Sam Collins if at all possible. Let AA develop as a mobile 2nd ruck fwd. Collins could contribute from day 1 if needed. Vital while we are near th e flag. AJ needs to drop down and prove he can play again. I agree he's just clogging the list atm.

Wouldn't mind seeing Nick Holman (Central Districts) get a go.

Was in the same U18 carnival as Zac Jones and they played similar roles & styles (HBF/mid). Holman for Vic Metro, Jones for Vic Country.
Jones quicker and a bigger kick, but both hard as nails*.
Holman played some games for Carlton and has spent the last 2 years in the SANFL, racking up impressive performances/numbers, primarily as a full time midfielder.
Would have the flexibility to play a lock down role, in all areas of the ground, and be ready to go RD 1 if needed.

*Always remember he got reported playing for Carlton v Hawthorn for a late round arm on Breust and a Hawthorn player came in to remonstrate and Holman 'Dustied' him on his backside.

OVERVIEW

Angus Styles has had a reasonable season with showing off some good traits at all levels for Vic Metro, Sandringham Dragons and for his school Caulfield Grammar. Styles can play as a half back flank and up on the wing, with one of his better games of the season coming for Sandringham Dragons with 33 disposals and five tackles against 2017 premiers Geelong Falcons back in Round 11. Styles is a hard worker and has good vision around the ground to get the ball off to teammates.

STRENGTHS

  • Endurance
  • Agility
  • Vision
  • Balance
Styles is a good runner on the outside and his endurance is a key strength. At the National Combine, Styles ran a six-minute 17-second 2km time trial (placing him in the top 10) and also recorded a strong Yo-Yo test with a score of 21.4. On the outside he can run hard all day and can give multiple efforts in a short burst without requiring a break on the bench.

Styles changes direction quickly, especially across half back – when manovering the opposition forwards, possessing a good agility base. At the National Combine, Styles’ agility test score was 8.54 seconds.

When he has the ball in hand, Styles makes good decisions using his good vision. Styles can kick the ball off either foot – showing his good balance – but is able to find targets under pressure. His vision to be able to look to switch the ball, or find a teammate by hand in the contest is very good.

IMPROVEMENTS

  • Speed
  • Contested ball
Compared with other outside midfielders and running defenders, Styles lacks some speed. While he has good vision and it helps him make good decisions – his speed can see him get caught out at times. He doesn’t have the ability to burst from the pack and at times, he can get beaten by the quicker opposition forwards or midfielders. His speed is likely an area that he will look to improve in the short term. At the National Combine, Styles ran a time of 3.18 seconds.

Styles’ contested ball numbers have improved throughout the season, but it is still an area of improvement that the outside midfielder can improve. His contested possession percentage in the TAC Cup this season was 22.5 per cent, where he played across half back and the wing for the Dragons.

DRAFT PROJECTION: Late/Rookie

SUMMARY

Styles has showed some good signs throughout the year in the TAC Cup and has some traits that can make him a decent player at AFL level on the outside. There’s no questioning Styles’ commitment towards the AFL dream and possessing good vision and decision making across half back means that he can become a good AFL player in the future. He is expected to be a late-to-rookie pick in the draft because of his lack of speed playing as a largely outside midfielder, but his balance to kick on either foot is impressive.

#29 Joel Amartey – A lot has been said about his after the siren miss, but the Dragons ruckman has been a big improver since Round 1. Was the clear best ruckman on the day with 27 hitouts, but his pressure and tackling around the ground was an important facet of the game. I think he might find a home in the back half of the draft.
