Didn't we try this with Luke Ball? Even drafted Luke... Tapscott at 18 for the lolz.

Will never forget that pause. I bet there were some serious heart palpitations happening from Ball and Collingwood for a couple of seconds there.

So my dad just came around to visit and said “guess what? I’m buying a caravan!”

I had a giggle then told him to wait as he’s just missed caravan buying season.

He just looked at me blankly with that you’re a dickhead look on his face.

Greetings. First time, long time.

This is a huge test for our club. An opportunity to bring in a talented and highly skilled outside mid/small forward has just fallen fortuitously in our lap. Exactly the type of player we are crying out for, for such a long time.

Jack Martin is currently a good footballer who has shown he has the capacity to be very good and quite possibly become elite at AFL level. He has clearly not enjoyed living and plying his trade on the barren and soulless confines of Metricon, but you can imagine his delight at being able to strap on the guernsey of a traditional Victorian club and weave his magic on the MCG in front of true footy fans with genuine passion. This is a young man who will relish such an opportunity and rise to new levels of output and performance.

This is a cut throat competition, won and lost just as much by clubs on the margins of decisions they make off field, as those that are made off it. Carlton will no doubt try to bully us and will probably scheme with Martin’s manager to try and get us to baulk at calling Jack’s name out in the PSD, but we must not be cowed by these tactics and do everything we can to convince the player that his future lies at the Melbourne Football Club. Bring in the heavy hitters by all means - Goodwin, Richo, May, Kolo and of course Nev. Hell, get other past indigenous Demon stars like Flash Davey and Wizard Farmer involved if it might help in any small way. Just do whatever it takes within the bounds of reason to get this bloke over the line, or at least open to a change in the landscape.

Don’t be put off by media reports, the money is there if we were prepared to pay $2million to an injury prone Jamie Elliot over four years. 600k or even 700k per season might seem a high bounty to pay for Martin but consider the opportunity cost at not having to cough up a pick for him in the National Draft, not to mention boost to club morale and the extra memberships such a bold move would generate. Sometimes there are intangibles when calculating the worth of a player that go beyond pure statistical analysis.

God knows we have overpaid players before who have not produced in the red and blue. Players with far less ability, skill and blue sky potential than Jack Martin.

The bottom line is we need this player and he is going to become available to us at no cost in trade via the PSD. Regardless of the noises made by Carlton or his manager, we must call his name out at pick 2 if Gold Coast don’t re-draft him at pick 1, then back ourselves to welcome him with open arms and oversee his transformation into committed, all-in star of the Red and Blue.

Huge test for our Demons this one. So often in the past we have wilted at these moments. Unwilling to put cojones on the line and demonstrate the hard edge that the more successful clubs have. Now, here we are again, about to step up to the plate with a gilt-edged opportunity to to recruit a talented footballer ideally suited to our needs.

What are we going to do? What are Bartlett, Pert, Mahoney, Goodwin and Co truly made of? Same old same old ... or something new ... something better. We’re about to find out.

Ps. F...k Carlton.

Haven’t seen enough of him. But Robbie Young is the type We need. But delisted after a year on the list and another year on his contract. Tells me he’ll be rookied perhaps.
StK payed him out, all yours if you want. Christensen is OOC at the lions and a real chance to be delisted. Might be a good pickup for you if that happens.

We should be bullying Carlton and telling them that unless they can get us something nice, we will pick Martin.

It would be a disaster for their trade period and leave Silvagni with serious egg on his face. They are ripe for the picking.

I can’t think of anything that would work with their current picks so maybe it involves a swap of picks next year - or they need to go split pick 9. Maybe they give us 9 and 43 for 8.

Anyway make them work it out and keep the pressure on.

I must say though, I don’t actually think we should pick a player who genuinely doesn’t want to come to us.

The AFL would be highly suspicious of any deals between us and Carlton which look like draft tampering. I just don't see how Martin can have a huge preference for going to Carlton over us. He might be unnerved at the change for a few days but would quickly get over it. People adjust to the realities they're dealt. He's going to be extremely well renumerated in either case.

Would be nice if we could convince Martin to play here for a reasonable price.

But I disagree that we would be showing our "big cojones mayne" by taking him in the PSD and overpaying him. It would be bad for the team morale if we had a under-performing player who doesn't want to be there getting paid nearly double some of our better players. Based on this year most our players don't deserve the coin either, but at least they have been here and developed and have been part of the improvement of the previous few years.

He could play a role for us and should be paid as a role player. He is still severely overrated as a future star. Regardless of the team you play for if you can't break apart a game after nearly 100 games its never going to happen.

As long as we force Carlton to pay massive overs for him.

If Martin was a star, I woukd agree. But we made a statement that we arent going to overpay average players, so we cant exactly go pay Martin overs to crumb the odd goal 3 times a year.

But we should definately mess with Carlton.

* Carlton. * Carlton indeed.

Screwing over Carlton would be hilarous and totally worht it for them being bitches in recent years

That and Martin is decent when fit

Interesting how your first line has potential, and yet a player saying 'don't draft me as I only want to play at Carlton' is perfectly fine.

What. Martin is allowed to say whatever he wants. That’s not draft tampering because it doesn’t affect our ability to call his bluff and draft him anyway. It’s not even vaguely comparable.

just saying we pay overs for him in the first year or 2, then we adjust the next contract accordingly. we only massively over pay him in the initial contract just so it out bids either you guys or gold coast, that’s what his manager said on SEN at least.

The AFL has already said they won’t allow that.
