Most cricket followers don't like the idea of a ten team World Cup. Those that do will probably be convinced it's a bad idea come late June next year.

I've asked the question of what format the World Cup should be, in which I stated my own preference for a 20 team tournament. I've also attacked ODI status as being a relic from the past, which the World Cup Qualifiers have surely confirmed. After all, everyone beat everyone during the tournament. There was no big gap in skill between the top and the bottom, which is supposedly the main justification for the shrinking of the World Cup.

A little while back I simulated a tournament to demonstrate that the nations of the West Indies would be able to survive on their own as cricketing nations, and the simulation backed that theory up. I have continued promoting this idea ever since (to the dismay of PhatBoy).

So, building on these things, I present to you: the Alternative World Cup! A 24 team tournament with four groups of six, followed by knock-out finals. I am yet to decide whether to go with the top two in each group play quarter finals immediately, or whether to do the proposed 2nd vs 3rd matches before them. If anyone has a preferences then feel free to mention it

The groups were divided according to their seeds. For the Caribbean nations, I seeded them according to their relative quality, while all the other nations were based on their ODI rankings or their World Cricket League places.

Code:
Group A Group B Group C Group D
England India New Zealand South Africa
Bangladesh Pakistan Australia Sri Lanka
Afghanistan Ireland Barbados Zimbabwe
Netherlands Trinidad & Tobago Jamaica Scotland
Nepal Papua New Guinea Hong Kong United Arab Emirates
Guyana Namibia Canada Windward and Leeward Islands

Each team has a thirteen man squad, based on their most recent teams, though a couple of liberties have been taken where necessary. The pitches throughout will be randomly chosen by me, and I will pick teams accordingly, trying to replicate a real-life tournament with horses for courses selection (for conditions and form).

The traumatic events of the WCQ have convinced you to create an alternate reality where the ICC cares about growth of the game. This obsession is not healthy. The ICC will never care.

Nah I was going to do it anyway (as part of my proving that Barbados etc can survive on their own). Too late to go back now, join the fun! Here's a World Cup where every game matters and some unexpected results are guaranteed!

Reading a lot of Tim Wigmore and Peter Della Penna on Twitter and their articles, heaps of people at the ICC care about the development of cricket in different nations. The problem is countries like England and India have such a sway over the ICC that they drive the direction of the game.

Scotland: Kyle Coetzer, Matthew Cross, Matt Machan, Calum MacLeod, Preston Mommsen, Richie Berrington, Con de Lange, Josh Davey, Safyaan Sharif, Mark Watt, Brad Wheal, Chris Sole, Michael Leask

Any chance you replace Machan, Mommsen & de Lange with Wallace/Jones, Main & Tom Sole? I am really interested in the simulation and would love to see the Scots as realistic as possible. As much as I wish they were Mommsen and Machan aren't coming back :( and I actaully rate T Sole over de Lange tbh.

Machan (who retired due to injury) and de Lange were toss-ups, so yes, but Mommsen is, I think, justified, because he would absolutely be playing at a World Cup like this. And because this sim relies on existing stats, I generally prefer using players with more games under the belt where possible.

Day 1 - England vs Netherlands
Fresh pitch first up, a bit of pace, some movement, not much for the spinners. England will want to avoid another embarassment at home against the Dutch, as at the 2009 World T20.

Like most cricket games & simulations, it doesn't take into account the match situation. England would've scored more than 252, Afghanistan would've been more urgent.

Day 2 - Guyana vs Nepal
Green pitch, plenty for the seamers, but these two teams are spin-dominant. There's a bit for the spinners.

Like most cricket games & simulations, it doesn't take into account the match situation. England would've scored more than 252, Afghanistan would've been more urgent.

It's doing pretty well given it came out 17 years ago. Thankfully I've figured out how to add in strike rates for batsmen, but it's hard for it to fuly adjust to the higher rates. But everyone's on the same playing field, so it evens out.
