I believe players are rated by the last 40 games, walker being injured would have a lot of zeros in there, 40 games after his injury, you will see his real ranking.
Not just that - games over 31 decrease by 10% of value per game.
Eg game 32 only worth 90% of its value. Game 40 only worth 10%

Not sure if we want or need this, but seeing as I'm the self proclaimed Statman, I decided to do it anyway. I'll update our stats every week.

Some interesting team stats;
  • 1.7:1 kick/handball ratio easily highest in AFL
  • Drop down to 15th in disp eff after the wet on Saturday
  • Jumped from 16th to 3rd in hitouts in one week. Lots of stoppages
  • 12 rushed behinds already in three games, perhaps suggests our f50 entries aren't too great.

I believe players are rated by the last 40 games, walker being injured would have a lot of zeros in there, 40 games after his injury, you will see his real ranking.

"And the Official AFL Player Ratings are based on a player's past 40 games, which delivers a long-term view of a player's standing within the AFL."

I read that to mean that they are based on the last 40 games they have played. I don't think a missed game is zero. If a player misses a game their rating stays the same and others move up or down around him based on their performances.

Tex has had 2 games where his rating score was poor. One negative and one really low. These off games significantly affect his overall score.

Good thread. Keep it coming.

Any chance of a 'ground ball' stat? ;)
And the 'transition' stat that Walshy does his calendar around? I must to using a combined stat of i50 + r50's when picking some players for the offseason draft game. I love types who have a high combined total for my HBF's, wingers (and to a lesser degree mids and HFFs). I was super pumped to hear Walshy talk about it as the two ladders on his desk. (Admittedly my data and the easy data you can pull together doesn't show the r50's that lead to i50's... not sure you could get your hands on that without a club based subscription to champion data!)

I believe it was ground ball + loose ball in the article, but I highlighted in another thread how misleading it was and wasn't a true sign of success, anyway through four rounds you rank 10th for differential for these two at +7, Collingwood lead with +54, Essendon last at -69

transition stat/speed, you've moved the ball from defensive 50 to your forward 50 31/149 times (20.8%) that is 9th best conversion but you're doing it the 5th fastest, you are 5th on the defensive side at 17.9%

It is within a two year window or something though. So time off will impact after a certain number of games. As it should.
I'll have to double check but its their last 40 games in a 2 year rolling window or something. As I've said elsewhere.. games 31 to 40 also reduce their contribution to overall rating score by 10% per game. Game 40 only contributes 10% of its actual value to the total which means the more recent the game is the more relevant its going to be.

Cheers mate - i assume you mean its loose ball + hard ball?

On the AFL player ratings...

A player's rating is determined by aggregating his points tally based on a rolling window of the previous two seasons. For example, after round six of the 2014 season, a player's rating will be based on matches from round seven of the 2012 season onwards. However, only a player's most recent 40 matches are used in the calculation of his rating. This creates a buffer for players missing matches through injury, suspension, omission or by not being involved in finals. A player's most recent 20 matches are given greater weight in determining his rating. Matches 21 through 40 are progressively reduced in weighting, from 100 per cent down to five per cent for the earliest game in the window.

I'm 99% sure they've changed that. I reckon used to be 31 to 40 on a 10% taper per game. Not 21 to 40 on a 5% taper.

So if we look at Tex. Currently 349th best player in the comp. Using the above guideline only games from round 5 of 2013 onwards would be captured in the rolling window of the past two seasons. His eligible games from that are:
2013 - rd5. When he did his knee (earlyish in the game as well).
2014 - rd9-23. 15 games.
2015 - rd1-4. Another 4 games.

So at present he's only got 20 games out of 40 to count towards his score of 207.3. Sure they start tapering off from game 21 onwards..
Games 21 to 40 are worth 10.5 games once you factor in the tapering off.
Assuming he performs at a consistent level going forward making up those extra games would put his 'score' at 316 and change.
Putting him just better than Pods as a KPF... and fractionally worse off than Tippett.
(Puts him about 200+ competition wide).

Clearly we'd expect better performance than the games in the mix for what he is currently rated on - but will be interesting to see by how much!

Assuming he performs at a consistent level going forward making up those extra games would put his 'score' at 316 and change.
Also worth remembering it takes a year to regain confidence and get back to 100%. His 'score' will be effected for the next 2 years at least, IMO.
