I take you to mean older veteran for leadership. McVeigh?
Not sure that McVeigh would be the answer. The backline has their leader in Simpson and will be strengthened when Docherty returns next year.

It's the midfield that needs the mature and experienced, yet still productive senior player. Who though?

A Jack Trengove would have been handy...

It's a tough one, but I'd probably trade it down. One more 18 year old, no matter how good he is, won't fill all the holes that need filling.

In 2016 Freo traded down Pick 3 (Hugh McGluggage) and turned it into:

Griffin Logue - Pick 7
Sean Darcy - Pick 34
Cam McCarthy - eq Pick 71
Luke Ryan - Pick 72

As good as McGluggage is, where we were at it was a no-brainer to fill 4 spots than 1.

Do you think if you make big claims then you should provide more proof?

I think if I could magically change one big thing it would be that all users either qualify their claims as guesses or unsupported assumptions, or provide reasonable proof based on the size of the claim.

"To me, that player looked flat today," is a claim you can get away without providing a pile of evidence. "That player is definitely on the PEDs and got his cousin pregnant" would require a lot more proof.

It would make the place a heap easier to read and take part in.
I don’t think suggesting that SOS has influence outside his actual role is a big claim. Especially not on your exaggerated level of PEDs etc more on the level of “I reckon player x is injured but is playing through it” (note: I’ve never said I agree with caros exaggerated wording either)

I really doubt you’re actually considering making that happen though. Half the boards would have 0 posts.

Appreciate what you're trying to say, but McCarthy was a first round pick

I think you may have wires crossed here. In no way am I discussing proving a negative.

All available? I think there’s been plenty of failed rebuilds, as a Melbourne supporter I can vouch for that
If you say someone is doing something, but don’t have any evidence, what is there but proving a negative?

Yes. On ALL available evidence, meaning all clubs. And there is definitely a trend that clubs who recruit enough young talent rise up the ladder at some point. Even the Dees.

I’d suggest on a football forum, you expecting journal grade evidence for something to be discussed is far too high.
I’ve not said you can’t discuss anything. And I don’t expect journal grade evidence. But if you say something is so and can’t back it up, don’t be surprised when another poster comes along and shits all over your reasoning.

Anyway, I’m done with this discussion. It’s pointless. Believe whatever you want.

Potential player-coaches to assist with short term development.

Jarryd Roughead
Mark LeCras
Nick Smith
Justin Westhoff
Jarryd McVeigh
Lee Spurr

Would be really nice to have some players with a little bit of composure.
The current Carlton list fret too much and turn it over.

Carlton will be fine eventually, they just need to stick it out. It takes longer these days once you get into their position, There are now more teams, no early priority picks and free agency. What i find most disappointing about them though, is in round 1 they were able to chase, tackle and play with real intensity against us. Since then, that has been non existent.

Lee Spurr? Just turned 30, out of contract, already part of the leadership group. Would probably be a DFA

We had 12 players today 21 or under. Of the players over the age of 21 you can include such A graders as Shaw, Wright, Graham, Casboult Jones, and Lobbe, who are VFL players+ at best.

Our starting 8 in the midfield (including rotations) was Cripps, E Curnow, Murphy (so far so good) then Fisher (2nd year), SPS (2nd year), Dow (1st year), Polson (2nd year) and Kennedy (3rd year - no preseason due to shoulder injury and has missed several games with an ankle this year, 29th game).

We had Lobbe rucking to them.

Down back it was Simpson (so far so good) then Weitering, Marchbank (4th year - has missed about 2 of them with injury, 30th game), Obrien (1st year), JSOS, Shaw (spud), Jones (Injured in the 2nd and didnt play the second half).

Up forward we had C Curnow, McKay (3rd year, missed 1 year with injury, 10th game) Pickett (4th year, has missed about two due to injuries including a lisfranc and broken arm, 14th game), Casboult and Wright.

Due to injuries we have had to rotate 17 players through the Backline this year. We were two down on the bench by half time again this game. We now have had the worst injury run of all sides in the AFL. For a team with a bunch of kids in their 1st, 2nd and 3rd years, this is far from ideal.

We're basically playing Cripps, Murphy (when he hasnt been injured, which has been half the year), Simpson, a handfull of potatoes and a TAC cup squad.
It's been a torrid year for the Blues and their fans and you're right injuries play such a huge part for teams and the Blues have had it as bad as anybody. The facts are they have had only 8 players play 16 games(all bar 1 game) and only 4 play every game, by comparison North have had 15 play 16 games and 10 play all the games and everybody is wetting their pants on how they have fast tracked their rebuild. I bet if the fortunes were reversed the Blues season would look very different and we'd be talking about how bleak things are for North.

And we just lost two of those four to season ending injuries - Fisher and Jones.

Now we've got just Cripps and SPS who are a chance to play every game.

Anthony Miles and Sam Lloyd playing in our VFL team, both are just on the fringed of selection but both mature and dominate the VFL and both have shown good AFL form when called upon, if Carlton don't target these two as priority mature age recruits then Carlton aren't fair dinkum about this rebuild.

How has Miles been when called up to the senior side?

Not opposed to giving him an opportunity as a DFA, but we already have a midfielder who dominates VFL level but struggles whenever called up to senior level.

Lloyd I've always thought was a reasonable footballer and wouldn't mind bringing him across.

Just a random question as I didnt really see the Fisher trip in its entirety - how was that not a tripping charge against the player that got him?

Just put a bullet in us...
it's not all bad the likes of Curnow, SPS, Fisher, Dow etc have all got a good block of games together this year and Kennedy and Weitering have built into their work. Throw a Docherty in and a better run with injuries and there will be plenty to look forward to next year

These losing margins are not exactly thrashings for a bottom of the ladder team. There have been no repeat mauling.... they look respectable.

Obviously not a great season, but if they bounce back next year people might look at these margins differently.

Miles has only played six games in the past two seasons. Unfortunately Richmond's style has moved beyond him. Not the big bull they need, but Carlton could do worse for someone prepared to put his head over the ball. Will be 27 in February.

Lloyd has good skills and stamina but is a touch short for a forward and a touch slow for a mid. At 29 in March he's probably not quite what they're looking for.

During 2018 we have had 32 players on our list impacted by injuries. The graphic below is up to date to last week, Liam Jones and Zac Fisher have been added this week. We will maybe have 5 or 6 listed players in our seconds team this week. I think 13 of 18 games this year we have had in game injuries of 1 or more players. For a team that was already picked by most as a bottom four prospect for 2018 this type of carnage is maybe at the very least some of the reason for the poor showing this year.
