Heard some interesting stuff in the last few weeks about how our half forwards have been instructed to play.

(From a father of a young player).

Basically the role of a half forward is to protect and release the midfielders like tay adams, pendles etc. Specifically at centre clearances and stoppages forward of center.

Is it just me or is that stupidest f***ing thing youve ever heard?? Shouldnt a half forward be instructed to be creative, and use their footy smarts ?? Shouldnt the midfield be releasing the half forwards?!?!? When u hear stuff like that u can understand our impotence forward of centre - also why collingwood is where it is atm

It really depends on the context of the instruction. It makes enormous sense that at stoppages in the attacking part of the ground the best stoppage and clearance players are afforded the chance to do their work by team mates blocking and creating space at the balldrop and this is often the role of the 5-6 forward (high half forward or defensive wingman). It makes no sense in transition as you want the forward being exactly that. This is a concept that is becoming prevalent even in rep junior footy.

Makes a lot of sense actually about the way we play. Our half forwards do get sucked up the ground and aren't there to receive at the turnover. It happened s lot v the dogs in round one and the saints yesterday

Not just our half forwards though. How many times this year have we got the all at the wing or on half back looked up and there was no one home. Moore and White been caught down the ground nany times already so then we stop prop switch and turnover.

We don't need you to defend and suggest our pick up in Mayne will be "vindicated" when it's clear he isn't in our best 22 and is just about finished as a footballer.
$2m over 4yrs- I can see why you want to vindicate but just stop.

He then goes on to talk about finals and that it is still realistic.
Every time this guy opens his mouth it's so far fetched from reality that it is embarrassing.

What is the role of the forward pockets? To protect the half forwards protecting the mids so they can be released?!

What's wrong with a see-ball get-ball kick-goal strategy in the forward line?!! The more successful players seem to get by quite comfortably by swishing around, swooping on the ball and kicking goals. Forwards are generally encouraged to attack the goals in an offensive manner, rather than provide the front line of defence in the forward zone.

No wonder we don't seem bothered about recruiting a genuine small forward when all we want is defenders at both ends of the ground.
