Training The 2019 preseason training REPORTS thread

So yesterday’s session after driving through peak hour traffic to get to Lathlain by 8.40

Players doing their usual stretching as I get there.

• Masten and Cameron running the boundary so guess they’re not going to be involved
• Barrass with main group for now which is good to see
• Ainsworth on mcg and Williams doing rehab. Williams must have looked up Karl Langdon, seen the resemblance and gone back to ginger rather than dyed blonde hair. Makes him harder to recognise
• Venners running boundary. This is a progression from previous sessions where he’s either been absent or just walking
• A AFLX ground marked out on each oval for competitive work. Playing with Gaelic footy style round balls now - wtf
• No JK and haven’t spotted Hickey or Brooksby
• Gov out there but wandering around doing sfa
• Waterman? Can’t see him
• Ball movement drill now with players defending to provide pressure - Mutimer getting more involved than usual
• Oscar Allen is super competitive. A pass directed to him was intercepted due to an off target kick, upset he bowls into Riach knocking him on his arse. Later he was determined to get a loose contested ball. There’s something about this kid that makes you confident he’s going to be something special
• Tb doing run throughs now as contact work has started
• Bines lays a solid tackle on Hurn taking him to the ground and earns praise from his teammates
• Good mark by Achee opposed to Hurn
• Hammer (Brayshaw)working hard. He’s had a good session
• Nothing wrong with Ryan’s wheels. Tank is an issue but when he gets going is quite a sight
• Simmo questioning Pratt why jetts doing kick in during match sim. Didn’t hear the answer but Simmo adamant we want him across half back rather than taking the goal square kick
• Rotham beats darling one out in a marking contest
• Looks like we’ve got one of the umpires at training as he’s blowing the whistle as if it’s a game. #freekickeagles
• Arch has been impressive
• Notice the change to the 50m rule where players no longer have to wait for the umpire to set the new mark - players are just bolting off their line and playing on. Going to make a difference once the season starts
• Session coming to an end - Ainsworth doing some ball handling work with an assistant but not using left hand

Come 10.30 or thereabouts and they’re finishing up so just under 2 hours which is a bit shorter than previous sessions. Credit to the players who happily sign autographs for the waiting kids even though they’re hot and sweaty. Darling even holds a baby for a photo without dropping it

Thanks for the write up. Much appreciated.

I'm going to be in Perth for a short stay from Thursday 14th to Tuesday 19th. Super keen to get down to watch the boys train. Will any of those days work based on when the club generally has its open session?

Cheers for the effort on getting out there for those of us who can't, much appreciated :thumbsu:

Sounds like Ah Chee and O.Allen are putting their hands up for early selection.

It's only a matter of time before people realise that our next Norm Smith and Brownlow medallists are these two.

Interesting with regard to Jetta on the kick-ins - can only think that with the rule change we are intending for our best running ball-carriers to be in a position where a rapid chain of possession can advanced and expose the opposition defence before it is properly set.

So far the open session has been on the Wednesday each week so if that continues you’re shit out of luck

You could however do what ROYAL EAGLE did and take a punt on either the Monday or Friday that they’ll be at Lathlain

Thanks mate. Will give it a try. Might see if I can call the club to confirm.

Yep thats what I think. Jetts can get the ball and just go, could run it 30-50m then hit up a target at CHF.
we will see clubs doing that this year as the ability to set up a zone from an in-play behind will be limited. Guys like Jetts for us or Wilson for Freo will take full toll. How teams counter this will be interesting- Zones will need to cover 3/4 of the ground. Fast, high pressure forwards will be even more important this year to chase down or pressure the ball carrier.

How is Matt Allen looking in the midfield, have you noticed him at all around the stoppages in drills?

Maybe this is why Watson has been talked up by the coaching staff this pre-season?

His 2017 season in the WAFL before his ankle injury was very good where he was using his pace to break lines. Last year i noticed he was playing more defensive and i wonder if that was just to get that aspect into his game or it was circumstance since their backline was touch and go all year.

Tried this last year with limited success but have decided to try again. Thread is to be dedicated to training reports so that they’re easy to find and aren’t lost amongst the general jibber jabber in the other preseason thread

So if you make your way down to a training session and want to share your thoughts, post them here. Genuine questions about any of the reports are also welcome.

Can we stay on point all, so frustrating to come on this page and see comments about triceps, calves and other non-training session relevant conversation. We have plenty of other threads for this type of conversation and feel for the mods who have to delete chains of irrelevant chat that for some is funny and for others not so funny.
Keys and others have made a real effort to bring quality training reports to those of us who can't make it to training, or are just interested in knowing what's happening with our team outside of major print and online publications, so please respect them by sticking to the original post from Keys.

According to Hutch, Ollen has done a bit of work with the mids and also some ruck-chopping-outage.

My guess is that the coaches are keen to get him into the seniors in any role they can.

The only good thing about an 8am start for training is that it finished before it got too hot. Peak hour traffic from north of the river to Lathlain sucks balls.

It’s clear that the Wednesday session each week is their low intensity one which no doubt explains why it’s also the one that’s open to supporters. Not a lot done today and the whole thing wrapped up around 9.40.

Essentially it was stretching, short distance kicking to warm up, tackle drill, skill work in line groups and about 10 minutes of relatively low key match sim. As such there’s not much to offer by way of insight but these are my random observations :

• No shows - Naitanui, Cripps, Exxon, Schofield, Brooksby and JK
• Waterman walking the mcg boundary with some jogging and lateral movement exercise later on as he recovers from a rolled ankle.
•Ainsworth in the middle of the MCG practising his kicking before doing a power of running. At least he’s building his tank as he rehabs
• Venners jogging the boundary at barely half pace. Noises from the club are he’ll be right for round one but I’m unconvinced
• Williams also doing rehab possibly from the shock of being compared to Karl Langdon - the bleached blonde look has gone either way
• Cameron drifted over to rehab once the competitive work started. The club, quite rightly, seem to be nursing him through preseason- he really is a boy amongst men and will need at least a season before he’s close to ready physically for AFL
• Duggan bugged out early (before the kick to kick ended) but I have no idea why. Didn’t look injured
• In better news Barrass, gov and Yeo took part in the entire session although Gov avoided any contact
• Gov skips tackle drill does sprints instead
• Tackle focus on getting in low around waist and wrapping arms up whilst driving a shoulder into the midriff. No going high
• Players split into line groups - Nelson and arch with mids
• Oallen pulled out of forwards to practice ruck knocks with Varkey. Not opposed to each other just against a jumping bag and knocking a ball down to redden who has seemingly pulled out of main training (apparently got a bit of a knock to the leg but doesn’t appear to be any cause for concern)
• Hurn spending a few minutes passing on some knowledge to Riach about positioning
• Match sim now but around 10 players sitting it out - mainly the younger players but also Rotham, Mallen and Mutimer which I found interesting. Might be reading too much into it but it looked like a group of players furthest away from senior selection
• Brander makes a couple of back to back errors - not working hard enough defensively on his opponent then turning the ball over moments later with an ill directed pass into the forward line
• Ryan chastised by Graham for not chasing after the turnover. His spray to Brander for the errant kick maybe a contributing factor for the comment
• Watson been good across half back. Looking more and more like a long term Jetta replacement. He’s making good progress
• Petruccelle again impressive
• Shuey and Gaff a class above and finding the ball at will
• Wrapping up and Simmo having an extended one sided chat with Mutimer. Can’t hear what’s being said but Simmos body language is quite demonstrative- it’d be a stretch to say he was giving Mutimer a bake, however he was clearly unhappy about something

That’s about it other than to say GFY to the person who left a note on my windscreen saying i parked too close to their driveway. I wasn’t blocking it so get ****ed.

Duggan on the radio this morning saying that Luke Foley was impressing him the most out of the new guys, which i found surprising as there hasn't been much talk about him. Maybe he's closer to him being in the backline. Also said that Williams marks like Gov and clunks everything at the highest point - good signs.

Side note - Duggan speaks very well and if his form keeps getting better, will surely be a future leader at our club (i know one of his attributes when drafted was 'leadership qualities').

Did O'Neill train? Keys

From Travis King's article on Tuesday:

"Meanwhile, top draftee Xavier O'Neill, taken with pick 28 last year, is being carefully managed after knee trouble.
The Eagles are confident the 18-year-old midfielder will be fit for their first WAFL practice game at the end of March.
"He will start back on the Alter-G this Saturday and we expect him to be on ground on Monday," Vozzo said.
"We're still confident he'll build into the trial games.
"He had a good pre-Christmas short burst with us and some minor knee issues which we're now building him back from.""

Actually one thing i did forget to mention and just remembered was that he had a "knee cleanup" after the season, but he's all good now. He said that the issue was something that he would have to deal with for the rest of his career. I'm assuming it's a cartilage issue, but still he's only 22 ffs..

No. Was listed as Exxon in my list of absentees so you might have missed the reference

Has a knee issue apparently- from an article on the clubs website :

Of the new guys Foley is the only one that’s come close to doing full training- O’Neill, Williams, Cameron and Edwards have all had restricted preparations. That said he is working hard and I’m getting better at picking him up during drills after struggling to notice him earlier

And yes Williams does have sticky hands, think he’s going to be a beauty

Agree entirely with your views on Duggans leadership potential- very much a prominent figure in the younger group. Crazy to think he’s not long ago just turned 22

Almost entire Eagles squad doing some form of training this morning. Biggest positive was Cripps (toe) back running after surgery last month, alongside Kennedy, who was unsighted last week. No reason to think JK won't be right for practice games.

More
Yeo, McGovern and Barrass involved in full skills work, as well as Redden after knee scare last week. Duggan took part but was slightly modified after leaving training last Wed. Nic Nat looked agile jumping hurdles and testing landing.

Really like the vibe off the group at the moment- Masto seemed genuine in the presser when he said he’s been working with Smith even if they are competing for potentially the same spot.

Granted, we just won a flag, the group should be up & about. But I’m stoked that the competition for a spot hasn’t got in the way of the boys working hard for each other.

Thank you to all those who have gone to training for us. Most greatly appreciated.
