Whilst I also find Hollywood's back-slapping irritating, the actual awards aren't the problem.

The comments along the lines of "for films nobody's heard of" are pretty wide of the mark, too - I would've thought any semi serious film watcher would've seen or heard of all best film nominees.

Or made the effort to find them since Noms were announced.
I would have missed Sound of Metal and PYW but because they were noms I watched and thought they were both fantastic

Criticising and industry for having awards that congratulate themselves is very odd; there aren't many industries where this doesn't happen.
