A few things about Rex Hunt stood out to me:

1) The guy turns up 5 minutes before gametime and doesn't even bother to go on air at halftime.
I've never seen or heard anything like it, and it stinks of Hunt thinking he is better than others and that his time is too valuable to waste on pre-game/halftime waffle.

To be fair I believe he is actually told to do that and has been for a little while as listeners have grown a bit tired of Rex Hunt in pre-game and half time discussions. I completely agree with the other stuff though and don't listen to 3aw footy purely because of Rex and the annoying banter between he, Wallsy and Tony Shaw.

Stopped listening to the crap spewed out on 3AW by Mitchell, bitter and twisted Sigley and slimeball Hinch years ago.

Wasn't surprised to hear that Mitchell was advising leftist fraud Les Twentyman, and how can they not find a replacement for Sigley? The good news was Hinch had a big past week with the Gatto incident and the apology from the woman who accused him of rape. Why? It meant that the slimeball didn't have to go after Jane McGrath to get himself some publicity. :thumbsd: And what can one say about hypocrite Hunt. The whole station is really old.

Really? If so, i apologise to Hunt.

It just comes off poorly, seemingly as if he is too good to call football.

The whole station is really old.

It is, isn't it.

If you look at their regular personalities (aside from football people), the youngest would probably be Ross Stevenson, who is 50ish.

Mitchell is late 50's or so, Hinch is 64, Mansfield is 64, Brady is 68 and Sigley is almost 70.

Ernie Sigley in particular is showing his age.
He is horribly self-indulgent (often filling up the traffic segment to complain about how long it takes him to drive the 10kms home to Glen Iris etc.) , has a long history of sacking anyone who dares to disagree with him on air (see John-Michael Howson and Peter Ford) and seems to be struggling to stay relevant.

Time to put him out to pasture.

i don't mind listening to neil mitchell between 8.30-9am when SENs MG is getting on my nerves.

ernie sigley is probably being rewarded for services rendered to the media back in the 70s and 80s and thus still has a job. listen between ad breaks on SEN. could it be an application of the kerry packer/ch 9 cricket/tony greig rule here?

i must be in the minority here in saying i loved steve price on drive what some 7 odd years ago. shock jock radio at its best.

I can't stand Neil Mitchell's show.
He's a shock jock in the guise of a true journalist.

I've never listened to SEN, so the only thing i listen to in the car in the morning is Jon Faine on 774.

Sadly he's trekking all the way to London by car right now, so morning radio is dead for me until he returns in 2009 :(

If it wasn't for Sports Tonight (primarily 6-7pm), I'd have little reason to tune into 3AW.

I loved that show when it was Hookesy hosting with Gerard, but with Dwayne Russell it's a no go zone for me.

I'd rather listen to Fran Drescher on a continuous loop than i would listen to even 10 minutes of Dwayne Russell.

I hear ya, believe me, I hear ya. I was really surprised how they picked Dwayne.

I don't think he's worthy of the gig.

whats the history with Sigley and Michael-Howson and Ford? Would love to know...

To make a long story short, both dared to challenge Sigley on air.

He often makes blatantly ignorant and incorrect statements, and just hates to be corrected.

Both Ford and Howson stood up to him, proved him wrong on something and as a result, got the sack from his show.

Howson actually walked out whilst the show was on air because Sigley got all aggressive and personal when Howson corrected him on a rather minor matter.

After he sacked Ford, he brought in another 'gossip guy' (Craig Bennett, from memory) and at every opportunity he would have a go at Ford, suggesting he was poor at what he did (which is anything but true).

If you listen to his regulars, they're all yes men/women who never once challenge Sigley's views, basically because they know that if they do, they will lose their job.

Ernie Sigley can be quite entertaining (his Friday Lunch segment is often quite good), but he has a huge ego which tends to lessen the quality of his show (and has done for many a year).

How cynical can you people be?

For Christ's sake there's a reason why they are still nuber one in Melbourne for the footy call and that's becuase their the best.

Despite what others might say, AW can still attract the best in Dennis Cometti and Buckley.

It saves listeners from hearing the crap that MMM rav on about: "oh the dukes" and "spug reeeegus"

that my friends is crap

Paying the best is always one good way of attractiing the best talent.

I often hear him delay a response as he obviously looks for an answer to be put up on the screen by his producers.

Bucks was actually first attracted to SEN before the pensioners decided to bring the cheque book out

Didn't Sigley sack Ford after some Nicole Kidman story ?
I think Sigley thought that it was wrong to talk about her personal life, then he goes on to hire that camp bloke Bennett who did nothing but talk about celebs personal lives.

Yep.

He has a personal assistant and two producers and all three work extremely hard to cover up his unwillingness to prepare.

Still i don't really blame him to be honest, he's 70, got plenty of coin and seems to have a job for life.
If i was in that position i'd do a half-arsed job too.

They had a few run-ins, often about that issue, and yes, that Craig Bennett bloke was both as camp as a row of tents and did far more 'personal' stories than Peter Ford ever did.

Peter Ford's segment with Ross & John in the mornings is a cracker, and far more interesting that anything that Sigley did with Bennett (or that Tommy Garrett guy).

I love how this post is over 10 years old, but still applies.
