I disagree. We could use another inside mid but the way we play doesn’t require a Tom Mitchell type, or for stats to be racked up with chips across half back. We don’t play the possession game.

if we changed our style, I’m sure Cotchin, Martin and others could go back to the bigger numbers but why on earth would we want to do that?

It’s harder to stop a team that doesn’t rely on one or two guys getting big numbers every week. We play pressure and meterage. It stands up in finals.

I think Brisbane are looking pretty similar with what they are trying to do. This makes Neale an interesting player for them with his ability to put up big numbers within that system. It will be interesting to see how that develops.

I don't have a clear enough opinion and I can see too many biases interfering in any attempt to assess the four teams, the most obvious of which are based on the team the assessor supports (or, if they claim neutrality, the one they hate the most). Recency bias is mentioned often on these forums, but there is I think an equal tendency which works in the other direction based on nostalgia. Attempts then are made to counter the subjective bias by using stats. There is finally some recognition, for instance, that looking at disposals is fairly meaningless. Most obviously, with regard to my own team, which has established its success with a game style that deliberately eliminates meaningless possessions. So, for instance, both Cotchin and Martin had a higher average disposal for game in 2016 than in any year since. This would call into question just about any supposedly "objective" data based assessment (including I would argue AA nominations) until someone achieves the holy grail sought by CD of a meaningful statistical metric.

Prestia is the perfect example of what makes a good player, and it isn't constant accumulation. Runnaway B&F winner in a Premiership year and barely gets acknowledged. Gun player who never wastes a possession.

Your concepts are interesting OP. Though there has probably never been a time in the AFL era where stats have been less important. I don't think any club will find answers to beating the Richmond game from statistics.

The only constant for Richmond is they are top 2 for clangers each of the past 4 years. Perhaps that is the message ... either have 'divine skills' to control the football (some teams have done this with some success against Richmond) or be prepared to push the envelope and risk making mistakes and appearing a fool. You learn from your clangers.

I use a unique balance statistic and i have done every team game by game all the way down to Carlton on the ladder, this statistic shows Richmond had two negative results for the year both against the Port Adelaide Power. Round 11 was (+42 to -15) and the Preliminary Final was (+20 to -6) it must be said Richmond made seven changes game to game and Port Adelaide made five changes to the playing personnel. Here is a brief statistical overview of those two games Port Adelaide on the left and Richmond on the right.

Richmond overall had a very low clearance rating for the year in fact 17th, but realized the only way to beat the Power was to negate the clearance which had a flow on effect to their scoring shots, the Metres Gained went up with the Kick to Handball Ratio which is expected. The other major difference in the games was the personnel changes which i mentioned above. Port Adelaide were the only side not to have a negative balance game for the season although they did have a single digit result five times, three of which were losses.

Major In: Nankervis. 10/10 rating from Fox sports, only 10 given. Besides those match saving marks, he had the most tackles on the ground 10. He out bodied the big pack of Port Mids which was a major reason for winning clearances. Cotchin back in also helped in that respect. Nankervis is one of the ants you mention, may not look effective, but Richmond were so much better once he was back.

So there we go Geelong were the first team to ten players in total disposal terms, i can hear you screaming, but the teams that play finals have the right to more games and yes that is true it is an advantage of sorts, but it also helps point out the accumulation point in terms of Richmond who played the same number of games as Geelong. Hardly the realm of the contender more the realm of the rebuild or another less offensive word of your own choosing. Lots of role players who traditionally occupy low disposal attracting roles present as well as a few older players clinging on to their careers and more than a few who will not be on lists in 2021 because they are not part of the next premiership tilt good old chestnut at review time that one. A few long term injured players present which cannot be planned for and is unfortunate.

That has probably represented the Ark Of Accumulation enough even emptying out the smaller cabins, maybe it gives a window to contention and a look at where teams have to aspire to to be a contender, maybe it illustrates class deficiencies and the like, who knows ?

So obviously the teams that make finals have access to more games and therefore should be at the top of the list, but 2020 was an unusual year with many disruptions to what is accepted as normal events in terms of game location as well as time between games etc. The lists are useful for determining where the ruckman for instance fits into your group even though with some teams it does not happen and is a point of weakness. If you look at Geelong and Richmond you can see how strong they are in the first two measured segments Geelong 19 out of a possible 20 and Richmond 17 out of a possible 20 which does point to great depth, but both teams were without key players at various points of the year.

Now some people may say how can you use Metres Gained and Marks to signify Pressure the third element, well both apply pressure or control on games in their own way. Tackles is the old time measure of effort and Intercepts help show the new age of football where teams grid up and press up to condense the playing area. Now clearly on the last two ladders by the time say Essendon (18th for Marks) completed their ten players some of the top sides would have been almost up to twenty players maybe even more, but it does give a loose indication of what needs to be corrected or adjusted in order to head up the ladder.
