but also a massive gamble which unfortunately didn't pay off as we didn't have a clinical striker to finish off these chances. I expect this area to be the most important signing we make this summer.

Saints have officially signed Jay Rodriguez from Burnley for an undisclosed fee believed to between £6m and £7m.

The reaction on Twitter seems to be that we overpaid but bearing in mind the premium placed on English players it seems about right. He's a 22 year old England U/21 International who scored 21 goals last season.

We'll need another keeper, a couple of central defenders, some wide players and a box-to-box midfielder to be competitive so nothing much really. ;)

It's great to be back in the Premier League

Only question for me is who makes way?

Modric or Kagawa and one other in the centre of midfield is weak. So do you play three in the centre of midfield and sacrifice a forward, or do you play either on the wing (not much of an upgrade).

Or just go with the two in the centre of midfield and look to just outscore the opposition.
I reckon a 4-2-3-1 set up with Kagawa behind Rooney, Nani and Valencia on the wings with Modric operating with freedom in the middle and a Carrick or Fletcher sitting in front of the back four. That set up allows for variability dependent on the situation and provides a great deal of potency. That's if Modric signs of course.

That is a solid looking XI! With Leighton Baines looking like coming in too there really wouldnt be many weaknesses in that Utd squad once Vidic comes back.

Need someone other than Fletch or Carrick to be the water carrier IMO, other than that, looks pretty good

Yet another rumour...but is reported in a number of sources. can only hope

Now this I like...imagine if liverpool could land him a Johnson? I would be very hapy
Caught offside is probably the worst site in the history of websites.

Lots of talk surrounding Robert Lewandowski and a possible move to Manchester United, he refused to anwers questions regarding the matter but i did hear the the Poland coach has said he is good enough for United or something like that, still al rumours. He scored 22 goals last season and is only 23, looks like a genuine goal-scorer but if he comes, what will it mean for Welbeck and Hernandez?

Also, any more news regarding Modric? The Sun has been reporting that he will sign a 4-year deal with Man Utd after the EURO's but they are not a reliable source.

Would be very happy if our summer signing's were Modric, Kagawa, Lewandowski and Baines.

i think what united is really lacking is a dmf. lassana diarra is available and some others,

i'll be frank, i dont think fletcher and carrick can cut the mustard for the squad. honestly speaking id like to see the likes of evans, and these two to not be playing at the same time.

a dmf is essential as well as another cb seeing vidic is coming back from injury and ferdinand isnt getting any younger. evans is a hack simple. he will never carry the backline to success with his short temper and idiotic decision making.

Carrick was outstanding last season, so he deserves his spot, Fletcher however, he was ill, but i don't think he is up to it, and if we are signing Modric along with Kagawa, he'll have to settle for being a bench/impact player.

Evans was great also last season, was a hack in the 2010/11 season but i thought he did a great job covering Vidic, will still improve and SAF will not sell him but i do agree that we need another CB. Vidic is 30/31? and is coming back from a serious knee injury, so he may not be the same and Ferdinand is 33 and isn't himself anymore.

Sturridge and Johnson would be two pretty good transfers. Caught Offside however is the worst website for football rumours.

Oh c'mon. You paid what for Downing? It's only about 5 million more! haha.
I love how you always say random shit? Always bringing it back to Liverpool.

Off you go, go find where I said Downing was a great buy for 20 million. I was never happy with buying Downing, I was appalled by how much we spent. So having got that out of the way.

That's a lot of money for Lavezzi.
