Training The 2019 preseason training REPORTS thread

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

I headed down this morning for about an hour with a coffee in hand. Some brief notes below.

Petrucelle and Ozzie Allen are both primed for early games. Skills and tails are up and the other boys are getting around them.

Petch was particularly great in breaking lines on the defending side of a kick out/break from defence drill. He had a genuine roadrunner moment on a half forward flank position and no one could even tap him on the bum. Took 3 bounces and goaled.

OAllen took everything so cleanly and outbodied anyone on him. Took a decent mark with the flight when the defender was in a better position and always lowers his eyes looking for a pass.

Gov was jogging and then walking around the drills that were happening. He looked skinny compared to his usual self, doesn't look like he has hit the gym either, whether that is due to his ribs only the conditioning guys will know.

Darling has also lost muscle mass so maybe he will roam up a flank a bit more to be a link out of defence. Hands were solid but he did look a bit lost at times in the drills maybe a lack of sleep due to his new baby.

Hurn was really vocal and just kept nailing 40m pass after 40m pass on a half size field in a 12 on 12 defensive clearance sim. He and Shepp look like generals along the half back line

Frankie Watson was involved heavily in rebounding drills and he is both tall, quick and very smart by foot. The players and coaches were looking to get the ball into his hands.

Redden was his usual bullish self and worked well alongside Sheed in the drills.

Gaff has beefed up and is quite stocky through the arms and shoulders now good signs for round 3.

Masto was running laps but not much else.

Vardy was the primary ruck and was gliding on the ground like a graceful gazelle and a few of the younguns (Bines?) were getting involved.

Shuey will be going top 3 Brownlow this year he looked in bloody good knick, low centre of gravity v-lined the ball and didn't fumble once.

Ryan was sticking everything and fitness didn't look an issue, coaches were adamant on him lining up and taking a set shot for anything he took within 40m.

Willie was playing through the middle and running towards goal in a lot of drills. I feel he will be used as a slingshot as we try and implement new tactics with the kick in rules.

First time down to training or watching a lot of our 2's and rookies so not all faces were familiar.

*TLDR: We are going b2b and Petch and OAllen are up for early games and spots will be theirs to lose when injured/suspended players return.

Good writeup thanks. How’d Jake Waterman look? Asking for a hungry tigerish friend.

To be honest, I didn't see him much and he didn't really draw attention to himself or do anything outstanding. As I said from what I saw today I would expect Oscar Allen to be given the first crack at the vacant LeCras role with Petch in for Cripps.

Forgot to mention that Jackson Nelson also looked good in the backline drills, however, I think Watson is a step ahead and will get first crack if Jetta or Masto are missing early in the season.

Halfway through the session it dawned on me that I hadn’t seen him so tried to find him without success. Don’t think he was out there

Thanks for the write up!

How was Matty Allen looking?

Tks for the effort and the write-up. It's bloody cold over here and this time of year is the worst. Quality training reports are a good antidote to footy doldrums on the wrong side of the planet.

So yesterday’s session after driving through peak hour traffic to get to Lathlain by 8.40

Players doing their usual stretching as I get there.

• Masten and Cameron running the boundary so guess they’re not going to be involved
• Barrass with main group for now which is good to see
• Ainsworth on mcg and Williams doing rehab. Williams must have looked up Karl Langdon, seen the resemblance and gone back to ginger rather than dyed blonde hair. Makes him harder to recognise
• Venners running boundary. This is a progression from previous sessions where he’s either been absent or just walking
• A AFLX ground marked out on each oval for competitive work. Playing with Gaelic footy style round balls now - wtf
• No JK and haven’t spotted Hickey or Brooksby
• Gov out there but wandering around doing sfa
• Waterman? Can’t see him
• Ball movement drill now with players defending to provide pressure - Mutimer getting more involved than usual
• Oscar Allen is super competitive. A pass directed to him was intercepted due to an off target kick, upset he bowls into Riach knocking him on his arse. Later he was determined to get a loose contested ball. There’s something about this kid that makes you confident he’s going to be something special
• Tb doing run throughs now as contact work has started
• Bines lays a solid tackle on Hurn taking him to the ground and earns praise from his teammates
• Good mark by Achee opposed to Hurn
• Hammer (Brayshaw)working hard. He’s had a good session
• Nothing wrong with Ryan’s wheels. Tank is an issue but when he gets going is quite a sight
• Simmo questioning Pratt why jetts doing kick in during match sim. Didn’t hear the answer but Simmo adamant we want him across half back rather than taking the goal square kick
• Rotham beats darling one out in a marking contest
• Looks like we’ve got one of the umpires at training as he’s blowing the whistle as if it’s a game. #freekickeagles
• Arch has been impressive
• Notice the change to the 50m rule where players no longer have to wait for the umpire to set the new mark - players are just bolting off their line and playing on. Going to make a difference once the season starts
• Session coming to an end - Ainsworth doing some ball handling work with an assistant but not using left hand

Come 10.30 or thereabouts and they’re finishing up so just under 2 hours which is a bit shorter than previous sessions. Credit to the players who happily sign autographs for the waiting kids even though they’re hot and sweaty. Darling even holds a baby for a photo without dropping it

Wonderful report. Thanks for that - good nes on Oscar , Hammer and Achee ~ we need these guys to step if we are to have a chance at B2B.

That last line is harsh but funny.. 😁

You get the sense players are aware there’s a few spots up for grabs come round 1 - more contact/competitive work at yesterday’s session than I’ve seen previously and there was a noticeable step up in intensity.

Tackles aren’t a tap on the shoulder or a friendly hug, they’re sticking and taking the player to the ground. Marking contests are just that, a contest, rather than a defender giving token opposition so the forward can practice marking

Keys is Oscar purely training forward? Is he ever around contests as a mid?

Does venables have skills?

On iPhone using BigFooty.com mobile app
Purely as a forward.

Put a line through the notion he’ll ever run through the midfield. Doesn’t suit him and isn’t going to happen

And yes, not that he’s showing them atm

Anything on Foley fellas?
Had a good session on Wednesday I thought. Got involved in the match sims and found a bit of the ball.

That's a pretty mean feat particularly the way Jack was marking the ball last year. I have always liked the look of Rotham, do you think he will make it in the AFL ? Unfortunately it is not possible to get down to training for me.
