The 80s holds a lot more nostalgia for me than the 90s. New Wave music. As an Essendon and Canterbury fan the 80s were an awesome decade of sport for me. Seeing both teams win back to back in 84-85 (Doggies also won in 80 and 88) was the pinnacle of my sporting fandom which probably won't be reached again. Movies like The Goonies, ET, Gremlins, Never Ending Story, The Indiana Jones movies, the Nightmare on Elm St movies. I hate today's technology. Yes, I realise the irony of posting this on an internet forum but life was so much simpler in the 80s without the technology we have today.

And legit could not get that haunting opening theme out of my head for about a week.

I agree. I wish mobile phones had stopped at "texting and calls" tbh. Hate all this selfie fb/insta bullshit.

Apart from Britpop.
House music too. I know you're an Oasis fan but I listened to WTSMG and it's dated horribly. A Different Class is era defining for me, sorted for e's and whiz was mapping your weekend out.

Going to arcades in the 80s and playing games like Space Invaders, Moon Patrol, Galaga, 1942 and Arkanoid is also a major part of my 80s nostalgia.

Personally it was a decade spent bringing up children, my 2 kids were born in 85 and 87, loved it.

There was also a dalliance with pub ownership in the first half of the 90s, in hindsight not the smartest thing to do with 2 young children in tow.

FWIW I was born in 85 and my parents owned pubs in the late 80s to mid 90s and I'll never forget growing up around them. I only wish he didn't get out of it when he did in 95/96 when I was still far too young.

From a quick google, major news events of the 90s:
1990- Mandela released from prison
1992- Barcelona Olympics
1993- Clinton becomes Prez
1995- Oklahoma bombing + OJ Found not guilty
1996- Port Arthur
1997- Princess Diana dies

And Geelong ******* loses. Alot.

I remember watching mandelas release live. in teh UK.
Another memorable event for me personally was the fall of the berlin wall. I was living in the UK then, and a classmate brought me back a piece of it after a holiday to the area. Couldve been from the front garden for all i know. But it was in 89 so not relevant.

How about the Wako siege?
And the Gulf war. Good times

The Big Steal was a classic Australian film from the early 90s.

A young Ben Mendelsohn, Claudia Karvan and Steve Bisley.

Went to a Mad Max Q and A with Steve Bisley and he complained about always being typecast as a cop but he always wears the cop shades,

He wore them at the Q and A and he wears them in that film as well.

Went through the NIDA school at the same time as Mel Gibson and Judy Davis.

Interesting character.

mmmmm claudia karvan

That game was for the simpletons.

Any real basketball person was busy playing NBA Live 95.

edit - I'll never forget one of my mates hitting a half court 3 pointer with Shaq - fading away. Odds of that going in must have been like 1000 to 1.

But in terms of arcade games, NBA Jam was where it was at.

I agree. I wish mobile phones had stopped at "texting and calls" tbh. Hate all this selfie fb/insta bulls**t.

I have an iPhone but I mostly just use it for phone calls and texts, a lot of the other features on there I hardly ever use.

My almost 3 year old nephew is already an expert at using iPhones and iPads and couldn't understand why he couldn't find youtube on my phone, my sister has it on her phone for playing videos for him when she needs to keep him occupied and I think he just assumes that he can do that with every phone.

House music too. I know you're an Oasis fan but I listened to WTSMG and it's dated horribly. A Different Class is era defining for me, sorted for e's and whiz was mapping your weekend out.

There was that big rivalry between Oasis and Blur back then, I was more of an Oasis fan at the time but Blur have probably aged better than Oasis.

I was never much of a fan of Pulp though, Jarvis Cocker seemed like a pretentious tosser.

The 90s was also a time you felt proud to hold a British passport and you didn't feel like the world was laughing at you every time you pulled it out.

The English cricket team were pretty laughable back in the 90s, the Ashes series back then were so one sided in favour of Australia that it just got boring.

Was very hard to find a Pom that even wanted to talk about cricket back then.

Most of my cricket highlights of the 90s were based around one dayers. Michael Bevan hitting Roger Harper back down the ground for 4 to beat the Windies, South Africa bottling the semi in the 99 WC, Australia A knocking off Australia and making the selectors panic. There were great test moments also but the 90s was the peak of ODI cricket.

At least the West Indies were still strong for the first half of the 90s, they played in few great test series against Australia both here and over there.

From memory Ch9 showed both the 1991 and 1995 test series in the West Indies, not something they've done since, now they just show The Ashes.

People go all nostalgic over sports coverage in the 90s but it was mostly pretty shit. The only advantage was that it was all free. West Coast playing at 5.30pm in Melbourne? Yeah you can watch that at 8.30pm because Today Tonight and Better Homes and Gardens take precedence. Used to go to Eagles home games on Sunday afternoon that were on at 2pm and the TV coverage wouldn't start until 4.30. Go to the game, drive home and then the news and second half would be on. Cricket wasn't much better. You'd get a good run with test matches in Melbourne and Sydney running roughly 7am-3pm but a WACA test they would only show the last session.

Even though we got the internet in the 2nd half of the 90s, streaming games wasn't an option when you were just relying on dial up speeds. One of the things I missed when I was living overseas in the late 90s and early 2000s was not being able to watch any footy games, the only games you got a chance to see live were grand finals that were shown at an Aussie themed pub somewhere. These days it wouldn't be an issue as you can just stream any games you want to watch.

Depends on the sport. Lifesaving Ironman and arguably Triathlon had muuuuch better coverage back then. The australian golf calendar also seemed to get better support.

Guys like Trevor Hendy, Guy Leech and Grant Kenny were household names back in those days, I wouldn't know the names of any current day Ironmen,

In the 90s you couldn't even get live stats, forget about streaming.

No fantasy football games like Supercoach or Dream Team back then either, I remember back in the 90s they had something similar where you picked players using the phone and then the scores would be published a day or two later in the paper. I tried it once but it was just too much hard work to bother with for long.

The 90s was great. Being born in 88, I grew up in the 90s.

A simpler time. People went outside, riding bikes with friends, or kicking the ball around with friends. All the cool kids game shows on TV after school, and some brilliant cartoons in the mornings.

Primary school was fun and it was nice knowing the biggest problem I had was how much homework I'd get that day.
