News The AFL's $2.508 Billion Broadcasting Rights Deal: What it Means for Brisbane

So I wonder what the odds of us getting the extra FTA game on saturday are now? Will be nice to see a majority of the rounds games on telly, instead of a measly 4.
I'd say almost none.
Saturday games I think are the money spinners, so Fox is unlikely to sub-let a spare game to someone like 10 to directly compete.
A few times this year in Brisbane, we have got a fifth game on delay on Sunday afternoon.
As far as another network buying a game from Fox, I'd think only Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth would have the market to prompt someone like 10 to buy a Sunday game.

I wonder if that's a big deal these days though. To me, the concept of "main" channels is obsolete. I surf through channels using the up/down buttons and imagine many others would.
I just think the whole "main" v "alternate" channel is a thing of the past.

I think the difference between the main channel and mate would be a couple percent at most (especially given ratings are done based on average viewers across the time slot IIRC) - play like we have been most of the year and the extra 5% of people who forgot to change the channel will flick off mighty quickly.

The differences are surprisingly large. Unfortunately I can't find the reference for it but I recall reading an article indicating that TV programs drop significantly when shifted to the alternate channels, as do just general ratings overall. Obviously there's caveats to that, but the general view in the industry is that the alternate channels are still very limited in their ratings draw.

Hell, forget about that. What we need is (i) to stabilise the financial bleeding, and (ii) to get the extra funding to clear up the ourstanding debt.

The rest should then look after itself.

The bleeding is somewhat staunched if the rumour of us breaking even this year is true, and debt is really irrelevant. It's being guaranteed by the AFL. We really need to move on from austerity and get into the "spending money to make money" stage - new facilities and a bigger and better football department would be two areas that should see on-field results improve.

Actually (technically) it's reduced. Seven only gets 3.5 games per week on average, down from at least four. Fox has the right to on-sell a Saturday afternoon game, but it hasn't been exercised (the assumption is that they will sell it to 10 if the ACCC approves Foxtel buying into 10). Qld and NSW are special circumstances because of the guarantee on televising all local games on FTA and live, so we may still get four or occasionally five games more often.

Spot on.

I doubt our games will actually be broadcasted on the main channel. However, i do hope for this. Main channel exposure is a must, if we ever want to thrive as a club and back in the days when Channel 10 had the rights and gave us main channel exposure, we saw more people becoming interested in this code.

Fact is. If afl games remain on 7mate, nobody will really watch or pay attention to this club.

Nil, if ten sub lease every Saturday 3:20pm game then we get an extra .5 a game per round.

If they don't .5 a game less.

I hope it means the women's comp does start in 2017 instead of 2020 and that Brisbane has a team. We need anything that assists with participation that we can get in this town. 10 years of Lions non-success is taking some toll at the junior and community footy level.

Steele Tallon confirmed via twitter the other day the club is already looking at a women's team so looks promising

Sorry, post was badly worded. By 'we' I meant the victorian footy viewing public. Would just be nice to have 3 games on telly on a saturday. As far as the lions go, yeah it doesnt increase our odds of FTA games by much.

SEN repeated a tiny bit of an interview with Mr Ed. today. He said with all the money the AFL will have, it is the best chance they have to clean the slate for all clubs of all debt.

I had to agree with him:eek:

Still self-serving... The next words out of his mouth after that happens goes something along the lines of "we don't need equalisation, the poor clubs just got a hand out. leave our money aloneness!!!"

Yep, his only interest will be the clearing of debt rendering a tax on his club redundant. The only portion of other clubs' debts he would be concerned about, is the bit the big clubs are expected to help with.
This I can understand from a big club CEO or President, to an extent, but don't for one minute think that it comes from concern for clubs like ours.

The issue with that, is that some clubs will still run at a loss at different times, and the equalisation measures will be needed forever. They are crafted as a permanent, on going leveller, not a quick fix. What some of those arsehats don't get, is that the money generated and shared by all, relies on all and the national competition.
