So ground ball is loose ball and ground ball? Think you're confusing yourself.

you are right, not sure why I've been thinking that
ground ball differential numbers are the following then

Team GBG
Collingwood 30
Sydney Swans 28
Melbourne 23
Carlton 21
GWS Giants 20
Western Bulldogs 17
St Kilda 8
North Melbourne 0
Fremantle -1
Adelaide Crows -2
West Coast Eagles -3
Hawthorn -4
Port Adelaide -8
Gold Coast Suns -9
Richmond -21
Geelong Cats -21
Brisbane Lions -33
Essendon -45

Ahead of the Showdown, here's an interesting one comparing our list with our cross-town rivals, who appear closer to the cup than us:

Round 1 av age 24y 322d tot games 1715.

Round 2 av age 24y 320d tot. Games 1728.

Round 3 av age 25y 35d tot. Games 1956

Round 4 av age 25y 71d tot games 1991.

The round 1 & 2 teams were quite inexperienced. Thommo comes in, the av age only goes up a litte but tot games increases markedly.

The Bulldogs were very inexperienced. Played well beyond their years. If they maintain that all year and beyond they are going to be scary good over the next few years.

Hawthorn in rnd 4 fielded a team of 2842 games exp. Freo 2849. Syds 2621. Norf 2580

This is brilliant. Well played.

Although I must disagree with the Mackay one. Has more contested possessions per game than Cheney, Wright, Jaensch, Brown, Walker, Talia. Henderson/Lynch only average on more per game and Laird 2 more per game.

What metric would you suggest for Mackay?

Correct, dmac's contested game is not a problem, the problem is we have more than enough of them, he needs to increase his outside work, maybe not so much this year if washy is playing him back.

He's a hard player to judge, though this year I've noticed he's down on inside 50s (7 total, 1.75 per game, down from 3.26 last year) but up on rebound 50s (3.25 p/g, up from 1.58 last year).

He's also down in contested possessions, somewhat flat in uncontested possessions, flat in tackles, down in disposals, and has a better kick to handball ratio

Playing down back vs wing explains the i50's and o50's and overall disposals.

Okay so the average disposals for an Adelaide midfielder last year (and I included players like Wright, Henderson, Smith, Jaensch, Laird and Mackay), per game, was 20 disposals if they weren't the sub. Mackay's average was 18 disposals.

So his metric will be whether he has a below average (18 disposal) game. And many people believe his average is the bare minimum (or really not enough for him)

Oh and there should also be the Lyons-Grigg Trophy for the most amount of appearances as the sub this year, compared to games in the starting 21.

Player|Games as Sub|Games on Field
\Jarryd Lyons|2|0
\Mitch Grigg|1|0

OP UPDATED POST RD 5
Some interesting team stats;
  • 69.5% DE is ranked 16th in the league, yet we keep our opponents to 68.9% DE, ranked 4th.
  • What's in a rushed behind? I discussed with someone in this thread earlier this year. First three weeks we won, and had a total of 12 rushed behinds at an average of 4 per game. Last two weeks we've had a total of 1 rushed. What is different about our style this last fortnight that is causing less rushed behinds?
Some interesting player stats;
  • We had 9 players dispose above 80% efficiency on Sunday. Didn't appear so effective while watching.
  • After we worked out the error with minutes played last week, all the major sites have been updated. People power works after all.
  • Scott 'Guns' Thompson is an interesting case regarding minutes played being our only midfielder ranked in our clubs top 10 time on ground averaging 84.7% game time. The rest of the top 10 are forwards and defenders.
  • Dangerfield has overtaken Sloane as our highest grossing dreamteam scorer. PD has been overtaken by Nat Fyfe in the AFL player ratings, and is less than 1 point behind RS.

After looking through our efficiency stats, Im a little relieved that we keep our opponents to worse efficiency than we are running at, because ours looks terrible.

Here are some individual stats.

Our biggest offenders for clangers per game

Danger 4.0 from 25 diposals/game
Dougey 3.6 from 22.4
Tex 3.4 from 14.4
Smith 3.2 from 21
Thommo 3.00 from 31.7

And least per game
Brown 1.0 from 10.8
Sauce 1.2 from 13.6
Betts 1.4 from 16.2
VB 1.6 from 13.2

HARTIGAN, as the clanger whipping boy comes in at equal 8th least for the team at 1.8 from 15 diposals per game. As a percentage of disposal, still around the average in our team. Not too bad for a 14 game player.

More interesting. Disposal efficiency .

Adelaides Worst- all are forwards
Cameron 54.8% from 7.8 per game
Wright 56.4% from 9.6 per game
Danger 57.6% from 25 per game
Tex 58.4% from14.4 per game
Lynch 60.4% from 19.2 per game
Betts 65.4% from 16.2 per game

Adelaides Best - all are defenders
Cheyney 87.5% from 13.3 per game
Kelly 81.8% from 11.0 per game
Brown 81.5% from 10.8 per game
Laird 80.4% from 19.4 per game
Talia 79.4% from 13.6 per game

HARTIGAN comes in at 10th best with 73.3% while Smith is at 66.7 %

A couple of interesting things from this.

Our defenders are bringing the ball out well
Hartigan is copping more flack than deserved on here.
Cheyney is topping the list, good pickup.

Our forwards are really struggling, and not handling defensive pressure.
Danger is having a shocker, as is Tex & Lynch.
Wright not cutting it, and hasnt for a while
Camerons ball use highly overrated

Thommo makes a few mistakes but still producing the goods with 68.4% efficiency(among our better midfielders for efficiency) despite copping flack.
Thommo is also laying the most tackles, getting highest clearances, contested possessions, disposals per game for us

Smiths disposal efficiency has dropped badly.

A very good Thread Danoz....cheers.

I've highlighted (what I think) are the most important stats for us.
In simple terms, these stats indicate that we're good in the Clinches, but seriously lack outside class. When you rank near the bottom in Uncontested Possession, that means you're not able to run into space and take uncontested marks and handball-receives. And we can't kick - both at goal and and around the paddock. And this brings me to another point - our proposed self-imposed alcohol ban. Make no mistake about it, cutting back on the turps (partially or entirely) will make a difference to on-field performance, but exactly how much difference is debatable. But whether or not our players drink pales in comparison to our woeful list management since Neil Craig's final years. Under Neil Craig's tenure, we were always touted as being one of the fittest teams, if not the fittest, in the AFL. But aside from Dangermouse and Betts, we really don't have anyone with true leg speed through the Middle. And only Danger plays in the middle, but has a horrendous kick. What we do have is a huge assortment of inside accumulators that are next to useless out in the open.
The problem is, we've had this problem of a lack of genuine Midfield pace for years one end. And I'm of the opinion that this recent talk of speed of ball movement, self-imposed alcohol bans (just to name a few points) is just a smoke-and-mirrors attempt to divert attention away from the fact that our list management for the last several years has been way below par. We only need to look at where we've been finishing on the Ladder.

The bottom line is, our Mids-Wingers-Flankers-Pockets need a serious injection of genuine pace....who have elite kicking skills. I couldn't care if they're a bit "soft" or "selfish" - we need blokes that can get on the bike and burn their opponents (or catch them when chasing). Forget about the beep test for the moment; look at pure sprint times. Danger is a sprinter, but he's improved his Engine out of site. I'm sick of us trying to squeeze more pace out of the likes of VB and Thompson. Not working.

Once we get this sorted out, then I'm more than happy to discuss locking the Esky in the garage for the season, but not before. You only need to look at the Stats that Danoz posted - numbers don't lie.

Couple of thinks I'm interested in:
- Wife and I had a night in a hotel Sat night followed by brunch. Picked up the Monday sales for the first time in years. I LOVE the score involvement and metres gained stats. Where can we reliably get them and include them here?
- we are currently 6th in the comp for goal kicking accuracy, surprised and pleased by this.
- third for goal assists. Not surprised but well pleased by this.
- 7th for tackles. Good. No longer a dramatic issue for us.
- 3rd also for goals kicked. In another thread some folk were disappointed in the functioning of our forward line. I don't think our forwardline is so much an issue. We kick enough goals.
- 2nd for inside 50's.. .okay maybe I should back off the last statement, bit more efficiency here would be good.
- 10th for 1%s. Would like to see this higher. Typically a stat picked up by spoiling...
- very low on R50's.. (equal 14th). I'm really keen to see Walshy's transition ladders on his desk. Not sure this is a problem. Obviously depends on ratio of what we let in to begin with...
- 2nd in clearances. 3rd in centeres and stoppages. Happy enough with this.
- 3rd in Marks inside 50m, 10th in contested marks. Again, forward line functioning pretty well -> but if we had a great contested marker.. could be a better.
- 3rd in marks overall. Indicates reasonable ball use and movement. Two sides above us are the benchmark - freo and hawks. A good 5%+ in front as well.
- 6th in clangers - should be looking to improve this. With the way we defend we can't afford too many turnovers.
- 14th in DE. Really need to lift this as well... again, turnovers will kill us with the way we press up.

Summary - if we can improve our ball use I think we'll see a solid improvement on what are already some good statistical indicators.
I think that low R50's is a result of high Clangers and low DE%. Whenever we give the ball up we are often pressed up and can get exposed over the back. Low 1%'s indicates we're probably not spoiling as much as other teams -> mostly because we are not creating as many scenarios opposition needs to kick long to a contest.
I like the press idea - for now (we've yet to see if sustainable for the season and finals footy). But if we're going to play it we MUST start using the ball better.

I think Eddie probably makes our forward line better than it is actually structured. Guy is AMAZING.
