Footy clubs are steeped in history - jumper numbers are critical ties that bind the past and the present. You sit at a locker with the previous wearers of that number staring you in the face, like you are a torch bearer.

our most famous number?

hard to knock the number 5...

10 and 3 probably have claims but the 5 of Daniher and Hird takes some beating.

Stants has worn it 250 times but you'd have to guess his rein is coming to an end - does anyone have any opinins on who deserves to next take the famous #5? its only been word 3 times since the erly 80s i reckon, its a big deal.

I reckon Parish fits the 3 nice - like a little king Richard.
Zerret fits the 7 nice too, his partner in crime the little Hutchy.
Francis in the 10 fits nice too.

Dys the captain, 21 isnt a number i associate with a gun player or captain, could wear the 5 quite comfortably but i dont often see a captain change numbers mid rein.

any ideas for our next 5?

I think Stanton probably plays on next year. I don't think our next number five is at the club yet. Heppell wouldn't change this far into his career.

I think Hepp has worn 21 for too long to change it now. We all know it as Hepps number.

My pick is Langford or Laverde, depending on who puts their hand up first.

Or we can dangle it to one of the big names we're hopefully going after this/next offseason ie. Fyfe, Kelly, Dusty.

Didn't Stanton start with number 24? If not pretty sure it was in the mid 20s

They all start pretty high, hird was 49 I reckon... That's the key moment tho, getting given the 5 is like the club annointing you a club champion... You have served an apprenticeship and have proven your Worth

I thinks Stants has at least another year in him before retiring. In that time I believe Langford will emerge and be more than comfortable taking on the number.

Yes, the Parish/Reynolds connection is something I've thought about. Suits him to a T

You rarely see someone change from a single digit number to another single digit number. McGrath moving from 1 to 5 seems quite stupid and pointless. Give it to a big fish in josh kelly/fyfe/dusty when they don the sash next year

Yeah, it's 'only' a number, but such a historical number still changes the level of expectation amongst supporters, rightly or otherwise.

For that reason, I like the idea of giving it to a player who has been at the club a while and started to show something, rather than giving the 5 to a kid straight from the draft.
