UN still waiting for Israeli apology

The United Nations is still waiting for Israel to apologise for an erroneous allegation that Palestinians used a UN ambulance to transport a rocket.

The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), an aid agency active in the West Bank and Gaza, had hoped for "a fresh start" in long-strained relations with Israel after the charge was found to have no basis.

"I asked for an apology. I never got one, and I am still waiting for one, although not with bated breath," said UNRWA Commissioner-General Peter Hansen on Monday.

His comments came while he spoke to reporters during a visit to New York to address the 191-nation UN General Assembly.

Criticism continued

But instead of apologising, Israeli officials had quickly resumed criticising the agency behind its back, Hansen said.

"I asked for an apology. I never got one, and I am still waiting for one, although not with bated breath"

Peter Hansen,
UNRWA commissioner-general

The initial Israeli accusation, based on blurry black-and-white video footage filmed by an Israeli military drone, was made in early October as Israeli forces carried out an invasion in Gaza against Palestinian rocket attacks targeting Israeli settlements and border towns.

Hansen at the time said the allegation endangered UNRWA staff working in the Palestinian territories by encouraging Israeli troops to think UN vehicles were "transporting terrorists and weapons".

Stretcher, not rocket

A UN investigation concluded that the object identified by Israel as a Palestinian Qassam rocket was in fact a stretcher, a finding Israel did not dispute.

But within days, he heard from other governments - which he did not identify - that the Israeli government was making the rounds with a private briefing spelling out 29 additional
allegations of UNRWA wrongdoing, he said.

UNRWA had responses to all 29 allegations but had never been informed of the charges directly by Israel, he said.

The recent incidents were only the latest in dozens of cases in which Israel levelled charges against his agency that ultimately were found to be without foundation, he said.

Yes, and strangely enough, those 'beacons of democracy' Israel and the US are the very ones who never bother to listen!

Another one of your 'opinions' no doubt.

Funny how these opinions of yours were derived after Bush made the famous speech regarding the UN.

Before that...I bet you were pro-UN, just like the rest of the followers!

And the fact of the matter is that Israel has made a false accusation....one of many!

Lestat, if you're going to talk about the UN, why don't you cut and paste articles which show how Palestinian terrorists contravene the Geneva Convention by hiding among civilian populations.

And by the way, Israel's still waiting for an apology over the Hizballah kidnapping incident, where three Israeli soldiers (one who was an Arab) were kidnapped in 2000 and then killed, having been aided by Indian UN peacekeepers who were bribed by the terrorists and turned a blind eye. Annan even knew about it himself but refused to admit it for a long time.
But I don't see any apology for that, so maybe when the useless, hypocritical organisation that is the UN actually does something, anything to warrant giving it credibility and respect, maybe then Israel and the USA will take it seriously.

At the moment, the UN is a useless organisation that like its predecessor the League of Nations is all talk and no action. Just a vehicle for 57 Muslim nations to do a bit of Israel and US-bashing.

funny how the UN was used as a justification for invading iraq, yet when it makes decrees that are against the opinion of the US, then the UN is obsolete.

make up your minds donkey boy.

You must be mistaking me for somebody else.

I supported the war in Iraq because it was the right thing to do, not because the UN decided one way or another whether it should go ahead.

The UN is useless and I think the fact that it is still in existence symbolises how ****** up the world is.

Essentially, it is a group of nations each looking to serve their own incredibly selfish self-interests. The balance of power in the General Assembly rests with the 57 Muslim members and their third-world counterparts, and for this reason they waste half their time blindly condemning Israel for absolutely every single reason no matter how absurd that they can possible think of.

In the Security Council, you have five nations who unfairly think they're more important than everybody else. If you're going by population I can understand China and the US having veto power but how France with 60 million people managed to get it is beyond me. Having said that, any institution that gives ANY country, US, France or whoever, the right to veto decision is not a democratic institution.

The UN serves 2 purposes. It is a forum for the majority of Muslim nations (a few of them don't join in) to engage in their hatred of Israel and it is a forum for delegates to attend pointless conferences where they then decide to convene again for another conference. In fact, this cartoon sums up the irrelevance of the UN. For those that hate the US more than Iran, please look past the politics of this cartoon. Rather, look at what it says about the power of the UN.

The Iraq debacle at the UN has only proved what all intelligent observers already knew - that multilateralism doesn't work and that international law is a load of **** because states will do what they want if they really want to do it, and won't let an organisation with no power whatsoever stop them.

Dan Warna (& Lestat), you're entitled to your opinions about Israel, however misguided you might be. But argue based on your findings, because if you believe the UN is at all a credible source for your attacks on Israel, you are only hurting your own argument.
