OJ Simpson craziness and Pincess Di death, were crazy times. I not even sure the Berlin Wall coming down was covered as much.

Probably 1960s when president Kennedy shot and Malcolm X stuff going on, was crazier decade in terms of what the media would have covered.
When was Malcolm X movie made ? 1990's. should watch it again.

There was also the Bill Clinton impeachment saga of which we are currently being subjected to all over again with Trump.....The media circus distraction has a 30 year cycle it would appear.

That OJ scandal was huge back in the 90s, it was big news in Australia but even bigger in the States where they had live coverage of the car chase and then they had live coverage of the courtroom and then there was all the controversy of the not guilty verdict, hard to believe he got acquitted.

People think the Epstein/Prince Andrew scandal is big now but it is nothing compared to what the OJ scandal was like back in the 90s.

Weekend Update with Norm lasted a few years and it was a lot edgier than anything SNL had done on Weekend Update before or since, Norm got one of the best writers at SNL on his side in Jim Downey and they separated themselves from the rest of SNL and wrote Weekend Update together where it used to be a group effort.

They went to town with Michael Jackson paedophile jokes too. Lorne Michaels let them get away with it as it was one of the most popular segments on SNL but the higher ups at NBC weren't happy with it, they were ruffling too many feathers and it wasn't safe enough comedy for mainstream television.

Norm went on Letterman just after he got axed which is a revealing interview, Letterman was a fan of Norm and vice versa and Dave wasn't happy to hear that Norm got sacked by NBC. Keep in mind Letterman had been overlooked for the NBC Tonight Show gig in favour of Leno after Carson retired as Leno was seen as a safer comedian than Letterman so he had an axe to grind with NBC too and Letterman was a lot like Norm, neither gave a f*** who they offended as long as it was funny.

Marcia Clark's book called Without A Doubt is great if you're into OJ stuff.

That shit seemed minor compared to the OJ circus of the time.

however still makes me laugh to this day " I did not have sexual relations with that woman.."

The Rodney King riots in L/A in the early 90's, were also pretty big....A fore-runner as to why O.J got off.

Oliver Stone's JFK came out in 1991, probably got as close to the truth as any American film, went for about 3 hours but was gripping the whole way.

What a cast, Kevin Costner, Gary Oldman, Joe Pesci, Tommy Lee Jones, Kevin Bacon, Donald Sutherland, Jack Lemmon, Ed Asner, Walter Matthau.

It was a who's who of acting talent at the time and from the past, even John Candy played a cameo in it in one of his few serious roles.

One of the most underrated 90s films.

1989 was a trip. Berlin Wall fell, Tianamenn Square, Sudanese fundy Islam coup, Botha met Mandela for the first time and the group areas act was abolished, Soviets withdrew from Afghanistan, first leadership spill against Thatcher *spits*, it shaped the next 20 years.

You missed the biggest event of them all that happened that year….The Hawks went Back to Back for the first time, in the most epic Grand final of them all.

I was in high school and oblivious to history back then, I remember one of our teachers trying to tell us about how Tiananmen Square was a big deal.

We were like yeah whatever.

I was too busy getting into REM, they exploded here in 1989 with Green.

That was back when REM were still cool, then they sold out in the 90s with Out of Time and Automatic for the People with songs your mother would like.

Back on topic.

Jim Breuer was another underrated 90s SNL cast member.

Most famous for Goat Boy.

And his Joe Pesci impression on The Joe Pesci Show.

Jim Breuer said he met the real Joe Pesci backstage one time and he wasn't too impressed with his impression and how he made him look like a psycho.

He didn't last too long on SNL after that, Pesci probably got him whacked.

Good movie but overrated, big time.
Malcolm X movie was far more interesting but less stellar cast of names.

Denzel Washington is a great actor but I thought he was better 20 years later in Flight playing an alcoholic pilot that went from hero to zero.

He got nominated for Best Actor in Malcolm X and Flight but ended up winning his Best Actor Oscar for Training Day where he dialed it in as an action hero.

Kevin Spacey was another great actor from the 90s, The Usual Suspects, Seven and American Beauty.

He also did a great Pacino impression on The Joe Pesci Show.

Whatever happened to him? He seemed to drop off the radar all of a sudden.

He grew up in the 90's.....a veritable cultural desert...He's got no real point of reference by which to set anchor upon.;)

Could have been worse, I could have grown up in the 70s, I've watched some of those vintage 70s SNL clips and most of them are awful.

Chevy Chase was the funniest one out of the lot and he had the good sense to bail after the first season and head to Hollywood.

Belushi and Aykroyd weren't that funny on SNL in the 70s, they were great in The Blues Brothers but were awful otherwise, have you seen Neighbors?

The only other genuinely funny SNL cast member from the 70s was Bill Murray who replaced Chevy Chase and he bailed to Hollywood soon after too.

The best ever comedy film imo was Caddyshack with Chevy Chase, Bill Murray and Rodney Dangerfield, that came out in the 80s though. 1980.

Not much of Yank Tv over here in Oz in the 70's mate......Mostly British BBC stuff on Aunty....and the guff we did get from the Septics back in those days was usually a good 4-5 years old.....Think The Brady Bunch, Lost In Space etc.....Wasn't until around the mid to late 70's that more contemporary stuff started to run, like the 6 Million Dollar Man & Charlies Angels for instance.

As far as Comedy went, it was Benny Hill, Alf Garnett, Steptoe & Son & The Paul Hogan shoq.

Chevy Chase is funny ? FMD

You must have missed the 80s where Chevy Chase dominated with the National Lampoon's Vacation films, Fletch and Funny Farm.

He's not that funny these days but in the 80s he was comedy gold.

So why was he put in so many comedy films in the 80s? He was in Spies Like Us and the Three Amigos which are classic 80s comedies.

Chevy Chase was the Will Ferrell of the 80s, he was the bumbling idiot man-child that could make the weakest comedies funny just by his presence.

I can't believe I'm being dragged into the 80s in my 90s thread, this is insane.

I guess you don't find Bill Murray funny either, like Chevy he produced some 80s comedy classics like Stripes, Ghostbusters and Scrooged.

Unlike Chevy he also produced some 90s comedy classics like What About Bob and Groundhog Day.

They are probably not up to your high comedy standards either though.

Bill was good in Lost in Translation....lol

Now that's something we can agree on, great film, unless you're being sarcastic then f*** you.
