I think our first draft pick will be used on Brander if there or Coleman-Jones from S.A. Hope we get one of these 2.
Brander will go early, top 5, probably top 3. If we lose Reid then I'd be looking at bundling whatever we can (Reid compo plus our first) to get to Brander. Absolutely ideal replacement. I'd be looking at St Kilda and checking if they would like to swap two first for one of theirs..... Just don't think we'll have the tickets to do it.

I like CCJ too but not sure what to do with him as he's essentially another Cameron, we only just brought him in. O'Brien looks a good fit but I'm not sold on anyone else really. The compromises come pretty quickly this year, the top end is good but it drops away reasonably quickly after that. bundle everything you can so that you can get in early and go home early would be my suggestion.

Brander had a really good game against Vic Metro in the final round of the U18 Championships. He kicked a few goals and took a lot of contested marks. Until then he had been a bit underwhelming and been more chance to slide.

Also Cal Twomey has put out his first draft rankings. Around our likely pick seems to be mainly Victorian centre mids (Dow, Clark, Constable) and half back flankers (Coffield, Garner, Petruccelle).

Just to bump this thread along. AFL.com have released the current draft order after round 16.

If you believe that Reid and Jones will follow their brothers would you accept pick 4 and 14 for them?

I realise Reid is a free agent but if we said we'd match no matter what they'd be sent to the draft table to get their man. We could probably swing something like Reid and 28 for 4 and 36.

Pick 14 for Jones is essentially what we paid for him, that's more than fair.

So would you do it? Draftees cost a heap less than Reid and Jones and 3 1st round picks for a team that's finals destined and building is nothing to be sniffed at....

We're definitely playing our selves out of the cream of the crop. I'm not sold on anyone in that range. I hope the TAC and Colts comps turns up a few bolters

It was something like pick 6-8 plus Mccarthy for pick 3
Yes they did a deal of 3 picks including pick 7 to improve their Academy points. But essentially the principle was a pick inside the top 10 was required.

Dixon was a cleaner trade example as no Academy tradup was involved. And that was a 1st and 2nd rounder.

I think Reid's value while off injured was pretty much Vardy like. But he's a real trade target now. Not a steakknives player.

I really would be annoyed if either of them left. We have put a heap of development into jones and he is just what we have needed for a long time : pace and foot skills. On top of that he is tough. It is notoriously difficult to get a good key forward outside the first round or even the top 10. Reid would be a massive loss. We would either have to play tippet and buddy together or turn one of our key defenders in the neafl into a forward if we did not recruit an immediate option. I believe they are both worth top ten picks but we usually bend over ever so slightly in trades, eg, there is no way Mitchell was not worth a top ten pick. If the club had any foresight hawthorns pick this year would be ours and as it stands that would of been fairer. Another recent example, Jetta for Sinclair. For those arguing he wants to go home and has us over a barrel forget it. I would of been happy for the club to say to Lewis, you're going to the draft. The difference would of only been Sinclair. It would have set a standard, regardless of the outcome. As it stands, because of these two trades, other teams would be right to think we are an easy target.

As an aside, in the event they both leave, I predict we will give away our first round pick and Sam Reid to Collingwood for their first rounder. I think Melbourne have a heap of inside midfielders but no pace in the middle. Jones will go for their first rounder. Another two reamings.

It's not just other clubs watching what we do but also our own players. Showing respect to a player who wants to leave is good for morale of the group

My point is gws will not strengthen us directly or indirectly.
GWS don't need to worry about how other clubs improve. They have enough draft picks, speed and talent that they can leave everyone else in their dust. Strengthening the Swans with a mid who isn't breaking into their team would not worry the Giants.

I think this a key strength (and arguably also weakness) for our club.

We know we have to be happy to let players leave in order to ensure they are happy when they are drafted.

The days of drafting players who refuse to come (Rocca etc) were dark days.

So yes. We instill a good morale. But we also broadcast to the greater AFL community the message that our list is vulnerable.

Mitchell, Parker, Heeney, Hanners, Reid, Jones...That's a lot of quality players to be targeted in a short period. We're just lucky so many wanted to stay.

No offence but I think that is a really soft argument. Is there any evidence of this occurring that you can think of?

Don't agree. We are in direct competition in more ways than one.

A player leaving not getting to the club of their choice or getting their through the draft affects the remaining members of the team? Wouldn't it affect the player leaving? What does Dane rampe care if Jetta goes to free, wc or Melb? As for draftees they are either willing to come or not. If they are already thinking of how they could get out of here in two years time if chosen who gives a f... about their feelings.
