The list of tall defenders is out and we should take one of them with our second round pick:

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-08-14/combine-tall-defenders-named

Early favorites (Scharenberg will be gone by pick 8):

Fraser Fort
Club: Geelong Falcons/South Barwon
D.O.B.: 4.10.95
Height: 196cm
Weight: 84kg
Tall defender/forward who excels one-on-one and is powerful overhead. Impressed with his ability to win contested ball playing in defence in all five matches for Victoria Country in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships in 2013. Ideal type to play the swingman role at both ends.
If this guy is available, lock him in thanks Eddie. 196cm, excels one-on-one, wins contested ball, can swing up forward if needed. Sounds like a Carlisle type. Only question is whether he can stack on the weight, as 84 kg is pretty slight of build.

Darcy Gardiner
Club: Geelong Falcons/Queenscliff
D.O.B.: 22.9.95
Height: 192cm
Weight: 85kg
Tall defender who is rarely beaten one-on-one. Has the ability to shut down the opposition's most dangerous forward. This close-checking defender has pushed forward on occasions with some success; he keeps things simple, is strong overhead and makes good decisions with his execution by hand or foot. Represented Vic Country at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships in 2012 and 2013, winning All-Australian honours this year. Member of AIS-AFL Academy.
If Fort is gone (even the name is perfect - Fort from Port), and if we HAVE to go for a defender, this guy is the one. Same attributes, just not as tall. Which puts him in that Hombsch category that I think we already have covered.

SA
Cameron Giles
Club: Woodville West Torrens/Blyth Snowtown
D.O.B.: 5.5.95
Height: 195cm
Weight: 93kg
Tall defender who is quick and agile and has a big endurance base. Spots up his kicks well and rebounded effectively during the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, which was impressive given this season is his first in defence having previously played as a tall forward and ruckman. Generally makes good decisions with the ball in hand.

Jake Pitt
Club: Glenelg/Lucindale
D.O.B.: 4.4.95
Height: 192cm
Weight: 76kg
Athletic tall defender with good agility and is strong overhead with his ability to take intercept marks in defence. Team oriented player who works hard and has great endurance. Provided good run from defence for South Australia in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, averaging 13.2 disposals (at 85.3 per cent efficiency) and 4.8 handball receives in five matches in 2013.
Both of these two scream flankers to me - unique blend of speed and endurance. Pass. Plus they both play for loser clubs in the SANFL.

Would love fort or Giles, probably leaning more to fort. Having a 196cm defender who excels one on one would be perfect hopefully he can put on weight though.

Still wouldn't mind picking one of these two and rookie listing Joel Tippett as well

I'd say he may be even more likely to go if they get Roos as he'll want to draft players that he thinks will suit his football rather than trialing Polec. Build his own side by trading/drafting etc

Bugger bad attitude Polec, what about Billy Longer or Tom Rockliff??

We'd have to give up too much for them. With Polec, you could chip away at his value given he has been injured and only played 1 game for them this year. If we could get him for a second rounder it would go some way towards redemption for the Jacobs disaster.

Also, Rockliff is still under contract.

I get butterflys in my stomach just thinking about the fact we are now attractive to interstate based players.

It's like the club has gone to the gym, got on the roids and got shredded.

Now all the chicks who were like "Eww, get away from me loser." are like "Omg, come back to my place"

And we are gonna be like "No."

Pitt is a tall flanker, similar in playing style to O'Shea.

Fort is our best bet, should be around in the 2nd round but could also go in the 20s. He's certainly a defender first and doesn't worry so much about rebounding, a very ungainly and uncoordinated looking kid too. His versatility and ability to swing forward is also appealing. He kicked 3 in his last game which is certainly handy.

Gardiner will be gone by Geelong's pick at the latest so don't even bother.

I really like Giles as a rebounding defender but he is probably not for us. He is much more keen on running off and getting a kick than actually playing on a man so it negates the purpose of drafting a 195cm+ backman. I'm not too sure how to post a youtube video properly but here is a link to his sanfl highlights.

Wont our second pick be in the 20's?
