I'd have Hawkins as quite clearly our most important player. Possibly our best now too.
Settle petal. Elite yes. Better than Sel, hell no!

Has anyone seen the rankings? Who are the elite key forwards if not Hawkins?
In that same article Roughead and Gunston are rated as being elite, along with the small forward Bruest. Who else I have no clue...

I don't think its so much a comparison bw Sel and Hawk as much as it is between an elite MF (and by elite I mean top 2-3 or the game) and a Key Position Power Forward.

And how do you compare them both as they play such different roles that are so critically important to us. Im not sure you can…

All the ranking means is that Hawkins wasn't in their top 10% of FFs, ie he wasn't in their top 2 in the AFL. I don't know who they had there, though.

The main thing to remember about any CD "rankings" is that their value can be summed up in 2 words: "pressure act".

True. I was only responding to the call that he's our most important player. He'd go close but I still think Sel is more critical to our success. He's both our best player and most important imo.

It wasn't a call, it was an opinion. The hint was by the use of the words "I'd have" immediately before the statement.

Ta. I'd be interested to know what measures Roughead is elite in and Hawkins not. On available data they are quite similar.

From where I come from call and opinion are one and the same. You're entitled to your opinion I just disagree with it this time.

Trying to figure out champion data's method of judging players is one of life's mysteries. I know Cloke won't be one of them, leading into 2014 he was removed of elite status and his 2014 season is unlikely to see that change.

One plays for Hawthorn….

Not only that, the club saw no issue in picking up Clark from the same club, so there's no reason to think Blease can't be better than he's shown either. He's good enough to have kicked 5 in a game at senior level, so there is raw ability there to work with.

Rivers has exceeded my expectations, had no idea he was so tough and talented so why not Clark and Blease, a 5 goal game in that side is pretty impressive.

I think we all likee. We just don't all believee;):p
Based on the theory, thou arst only as goodeth as ye's last gig" our last 1/4 against Norf was not too bad at all.

The previous 7 quarters not so much.

Maybe CD just looked at the last 1/4 we played and forgot the other most recent 7….

I find it hard to predict where we'll wind up in 2015 based on the fact that I expected us to drop at least a couple of ladder positions in both 2013/14 - in some ways the finals results in the past two years mean we effectively did I suppose, but still, I've had a whinge about the AFL's diluted talent pool previously and I think in some ways that has helped us hold our ground.

But developing teams like Gold Coast and GWS will continue to improve, and teams like North, Port, Freo and of course the 2014 Grand Final teams are standing in our way.

I can not see us winning a Premiership, or making the Grand Final this year.

In light of that, what would the club want to get out of the season?

While we have Joel Selwood and Tom Hawkins we'll remain competitive; you couldn't have two better players to build a team around.
The defense is still solid, if a little flat-footed at times; we could really use some run and creativity from defense - Enright and Mackie can provide that to an extent, but fresh legs are needed.

But after that things are murky; a fit Steve Motlop is a potential match-winner (and has already won a handful of games off his own boot), Duncan, Caddy and Guthrie are certainly potentially part of our next premiership team - but there are a helluva lot of question marks surrounding the list and I just don't think the team will have the kind of cohesion that's needed to seriously challenge.

7th, and I'm hoping at least the majority of those question marks are cleared up by seasons end.
