don't mean to be rude but i've heard Roos say emphatically "draft best available, trade for needs" in fact he was going on about why a lot of clubs have got it wrong.

I agree though they'll work out for you, maybe that was just a lucky part of it

Haha funny stuff if true. I just saw an old ep of on the couch from his sydney days where he talked about drafting for needs. Crafty bastard that he is.

Really happy with the lions picks. Aish was a steal but with the others i think we nailed on what position players we needed. top stuff.

On Aish going back home, can't see him doing it. Looks a classy responsible bloke, lets hope he is

You don't know Aish's pedigree. His uncle is an SANFL legend and resisted the VFL and AFL because us family was more important. We might as well start the negotiations for ha return.

I think we did well in the fact we got what we needed. Wonder if we are going to go hard for draft picks in next year's trade period considering the calibre of players on offer

Cats will only rate 6/10 o this draft today.

The way Wells goes about it, that value will not increase until 2016 where everyone will sit there in Cats games with people throwing things at the TV as Geelong debuts their 2013 draft picks who grab 20 touches and look completely at home...

Go Catters

The only good part of the draft for Adelaide was seeing both Scharenberg and Aish selected before what our first pick would have been without sanctions. Downhill from there.

Went in needing pace and foot skills first and foremost, a project ruckman as next on the list, and walked away with another two inside midfielders, already the strongest part of our list. Trading in Vince for Crouch has a real stink about it, people wouldn't be raving and cheering half as much if he had a different surname.

Our "inside" poster reported the Crows recruiters were incredulous that Crouch was going to fall to us - one wonders at what point they should have realised that everyone else passing him over for the first 22 picks, even by clubs who need inside grunt, might be an indicator they've missed something.

Brisbane - Wow.

Melbourne - Could have had Josh Kelly.

Obvious we didnt rate him as a standout. And also that we're looking for instant inside mids. Too many babies on our list already.

Pretty happy with the Pies draft. Sharenburg fits both a current need in the backline and by all reports is a great talent. Freeman should assist in our slightly one-paced midfield, especially after Swan retires.

Intrigued with what Marsh could turn into.

Brissie and Saints did very well. Hawks could have either done very well or very poorly depending on how Garlett reacts to being on an AFL list.

Brisbane recruiters would be very happy, pies done pretty good I liked that they took Marsh with the late pick

I bet Lewis Taylor will go on to become a jet. These little nuggety dudes who should be top 10 slip in every single draft every single year and they go on to become stars. Good pick for Lions at 28.

Like who? I think you are overestimating the number of good short people running around as midfielders.

The only good small midfielder that I can think of that was a bargain in recent times is Christensen. Go back a bit further to Stokes. Some others like Neale can play a role, but they are nowhere near stars. Prestia and Smith were fairly high picks.

Most good sides won't play with more than say 2-3 players under 180cm, and they are often small forwards or exceptional short people who are very rare (e.g. Boomer, Mitchell, Jack). There might be one gun dwarf mid come along maybe once every 5-6 years. Not saying Taylor isn't a good pick for Brisbane, but makes sense that the other sides didn't use a pick on him.

Frem - Apeness, A. Pearce, B. Grey (4/10) smokeys everywhere

I'll offer up some more thoughts later, but just on this...

They may have been considered 'smokeys' for BigFooty standards, but not if you talk to recruiters. Apeness was a consensus top 25 pick, and probably the only KPF (outside of Boyd) who could legitimately see playing time next year. And since the Combine, most of the talk was about Pearce going early based on his upside. Grey was a surprise (a nice one) but we already had our project tall. We didn't need another in Marsh.

Maybe not the flashiest draft, but filled our needs and took players where they were rated.

Otherwise, love that one of my personal favourites went in the top 30 - Sean Lemmens. With George Hewett and Orazio Fantasia not too far behind. All in all, I think Brisbane, St Kilda, Port Adelaide and West Coast did well on first looks (by which I mean, they took the BigFooty 'names').

Chris, what could be the reason Dwayne Wilson not selected? Super talent. So many SA boys left on the shelf -

Interstate recruiters can't judge talent is the most likely reason. :p

Probably just a combination of inconsistency, only 50-60 players getting taken and there not being a real run on small forwards/midfielders. Should get rookied.

Aish will stay at Brissie and become an outstanding player/captain. Brisbane were huge winners in the draft.
The team with lots of top 30 picks will always look like winners the morning after, but it will be the same as every year, some of those kids will be stars, some will be mid level guys who never kick on to their potential, some crueled by injury and some outright duds. Development is far more important than picks, I remember when we had 5 top 20 picks and from that draft only Deledio remains, yet now if we had the same we could do so much better.

I'd be tipping Collingwood with their good development get more from their two top 10s than Brisbane or the Saints do with their picks because the Pies will develop them right.

Nice drafting by Freo :D Pearce surprised me more than Grey, who I felt was a pretty strong chance, but I didn't really know how to rate him all year. Pearce is all potential at this stage, whereas Grey already has a pretty strong game. Hard to see where Grey's deficiencies are really besides his disposal which is alright, but can be a mixed bag.

however not sure about recruiting brothers at the same club. Look how it can end - Chad Cornes got virtually thrown out of Port, and I imagine it would've caused some friction between the coaches and Kane.

 Seriously? There would not be a single Port Fan in the world who would advise against having the Cornes brothers at their club. Two club champions... You picked a horrible example to illustrate your point.

We've played a truckload of finals in the last decade. Don't think we are too bad at developing players.
