I think you're wrong. Personally I loathe league, But I have watched SOO and the grand final because I'm on the couch when it's shown. If those league matches were on a Saturday arvo, I wouldn't be watching the Tele so I wouldn't see it.

I don't get why you would watch something you loathe, seems a bit silly to me. Especially when there are other things on like Sunday night on 7 and what ever movie 10 decide to show. Plus movies on 11, GO and 7 mate.

If you don't like something there are hundreds of other alternatives to do. Even Bunnings and Coles are open when the GF is on.

The big win the AFL has is by putting games on live. Even me as a League fan by birth, will watch a Saturday night AFL game over the crap that gets served up as Saturday night entertainment....

Saturday afternoon is a deadset ratings black hole, some of the figures this year have been shocking. It's not the 1970's, it's a working day for a huge number of people now.

As far as the Grand final numbers go, i'd be interested in seeing the audience reach figure in comparison to other years.

SEN just stated the AFL Grand Final's Reach was 6.244 million people.

Looks like the AFL will get a lot more for the next rights I like the idea of getting the money up front and buying Docklands

AFL in a grand position to tune in to broadcast rights talks

Healthy year-on-year viewership figures and a spike in grand final television and digital media ratings have the AFL well positioned for the start of official negotiations over what is shaping as a record broadcast rights contract.

Ten chief executive Hamish McLennan told Fairfax Media in April his network would be interested in regaining a slice of the AFL rights it lost in 2011 depending on what was on offer. Ten believes it needs a major winter sport to compete with Nine, which has the NRL, and Seven.

It's believed the AFL would prefer two free-to-air rights holders and Foxtel share the broadcast rights, for this would help push the overall deal closer to $3 billion in what McLachlan has already flagged could be a 10-year deal.

The AFL said the TV audience "achieved for the showpiece game of the season was 3.72 million people, with total reach across Australia estimated to be 6.244 million viewers – up on the 2013 grand final ratings".

Media analyst Fusion Strategy said the grand final audience was up almost 3 per cent on last year. Although Fusion said the finals series as a whole was down 3 per cent and had failed to "crack the magical 10 million live metropolitan viewer mark", the figures were still "strong".

In McLachlan's statement, the AFL said it had enjoyed "strong year-on-year TV ratings".

Fox Footy has said audiences for its live matches this season had grown by 2 per cent. However, the cumulative free-to-air television audience has reportedly fallen by 1.2 per cent.

McLachlan added: "AFL fans also engaged with the game in record numbers on digital media as the swing to mobile and tablet devices gathers pace. The 2014 AFL grand final saw the AFL's digital network record more than 1.3 million visitors, up more than 40 per cent from the 2013 grand final."

It'd be interesting to see how much Ch7 have pushed the AFL to move it to night or even twilight..how much extra they'd be willing to pay for the switch. I know it won't be moved from Saturday but Sunday is perfect for twilight/night tv wise, end of the weekend, more causal viewers who might watch it, no NRL prelim either to compete with and you'd think most other networks avoiding top rating programs clashing with the GF
Not sure how much extra they'd pay, but I remember reading that minutes after the drawn 2010 Grand Final, Kerry Stokes was in Andrew Demetriou's ear trying to convince him to play it twilight/evening.

Agree Sunday twilight or evening would be best time for TV viewing figures - many more eyeballs would be home given next day is a work day. But as other have said, the GF is an event and most people know when its on and plan accordingly. Any increase in figures if the GF was to be moved from Saturday afternoon would come mostly from casual or curious followers - which I suppose would adequately describe many viewers in NSW/QLD

I don't think that's true at all. There are plenty of people that can't watch the GF at the moment because they have to work. I guess that's going to be the case no matter when you play it, but it's a lot worse on Saturday afternoon than Saturday night.

I can't see the AFL moving the GF to Saturday night because it would clash with the NRL prelim final and they are very motivated to get NSW/Qld viewers. However, Saturday twilight would definitely increase the ratings and I'd reckon its more than a 50% chance to be in the next deal.

so not even one 7mate show in the top 20, meaning even if the ones up against the grand final were the 21st, 22nd, 23rd, etc top show of the day, at most there would have been around 150,000 people watching them. So by not simulcasting the GF on 7mate, they have denied upwards of 2 million people the opportunity to watch the GF in HD for the sake of at most 150,000 viewers...

Do we have a list of the highest rating sport programs on STV were for 2014? Curious to know how many of them are AFL games.

I doubt whatever was on 7mate at the time of the grand final rated more than 50,000 nationally. And most of them were probably people looking for the grand final.

Exactly,so I can't understand why the simulcast didn't happen, and shouldn't happen next year....

Thanks. So seven of the top-ten sport programs for the year were AFL games whether you include finals or not. It's a big turn around from the previous deal where Fox only had (essentially) the games that 7 and 10 rejected. If we're to get a bigger deal than last time, the big growth will likely come from digital rights, but the rise of AFL on STV suggests maybe Fox will value it a bit more too. I know their motivations are for increased subscriptions rather than ratings, but at a time when steaming services are starting to pick up steam in Aus, sport will increasingly be one of the ways (the only way?) that Fox holds on to its customers, and these figures show that more and more of Fox subscribers watch AFL.
