Think the clubs that did very well were the Saints and North.

Saints gained three super midfield talents, justifying their offseason trading in my eyes.
North did fantastic to snag Dumont, refraining from the desire to go needs and get a small forward. Only issue is now they may have too many good mids (although you can never have enough midfielders).
Lions, I think won the night by doing the best with what they had. Aish will be a star and Taylor was the biggest slider imo. Filled defensive spots with some top talent; along with the biggest LOL moment when they chose McStay. Lets hope he does for their sake.

GWS notably did well for obvious reasons but I'm convinced they only picked McCarthy at 14 to troll the rest of the comp, safeguarding all the KPFs to ensure they get offered first round picks for a few years as they sell them off to the highest bidders. Sucks for the kids though. Trade period in next few years will be interesting, thats for sure.

Other clubs I thought did well (all clubs will be happy with their picks - noone would admit to not having a great night):

Carlton - Got Cripps as expected, who we really rate; Giles is a huge get as the best KPD in the draft. 39 is a big win. Holman at 51 is great drafting, too.
Pies - Scharenberg over Aish is a huge call, but Scharenberg will be a great player so was a low risk pick. Freeman great, too but overrated at that position - time will tell. Marsh maybe should've been rookied but they'll be happy with him that late. Not sure about Pies 'winning' the draft, but they did well as anyone would with picks 6 + 10.
Sydney - Did very well to get Jones and the young Hewett with their first two. Nankervis another who I think will be a player - one of the highest SC averages in the draft... look forward to his debut (perhaps in early 2014). Aliir Aliir is a great story, too - well done Swans.
West Coast - Got Sheed at #11, justifying their trade strategy. Also pulled in a few more WA boys and the highly rated Karpany - well done Coasters.
Crows - Crouch at 23 is about right and will thrive next to his big bro. Knight is a great get at #48, too.

Clubs that perhaps didn't do as well on the surface via confusing picks:

Freo - McCarthy being taken at 14 would've pissed them off to no end, but Apeness is a solid backup. Pearce is rated by many and two big talls with their first two picks is a big call. Time will tell.
Suns - Kolo was the right call, but surprised his brother wasn't drafted as many thought. Leslie was a headscratcher given Lobb was there; also - Lemmens was a big bolter, though they obviously liked him so who are we to say they didn't get who they wanted.

Verdict is out for:

Dogs - big risk on Bontempelli. If their dream for him to become Pendles-MKII comes to fruition, his #4 tag will be worth it. If not, they'll spend years wondering why they didn't just take Scharenberg or Aish.
Tigers - Lennon will be a great player at AFL level, but 2 x mature players in Gordon and Lloyd were interesting. Preparing for their premiership window perhaps?
Port - Impey, Harvey and DBJ. Not bad but I just get excited for them - Port fans may be a bit more optimistic however.
Dons - Got who they wanted at 26 in younger Merrett, Zak plus Fantasia... might go for a ruck in the rookie draft.

Anyone want to add/argue?

I feel like doing a post-mortem for a draft that happened last night is a bit silly. Drafts take years to judge.

They may have been considered 'smokeys' for BigFooty standards, but not if you talk to recruiters. Apeness was a consensus top 25 pick, and probably the only KPF (outside of Boyd) who could legitimately see playing time next year.
Apeness was very strongly linked to Essendon at pick 26 apparently.

Any one know how many players the AFL invited up to the Gold Coast?

Don't know exact numbers but don't they usually just invite around 15-20 who they think will go first round or thereabouts?

It would be embarrassing for the AFL if a club pulled a complete shock and drafted someone who wasn't even there.

I'd say 15-20 would be close to the mark.

Please enlighten us. You seem to have a good grasp of our development programme
You're a rabble on and off the field right now. You just replaced a coach after trade week, you lost important leadership players in McEvoy and Dal Santo and your captain has a year or two left max. Your current development and structure doesn't look great, hopefully Richo turns that around.

My original point which so many people have jumped on is that development is more important than picks, and I back Collingwood to do more with their picks than the Saints/Lions do with there's. This isn't a specific attack on the Saints, the same could be said of a lot of clubs. Our development sucked also.

Very happy with hawthorns draft they got what they were lacking pace in all three of there picks

How many Saints draftees since 2009 remain on their list?(not including this years draft)Thought I seen somewhere that most of them are not there anymore.
We turned over almost half our list in the two offseasons prior to this one and almost all of those we've brought in in that time are still on our list, hence only having the 3 live picks last night and no picks in the PSD or rookie draft last year.

Our drafting prior to 2011 was crap, as has been mentioned ad nauseam, but pretty much everyone on our board on here looks to be very happy with those we've drafted with the picks we've had in the last two drafts (2011 and 2012), since the arrival of Pelchen, Elshaugh, Bains and co. and that has continued since we found out who we got last night, where pretty much everyone is thrilled with the combo of Billings (who easily won the vote of who we wanted at pick 3, prior to the draft), Dunstan and Acres (who won the vote of who we wanted at picks 18 and 19, not that that means anything).

Happy with our draft 3 forwards (small/medium) in Lennon, Lloyd and Gordon (Lloyd and Gordon being mature age talents who should be able to make an instant impact). Our forwardline was our biggest issue and with King being injured a lot in 2013, Nahas gone, White gone and Knights doing his knee, it gives us a bit of depth.

Not sure if we have a PSD pick but definitely have a few rookie spots open so hopefully we can finish off a solid off season by adding a few speedsters to the list (Batsanis who is training with us is a possibility) and maybe also Matt Thomas formerly of Port for midfield depth.

One thing I found odd was GWS taking McCarthy at 14. Could they plan to turn him into a KPD? I know depth is great but there's no way you could fit Cameron, Patton, Boyd and McCarthy in the one forward line. Would have thought they have other more pressing needs such as KPD like Gardiner or a developing ruck.

Apeness will play 100+ games. Sandilands and Pav are almost done, there are no guarantees with Griffin's knee, Hannath played well when required but is still raw, Moller won't make it. Clarke is their only sure thing IMO.

He's also not West Australian.

lived in WA for 7+ years. has a large amount of family over here

Hahaha. I look forward to our picks playing 100 games each a making a mockery of the 'experts' again.

Yeah would have thought of anyone has earned the benefit of the doubt by now, it is Wells.

Think Brisbane have done really well at first glance. GWS are just trolling everyone now.

I was elated when Geelong picked Lang and then Freo Appeness, which cleared the way for Acres to get to us. No guarantees that he'll be better than those two or anyone else, but shit he looks and sounds good. Have wanted Billings since I saw him play at the champs and also liked Dunstan a lot.

Geelong picking Lang was the highlight for me. He is going to be a gun and you would have expected the Cats to have a bit of first hand insight into how good his inside/outside game is and the upside given rapid improvement.
