I've been all over Jonathon Marsh (WA) for a while now. 194cm athletic KPF. Smallish Buddy.

Fun fact: He is the grandson of East Fremantle and South Fremantle's Ray Sorrell, who is a dual Sandover and Simpson medalist in the WAFL. Football's in his veins.

Is that accurate Essee? Have the official measurements at the combine been done?

Sydney cleverly generating another 'legitimate' loophole IMO.

Sydney just have him play for X years, back end load the deal as needed, include the "major injury insurance" (Buddy gets paid out if he "breaks down" to quote Swans boss) then (this being the unwritten gentlemen's agreement part) Buddy 'retires' at a mutually acceptable time then signs on as an AC and highly visible club marketing person on coin that doesn't come out of the Cap. Cap dollars go back in the bucket, Buddy gets the coin he wants (as opposed to the headline number), Buddy gets to be where he wants to be, gets an after-footy career, and the Hawks can't possibly match the headline offer.

Sydney offer lot more than Buddy's bottom line, never end up paying it, which makes it impossible for Hawthorn to match the deal.

.......
It doesn't work that way - well he wont get paid out in one hit. If Buddy's last 3 years of the contract are for $1.333mil/year and he has a career ending injury, then if he goes off the list, Sydney have to include the $4 mil in that year's salary cap. That would blow their cap.

From AFL Player Rules clause 10 TOTAL PLAYER PAYMENTS
10.21 Lump Sum Payments on Termination of Contracts
Unless otherwise determined by the Investigations Manager, all lump sum payments to a Player on termination of his Contract of Service shall be deemed to be Football Payments to the Player in the year in which such contract was terminated.

It's why Voss stayed on the 2007 list even though he didn't play. Brisbane would have breached the 2006 salary cap if they paid him out and removed him from their list at the end of 2006.

Some injury payments are inside the cap and some aren't. I can't work it out despite having read 2 CBA's from start to fiish and the AFL Player Rules. The definition of Total Player Payments specifically excludes several payments, but injury payments aren't included in those excluded items, yet when the AFL release their annual reports and the Total Player Earnings table there is an amount outside the cap called injury allowance. The amounts paid outside the cap between 2007 and 2012 are as follows as per page 63 of the 2012 AFL annual report.

$4,936,629(2007) $5,684,600(2008) $6,403,200(2009) $5,572,800(2010) $3,107,594(2011) $2,551,693(2012)

Here is a story about the AFL's concern of the Franklin deal and mentions the Voss situation. It basically says he is getting either less than Tippett or about the same in the first 2 years, and then $1mil+ in years 3-8 before backing off substantially in year 9.

http://www.news.com.au/sport/afl/af...r-lance-franklin/story-fndv8ujy-1226731187698
The league will investigate a potential $4 million-plus payout to Franklin that could be included in a single year if the 26-year-old is delisted or walks away after only five seasons.
The AFL will be prepared to save Sydney from itself by blocking the deal or ensuring the Swans significantly alter it.

The AFL confirmed it would investigate the deal, interviewing key Sydney officials to ensure they understand the ramifications if the deal backfires.

“As part of the review process by the AFL’s Legal, Integrity and Compliance Depart-ment, key people involved in the proposed Franklin arrangement — at this stage a non-binding offer of a nine-year deal — will be interviewed in the coming days,’’ the league said in a statement

....

Brisbane captain Michael Voss was paid $1 million in the 2007 salary cap under the final year of a back-ended deal despite being retired, a situation the league does not want multiplied over three or four years
http://www.news.com.au/sport/afl/af...r-lance-franklin/story-fndv8ujy-1226731187698

Then they compare Tippet and Franklin. Tippetts deal was $3.55mil over 4 years, see link for details
But the expectation is that Sydney’s extraordinary offer for Franklin, a year after the $900,000 a year Kurt Tippett coup, will see the allowance phased out.

That could happen over as many as three seasons, but the league is expected to respond to the competition-wide outrage over its use by Sydney.

Under AFL rules, if a player is delisted or retires early all of their salary must be included in a single year of the club’s salary cap.

The only way around that rule is to keep a player on the list despite them not playing, spreading the money out over several years.

Franklin’s deal is believed to be short of $1 million a season for the first two years, with a huge spike in years 3-8, before a drop-off in the final year.

So if he played until 31, then retired, Sydney could be forced into paying four seasons worth of a deal in one year of their cap.
Interesting thing is the AFL could force a change in the contract.
It would effectively mean they could not field a list given the salary cap commitments to Franklin, which is why the AFL is so determined to scrutinise the deal.

Sydney is determined to blow rivals including Greater Western Sydney out of the water with the nine-year deal.

But the league could eventually tell them to reduce the length of the deal or even out the payments over the term of the deal before it gives it the all-clear.

Trade radio.

He's been listed at 190 and 191cm around the interwebz but he's grown 3cm so his value has skyrocketed.
Thanks Essee. I knew he was at the 190-191 but if he truly has gotten to the 194 mark and still yet to turn 18, then as you say his value just skyrocketed. Probably past our pick unfortunately.

Not being a dick, but an actual question. With Hill being the main man to be tagged at Freo, does Fyfe get tagged often enough?

.
No because he is one of the worst uses of the football in the competition.

16.5% of his disposals are clangers. Lead the laegue by a fair margin with 92 c,langers for the year

Mitch Robinson 12.4% of his disposals are clangers just to put it into perspective.

You're a clanger.

I want Marsh something fierce. Now that he's grown to 194?!

Jesus H.

Seriously SERIOUSLY quick. I can't remember seeing someone his size with his burst pace (admittedly only seeing the U/18 championships).

so our interest is in matty white , polec , and power forwards. though hinks didnt seem particularly interested in jesse white or was he just playing it cool?

wonder what other power forwards could feasibly be shaken loose?

i only see jesse white (meh) , gumbleton (injury + wa player + sanction risk) and someone mentioned tayte pears as a forward but i had no idea whether that was stab in the dark or came from somewhere or whether the kid can actually play the position. i wouldnt give up more than a 3rd round pick for any of them. maybe sam day as a long long shot? or sam reid , who i agree is over-rated when people talk him up as a star but i like him and think he is quite good and can be a good forward in our side. think that if reid was available (sydney have him on a long term contract and may move him to chb) you would think a vic club would interest him and vic clubs would be in his ear.

on jono marsh he is described more as a tall flanker with incredible speed. i think 13 is too early if there is still more obvious likely to make it talent available.

if we can land matty white and polec i would be very happy.

His brother plays at Sydney.

Also he wishes he wasn't tall - would rather be a midfielder than a forward.

if marsh is at 194cm then he will attract big attention. could have been an error of speech though until we see other sources. supposedly not that great an overhead marker but not terrible. with his speed if you can find space you dont need to be a great mark anyway. though , to put marsh's 2nd best sprint time in context the number 1 ever is joel wilkinson. the guy who just got delisted from gc.

Rucci reckons the 3 power forwards to come up for trade are Jesse White Leigh Casbolt and Scott Gumbleton, but he reckons Port aren't interested in them.

Rowey then reckons
Josh Hall 197cms from Gold Coast and Hinkley is interested

Buddy is the worst star KPF when it comes to contested marking. Actually scratch that, over the last year or two he is terrible at marking fullstop. Is still one of the best players in the league though. If he (marsh) gets to our pick and is a genuine 194cm player with elite speed, would be real hard to overlook him I think.

Hall's an interesting one, 197cm ex high jump champ, rookie listed and unlikely to be upgraded. I remember he kicked a few in his debut game and looked the goods but hasn't done much since then.

As I posted several pages back re tall forwards from the afl's draft combine preview

http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threa...rafting-thread.1006010/page-183#post-30411229

Jonathon MarshClub: East Fremantle/Margaret River
D.O.B.: 17.10.1995
Height: 191cm
Weight: 89kg

Powerful and explosive tall forward with electrifying leg speed. Likes to take the opposition on and is capable of breaking a game apart. A long penetrating right foot with strong hands on the lead when marking. Gathered 22 disposals and four goals in his best game at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships against the Northern Territory.
