And a song to sing as we watch,

Hey Matty Clarke by Kevin (Random260) Wilson :

Hey Matty Clarke you campaigner, where the **** is Sharp
I’ve looked at all these other spuds and there’s no one that I like
I wrote you a ****ing letter and posted about it twice
You dopey ****ing Richmond fart, you forgot my ****ing Sharp

If I wanted a stupid ruckman type, I would’ve bloody asked
And this half back flank and temu mid, you can shove right up your arse
You’ve stuffed the bloody order up, it’s enough to make you spew
But it’s not just me who’s snakey, SGIO is dirty too

Next time I come to see ya, I’m going to punch you in the guts
And I’ll sack the other recruiting knobs and kick Toddy in the nuts
You just wait 'til next year when you go back to the draft
And me and me little GIO come stomping through the door
And we'll say, yeah, you wait for it

Hey Pyke and Woosh you smell his breath
And check his bloodshot eyes
And don't listen to him eagles fans 'cause he tells ****ing lies
He's just a ****ing useless campaigner and he's not even very bright
'Cause the stupid ****in' w***er, forgot me ****in' Sharp

Hey Matty Clarke you campaigner, where the **** is Sharp
I’ve looked at all these other spuds and there’s no one that I like
I wrote you a ****ing letter and posted about it twice
You dopey ****ing Richmond fart, you forgot my ****ing Sharp

It's funny how it interrupted the lyrics XD

Reckon there's legs to the unspoken rule about no more than 2 bids in a row. Makes no sense why we wouldn't do that if Addinsall was the plan.
Wouldn’t be surprised if the AFL have told clubs they can’t do it even though they don’t want to make it part of policy. It wouldn’t be a good look for the telecast if it was just bid after bid. Bet it’s all about the optics

I'm surprised how well people are taking giving away a 2nd rounder to slide up one place ..... Just crazy business
Port Adelaide did this in the 2021 draft to get Josh Sinn and we got their future 2nd.

WCE were clearly worried they wouldn’t get the player they were after and took the punt in what would have been a high pressure cooker environment being on the clock. I’ve seen a lot worse live trades and only need to look at north giving up future first last year for pick 27, which is 100 times more disastrous, but saying that they recovered a little bit this year by getting dovaston who will be great for them.

I think lindsay will be a very good player and he comes with the added benefit of being vic country. He will fit in well with Harley, duursma, cdt, long etc, which should hopefully form a group of kids who are keen to stay in wa for the long term.

I think our recruiting team have done a great job so far this draft/trade period at trying to build a team for long term sustained success and the players they have brought in so far will help significantly in that endeavour.

Duursma
Cdt
Lindsay
Starcevich
Young
Robertson
Macrae
Schoenberg
And whoever we get in the next 2 days.

They should be applauded and we should look at the whole of what has been achieved rather than parts in isolation.

Did GC go into a points deficit? I just don’t understand how they could match all these bids after petracca (- Flanders)?

No. They still have picks 48,49 so had enough points so they had at least ~180 points to spare

If we’d bid on Patterson at 3 instead of leaving it to Richmond to bid at 5 they’d have lost about 345 points extra

So my rough maths is the best we could have done would have been to force them into a maximum deficit of around 150-170 points

There’s no way of knowing if they’d have still matched in that scenario but given the amount of work they did to find trades for extra points I think they would have taken a relatively small deficit- they clearly wanted to keep Addinsall

I posted predraft that the assumption in the phantoms that they wouldn’t match was a falsehood and that’s how it transpired

Also gave no certainty we know if they could match but I suspect we did - they’ve got analytics guys that would have been all over it but we had a crack anyway

Gifting Hawthorn the Saints R2 to guarantee Lindsay if our bid failed doesn’t look great but I’m going to reserve judgement until tomorrow to see how everything else plays out

And I’m happy with the Lindsay pick over the players that went after as I didn’t think he’d still be there when our pick 13 eventually came up

Either way someone needs a pineapple.
The body language and panic in that room was embarrassing !!

Not wrong.

Looked like someone farted.

Hand tapping nervously......

Matty C reaching for the water gulping down the dry taste of burning a F2nd for zero return.

Pyke sitting head down at the back........f......aaa....aaaa.....rrr.....kk..

Like where were the party pies and extra tomato sause to cover these disasters?

FFS.......

Whilst my opinion of Clarke has once again solidified there are two logical reasons for the Saints F2:

1. Dogs offered their own F2 to jump us to get Lindsay
2. Hawthorn actually wanted Lindsay, which I doubt
Why do you doubt Hawks wanted Lindsay? Best fit for them and most phantoms had them taking him.

GCS can go 1167 points into deficit to bid on Academy players, its not about us stuffing our Maths, I assume they were just hoping GCS wouldnt want to take another big hit. Im sure we knew they could always match
ChatGPT reckons they wound up 967 in deficit matching the bids tonight with their draft hand after all their trades at the opening of the draft.

Done — I ran the point-model using the AFL’s 2025 DVI and the 2025 discount rules (10% discount for bids at picks 1–18; fixed 84-point discount for bids at picks 19–36). Sources: the AFL DVI table and 2025 draft-rule explainer. afl.com.au+1

What the model shows

  • Gold Coast’s picks after their draft-night trades (the set we used): 14, 18, 24, 28, 33, 35, 36, 46, 47, 52, 53.
  • Total points Gold Coast had after those trades = 4,345 points.
  • Bids matched (and costs using the 2025 rules):
    • Zeke Uwland — bid at pick 2: gross 2,481 pts → 10% discount (248)net 2,233 pts.
    • Dylan Patterson — bid at pick 5: gross 1,795 pts → 10% discount (180)net 1,615 pts.
    • Jai Murray — bid at pick 18: gross 836 pts → 10% discount (84)net 752 pts.
    • Beau Addinsall — bid at pick 19: gross 796 pts → fixed 84-pt discountnet 712 pts.
  • Total points required to match all four bids = 5,312 points.
  • Shortfall after the trades = 4,345 − 5,312 = −967 points.

What that means

With the pick set we used (which matches the club announcements about the swaps they executed), Gold Coast still would have been about 967 points short of the exact total required to match all four bids — if they’d tried to pay for them purely from those listed 2025 picks.

That confirms why reports said the Suns did additional pick manoeuvring on draft night (and why some of the trades involved future picks or live swaps): the club needed extra draft-value to fully cover the 5,312-point bill for the four academy matches. The shortfall here (~967 pts) matches the narrative that Gold Coast executed a few more small trades / swaps to top up their point pool during the live draft.

I wouldn't trust ChatGPT as far as I could throw it when it comes to AFL drafting

After having some time to calm down after blowing up in other places re: our live trade...

I am generally pretty content with this.

Got the 2 I wanted at the top.
Did think we were going to trade in for Sharp but considering the opposing offer was an F1 from Adelaide then thats fine not doing it.
We got Lindsay which I'm happy with despite my reservations about him as a prospect (****ed me well off that we moved an F2 but alas there's competing stories as to why).
Now have 2 of the next 9 picks with no bid on Tylah yet, I am one of the group that wants us to not take him but we will see. I would quite like to just continually move down the board and accrue future assets.

My biggest issue here is that Hawthorn knew who we were after, and played us for it. Twomey did too.
We were an open book this year and can no longer be viewed as a club without leaks.
I'm quite happy with Lindsay tbh.

The sources don’t look too bad. References the change to the 10% discount and fixed 84 point discount but I take your point.

Just don’t have the time or inclination to work the propeller head DVI stuff out myself.

hilarious there’d be less melts in here if we just grabbed Lindsay without bidding.

Wasn’t initially stoked due to method.

But after looking at his highlights, gee golly gee, this kid is absolutely elite by foot and guess what………. he will be playing FOOTball for the Eagles.

We picked up Duursma and there were no other elite mids in the top end of the draft.
Duursma maybe a mid in time and is the clear number 1 pick, this on potential.
CDT is not a mid, freakish athletic profile with lots to work on, this is on potential.

Cumming and Sharp are the best mids in the draft and we had pick 1 and 2 and 13.
Surely we could have picked 1 of those or traded up from 13 and STK 2nd round for a pick around MEL pick 12 or ESS pick 13 to grab a 1 of the best mids in the 1st round.

Yeah not having a crack at you personally - but during the mock draft I asked for a list of the top 50 candidates in a spreadsheet format so I could workout who was left for my picks

Harley Reid and Colby McKercher were on it.

Get around the new lads!

Perhaps next year we have a bit of a bounce and that pick blows out, probably doesn't, but in the age of high 20s 1st rounds, that pick is a swing in the dark.
