I'd probably scratch my forehead with my middle finger. Something subtle or maybe even put the finger and thumb together in a circle below my shorts to see if anyone takes the bait.

It's important not to get too carried away with the emotional stuff, I read and watched the Power of One and when Morgan Freeman in the movie is all like, "first with the head, and then with the heart", he should have added, "...then with the head again"

To give an example of this, get your binoculars out and train them on the Collingwood huddle at 3/4 time in the 2011 AFL Grand Final, 2:27.06 in the video link below. This is IMO where Collingwood lost the GF, too much "do it for Mick" but not much direction as to how to do it for Mick.

Whereas in the Geelong huddle in comparison, not shown in the video below, but fortunately I had a microphone in there that afternoon, they were all like, "Step 1) get the ball Step 2) kick the ball long and hard into the forward 50 Step 3) Tom Hawkins will mark the ball".

So when the video goes forward about ten seconds this sequence of events plays out, and then about two minutes later again.

To be honest I thought it was desrepectfull and not a good look.Hands on there waist that's a poor look and using it to imtimate including the coach wasn't great. When the national anthem is on should be respected in appropriate manner.See it sometimes to often in afl more in the past now..

So 20 years ago, both teams would just stand there.

Then some teams started to link arms... "OMG WOWEE THEY ARE LINKING ARMS THIS IS REVOLUTIONARY AND SO GREAT LIKE BROTHERS IN ARMS AT WAR GOING INTO BATTLE SHEESH BAZINGAH"

Now every team link arms before anthems and one team decides to unlink arms and its now like "OMG WOWEE THEY ARE JUST STANDING THERE ITS BLOODY INTIMIDATING AND BRUTAL THIS IS THE MODERN DAY HAKA OMG THIS IS TRULY BATTLE WORTH STUFF LIKE A REAL WAR BOMBS AND LAND MINES IN THE G TYPE STUFF"

give me a ******* break pal
Could not have been put any better.

The 'stance' is interesting but not nearly as intimidating as things can become for players visiting Adelaide. Was listening to SEN today and heard from the Ox that Russell Robinson was whacked across the back of the head by an old lady with an umbrella as he was leaving the ground after a Adelaide Melbourne game in the city of churches. He snatched the umbrella but it was the least of his worries ... when he got to the car park 2 tyres were missing from his car and all his windows were broken ...

Collingwood used to leave the visitors with cold showers but Adelaide sure knows how to make the visitor feel welcome ^^

Didn't they do it to their own team player once? If I remember correctly a former Vic player changed clubs to Adelaide but their car still had a Vic license plate, from memory his car was vandalised

I played in a fairly successful side when I played (at a low level), and we would always do this.

There's nothing disrespectful about it.

We always felt that linking arms was meaningless. If anything, it was an internal signal that you were hoping your mate was going to cover for you on the field.

Not linking arms was a sign that you as an individual were prepared to go out and get everything done yourself, and that the team would ultimately benefit from that.

We had a tight group and trusted each other in big games so always decided that not linking arms was better and it also created the potential for the opposition players to feel inferior or at least make them think about it.

All smoke and mirrors in the end but it used to work for us and it worked for the crows.
