New Alice Springs alcohol restrictions after Albanese’s crime wave crisis talks​

Alcohol sales will be subject to immediate curbs across the Northern Territory in a step towards more sweeping bans within a week, after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese flew to Alice Springs to respond to a surge in violence ravaging Indigenous communities.

The prime minister shelved the prospect of federal police being sent in as he outlined the urgent changes alongside Northern Territory Chief Minister Natasha Fyles late on Tuesday, just hours after she had played down the prospect of imposing new alcohol bans.

The crisis meeting followed mounting calls from community leaders and the federal opposition for the prime minister to visit the town to confront the crisis.
The Howard government enacted widespread alcohol bans as part of its Northern Territory intervention in 2007. These rules were replaced by Labor’s 2012 Stronger Futures laws, which maintained bans and increased penalties.
Despite protests from some Indigenous community groups and leaders, the Stronger Futures law was allowed to expire in July. Alcohol-driven crime has risen dramatically in the Territory as liquor became legal in some areas for the first time in 15 years.
The Central Australian Aboriginal Congress wrote to Burney about violence and alcohol on June 9, shortly after the minister was sworn in, and several other Indigenous groups have been calling for bans ever since.

Northern Territory police commissioner Jamie Chalker said the lifting of decade-old alcohol bans last July directly contributed to the surge in violent crime in Alice Springs. He also warned that lifting other restrictions - such as income management - could spur a further spike in alcohol-related crime.

Local statistics show property damage rose 60 per cent in the year to November 2022, assault rose by 43 per cent, domestic violence-related assault rose by 53 per cent, and commercial break-ins by 55 per cent.

While the Chief Minister earlier on Tuesday ruled out a return to what she labelled race-based policies that discriminated against Aboriginal communities, her Attorney-General Chansey Paech also backed the return of the bans.

“It’s okay that we got it wrong,” he told Sky News.

A Milwaukee County judge Thursday raised the bond for a man accused in a December standoff that was captured on cellphone video going on a profanity-laced rant inside a Shorewood restaurant.

“According to a criminal complaint, neighbors told police Connelly was in the hallway of an apartment on North Murray Avenue on Dec. 11 yelling about shooting females.

"He threatened everybody in the building so they evacuated all of us," a neighbor who didn't want to be identified said that day.

When officers arrived, Connelly was holed up in his apartment claiming he had an AR style rifle pointed at the door, the complaint said.

"The defendant continued to yell about two females who he stated had drugged him and allowed 7,000 homosexuals (to) rape him; he wanted his revenge," prosecutors wrote in the complaint. "He would kill all those involved with a machine gun and Liberals that were judging him.

The defendant believed they (the police) were there to assault him and he would defend himself."end quote/

That's a big waste of effort, perhaps you should have asked before wasting all that time. I absolutely agree 100% that it should be for all. I cannot understand after how after it's successful rollout in the NT it wasn't rolled out throughout all of Australia.

In terms of alcohol restrictions, had you read my recent posts, you'd realise that I'm not actually strong on that as a solution. I don't think it makes any difference because the habitual drunks spend until they're out of money. Reduced opening times and other supply limits don't change that simple reality. Another post of mine identified a negative aspect to not selling takeaway till 2pm, being that the trouble is delayed to align with the hours of darkness. You can speak to the police officers that patrolled pre and post that change if you want clarification.

But, definitely, there should absolutely be a cashless debit component rolled across the entire country. It's a national disgrace that it's not already in place. And to go backwards from the right policy in the regions of greatest need should be met with criminal penalties.

exactly as I was posting last night. I saw the mayor interviewed and he said, 'I'm not sure what happened, i thought we went in there to discuss 2 major issues facing this town and very early it morphed into a discussion only about alcohol'.

We were 3 or 4 times, car stolen once. Our rear fence backed onto the macdonnell ranges across from the casino, so they had pretty easy access. After we put motion sensing and screamer out the back we had 2-3 more attempts but then it stopped for us. Was a bit funny watching them climb over the fence and stealthily make their way to a back door. They be detected about 5m away and would just about be back over the fence before the sound got there.
