I rate him the best because he has been able to re-invent the wheel since he became Coach at the Hawks e.g Lets draft left footers who can hit a target......then lets chip the ball around to break the zone........all the gun players having the ability to play in all positions when necessary.....e.t.c

Also the fact he has kept this group motivated and hungry after three in a row is a testament to the Coach and no one else.
That part I heard straight from Hodges mouth a few weeks ago.

Even Craig Bellamy has asked Clarkson to come in and speak to his team.........just quietly I rate Bellamy as a great Coach also.

The Coach is King in my eyes I think you and Saintly Viewed underestimate that fact but again that is just my opinion.
Motivation. There is that word again. Very important. What a load of bull dust that Buckley expects the players to self motivate. That is what a coach is supposed to do.

Partially agree. A coach should direct the focus and the finishing touch, not the ground work. For on field motivation you need a functional leadership group.
Hawks have been playing so long together, they are one big leadership group by now.

None of us really know how Bucks relates to the players in the inner sanctum. We can only make inferences based on little bits and pieces. What we can say for sure is that whatever Bucks is doing it is not working.

You do realise the players are there hour upon hour every day.
There's all sorts of coaches, support staff.
There are meetings, there is motivation, there is drills, there is weights etc etc
You really think players are given no motivation at all, it s a cold sterile world only?
Perhaps. Perhaps not.
But if you are there every single day year on year there is only so much "others" can do, at some point self motivation must be applicable, surely?
Mostly coaches, the whole group would, or should be providing an environment of trust, growth and good will.

I'm just over this "motivation" thing that gets dragged up. Can't imagine any club sings koombaya and does hand holding all day every day.
Don't think Clarkson is the warmest human being either, but he still directs traffic very nicely indeed.

Sorry but i can't keep letting this ridiculous criticism keep going through to the keeper. I don't think you and others understand the difference between Motivation and Inspiration. Motivation can only ever come from an internal source. In fact motivation is the opposite to the psyching up, 'ra ra' of players. Bucks seems to recognise this from what he says.

Coaches can't motivate players, all they can do is inspire by providing the environment and opportunity for players to discover what motivates them as individuals. All Bucks can do is understand his players, what it is that motivates them and provide that environment. Now whether he and his team are any good at that is the question.

It's more about the environment that the club creates. For example, at Hawthorn the players partners and family are given free tickets to club events. At Collingwood they have to pay. Hawthorn have a superior environment and culture to us, as do Sydney and Geelong.

Certainly the message is not reaching all. One would expect 800k is a good motivation in itself.

You may be right.
One thing for certain, if we start winning flags magically our environment would improve out of site.
We'd even excuse the ocassional drink driver.

The problem with that theory is that flags don't happen by accident.
No they do not.
But one thing is to start you must have the cattle.
Then the culture, then the support staff., then the will, then the focus
Etc etc etc
Michael Phelps can win 21 Gold Medals (wow!) because he has the motivation, focus, trains properly, eats properly, great technique, great coaching BUT above all THE TALENT! to make all the other elements into super stardom. If he had far less talent maybe all of the above would yield a medal or two, or none.
Good luck to him.

We have the cattle to be contending for finals this year. The fact that we have fallen so far short is why people are dissatisfied. My hope now is the games we have managed to get into the young players will enable us to jump up next year. It is only a slim hope however because I have no confidence in how the club is run.

Our problems run deeper than one player.
Much deeper than that. But you would admit that for that kind of coin you should get an on field leader that stands up, not a VFL player who deflates the team. If all our fwds had the mentality of a Moore or Varcoe and we would be laughing.

As I said, this discussion should be about Buckley's capability to coach the team, not to motivate one over paid player. Over the last three seasons his results have been very poor and he is really lucky to have one more season. Anyone else would have been sacked by now.
