Pretty shocked with this tbh.

The federal government has made a plea to people to not use extra fuel where possible. Of course there’s a lot of driving that’s pre-arranged or essential that people can’t avoid, but there are other things everybody can do to try to lower their use of fuel to try to conserve what we do have for important use.

As we saw during COVID with distancing measures, people are generally pretty good at doing the right thing. We’ll whinge about it a bit, but still, people do tend to pull together and do the right thing as much as they can.

Yet the very day after the government makes this plea… the AFL comes out and announces a deal for footy fans to save 10c per litre of fuel over Gather Round. To (and I quote) “make travel more accessible”??

With “thousands of footy fans planning to drive to Adelaide for Gather Round”.

What in god’s name? Actually encouraging people to drive straight after people have been asked to try not to? To go to the bloody footy?

Surely this hasn’t gone down well with the government? The AFL gets a hell if a lot of favours from them.

How can the AFL justify this blatant selfishness?

If they were truly concerned about this, why not offer full refunds on Gather Road tickets for those who would like to take it up? Why not subsidise cheap trains to Adelaide for travelling supporters? Get more services put on and cheap fares??

(Answer - because they don’t also get a financial kickback from Shell as they will be here)

Pretty alarming stuff… also alarming they’re not being called on it?

What do you want them to do?

Fans will have ordered tickets weeks or months before this fuel BS started so you're asking them to fork out for overpriced airline flights at the last minute, cram onto interstate trains at the last minute or not go at all. Unfair request.

Fans have every right to use the tickets they've purchased and get there however they see fit. The government can go **** themselves.

People still need to be able to live their lives. Gather Round was planned a long time ago, why should people cancel their plans because of political events on the other side of the planet?

I'd say it's wholly consistent with government's position.

All we've had so far is a 20c cut in petrol prices + "enjoy your Easter as you would normally, and maybe take the train to work next week."

Because a severe shortage of fuel is looking more and more likely and may need to be conserved for emergency use and supply chains.

If and when this becomes the case the onus will be on the Government to apply restrictions. At the moment, it's business as usual.

The AFL has announced a 10c discount at Shell Reddy petrol stations.

See the thing is, Viva Energy owns OTR in Adelaide and use those to distribute Shell petrol in SA. As part of buying out OTR, they had to sell off all their Coles Express/Shell Reddy stations. So there's only 3 Shell Reddy stations in Adelaide.

And they haven't accepted any other Shell Reddy things at OTR stations (like Coles petrol vouchers).

Wouldn't the effect on prices in Adelaide itself be on the lower end of priorities within the context of Gather Round?
As much as I can sympathise that Adelaide residents have the same cost pressures as everyone else the purpose of GR is to congregate the AFL community in one place for a super weekend of footy and the concern will be getting fans from elsewhere hundred's or thousand's of KMs to and from Adelaide.

So the density of Shell Reddy sites in Vic, NSW, WA and in regional SA en route to Adelaide surely the main aim here.

No. The message from the government was: don't fill up jerry cans of petrol and stockpile them like the actual selfish people did with toilet paper.

The message was not to cancel plans that you made long before any hint of a supposed fuel crisis (but, again, there is no crisis if everybody just buys what they're going to use).

'As we saw during Covid'

All i saw was a massive cluster**** of arbitrary rules made on fear and populist politics.

I might drive down from Cairns just to spite the ****wits in Canberra. When I say ****wits, I mean every single one of the grifting campaigners too...

I'm driving my beefed up 4x4 which takes 16L/100 from Melbourne to Adelaide for gather round.
And just to spite the government i might take the scenic route via Darwin.

But seriously once again the population suffers because our incompetent government (not a dig at Labor or the Coalition, they are both as equally pathetic) can't plan or organise anything.
And here we go again wasting another year or more of our lives having to stay at home.
