The rule stipulates that "any contact below the knee". Wood made contact with his knee, mostly above it, but undoubtedly partly below it too. Quite clearly too. Free kick every day of the week. The AFL have confirmed as much.
There are none so blind as those who will not see.
It is amazing that 5 years on you are still unable to see that Wood made contact above the knee of Hannebery.
The problem for Hannebery is that he had planted his foot across Wood and had nowhere to go when Wood came in hard for the ball.

Try and watch it without your Sydney bias. The actual contact was initially Wood's torso on Hannebery's upper thigh.

You keep saying this, but the only quote I have seen is a newspaper report alleging it. If you can't produce an actual verified quote that this was said don't keep relying on it.

Even that quote from Luke Ball (who never umpired a game) is not definitive.

Good god man you're seriously clutching at straws here. The umpires boss said it should have been a free, the AFL said it should have been a free, a whole host of players tweeted at the time that it should have been a free.

The only people arguing it shouldn't have are Bulldogs supporters. So don't tell us to open our eyes when 5 years later, you're still only capable of watching it with one.

I am quite capable of seeing with my eyes open. Amazed that it is the decision that everyone suggests should have been paid when the contact was Wood's body to Hannebery's thigh.

Why is there no questioning of Morris on Papley in the third. That is the one that could have been paid.

It is still one of the silliest rules when all that was required was to ban diving in, so that the action was penalised rather than the outcome,

Not sure if you’re being serious.
100% serious.

Sydney had earned home ground advantage but were punished with playing in Melbourne against a Melbourne club.

From midway through the 1st quarter until early in the 4th quarter Sydney had one free kick.

Just a total stitch up of an interstate team from top to bottom.

Swans are protected species, but only compared to other interstate teams.

You are aware the grand final is played at the MCG? Why should they have changed where the final is played just because Sydney finished first? Are you suggesting if GWS finish first the grand final is played at Giants Stadium?

Victorian teams have an inbuilt, inherent advantage over interstate teams come Grand Final time.

It's only fair and reasonable that winning a premiership with a home advantage you didn't earn has an asterisk against it.

Answer the question. If GWS finish first do you honestly believe the final should be played at their home stadium?
No one wins a premiership with home advantage by design as every grand final is at the MCG regardless. How is the MCG home advantage to the Bulldogs? Do you realise how little the Bulldogs play at the MCG and how little they played there in 2016 pre the grand final?

Against a side that had played the exact same amount of games at the MCG that season (H&A and finals). The venue mattered little.

This.
There is no way that the AFL would deliberately rig games or they would lose all of the betting sponsorship. That is not to say that they don't attempt to influence the outcome before the game begins (see non-suspensions of Dunkley (96) and Hall (05)). However, as a Swans supporter living in Melbourne I recall the whole month of increasing media saturation of how this will be the year of a Bulldogs premiership, the 'brave bulldogs', etc until it became a case of anyone who was not an actual Swans supporter would be following the Bulldogs for the 'fairy tale'. The umps don't live in a vacuum and if there was going to be no unconscious bias then they would be supermen. To have one ump having a bad day (and all in the one direction) would be a pretty regular occurrence, to have two would be unusual, but to have all of them making mistakes in basically the same direction suggests that it wasn't cooincidence.
Once again, it was NOT RIGGED, however I believe that the subconscious bias was a real thing. And it wasn't just the frees that were paid, as every footy supporter knows, it is those that are not paid that cause the most frustration and there seemed to be an awful lot of them that went one way.
Anyway, it is five years ago and now is just a GF with an asterisk for Swans supporters. I think we have a lot to look forward to in our future at the moment.
Completely on the money. The hype around the bulldogs “fairytale” was over the top and undoubtedly influenced the umpiring and therefore the outcome of the Grand Final and also the GWS vs Bulldogs Prelim.

Of course we all love an underdog story, but the problem is this kind of thing makes it feel manufactured and fake. Like most neutrals I started the game wanting the bulldogs to win - I remember sitting at the Hahndorf pub at half time thinking “this is a stitch up” and then wanting Sydney to beat the fix. Honestly it spoiled what could have been a genuinely great sports story.

Waiting for a non-Victorian run at a flag to be deemed a fairytale and enjoy the armchair ride. Won’t happen, and certainly won’t get a blessed run from the umpires.

On the back of the league coming out publicly stating they wanted to investigate a lack of Victorian premierships, the AFL Commissioner publicly stating he wanted a Bulldogs flag, and a Victorian mortgage on premierships since said investigation - You can hardly blame fans for being skeptical about the lack of integrity in the AFL.

By this reckoning do you agree the prelim between Sydney and Geelong should have been played at Kardinia Park then? Noting the GWS vs Dogs prelim was played at Giants/Spotless Stadium.

Time to put this ridiculous thread to bed. The grand final was won. It's over. There may have been some incorrect umpiring decisions but that happens in every game. Most dog fans were and, still are, enormously happy with the result and think threads such as this are laughable. If it makes a handful of Sydney and other disgruntle supporters feel better to present these pathetic conspiracy theories, go your hardest. Bulldogs fans don't bother responding; there's absolutely no point in trying to change the minds of these poor deluded souls.

We know it won't change their minds, because that would require a reasoned look back at the game.

Meanwhile we can replay it from time to time and just enjoy the achievement and include the other 3 finals as well.

While ever threads like this exist, they just remind us of that beautiful day in October 2016.

That's all well and good but you won with a home advantage you didn't earn, and on the back of the Swans received one free kick from half way through the 1st quarter to early in the 4th quarter.

We are the only team to have won 4 finals under the current final 8 system. 2 of those wins were interstate.

Not sure why an alleged Adelaide supporter should even care that much.

Newbold got what Newbold wanted, I don’t know how, given the evidence, this can be disputed.
