Hi all

I thought an ashes thread would be great over summer.

I love the ashes and hope Australia flog the POMS.

The first test doesn't bode well for our bowling attack, however, I still think we can win.

What is everyone's opinions and will be good to discuss and analyze each test in this thread.

I'm hoping but not overly optimistic we retain the ashes.

I feel like Australia has surrendered a fortress level strength by not having the first test of the summer in Brisbane anymore. It always seemed to throw off touring sides and we start 1-0

IMO I'd still like Brisbane as test 1

I'd want to retain the Boxing day test in Melbourne

And I'd want to switch out the Sydney test to another date As it always rains heavy in Sydney during January. The test ends up being a draw.

I love the Adelaide test with the pink ball. Makes for entertaining viewing

But not all Freo supporters will support the same cricket team

or is that what you hoping for .

I don't care who or what you or other Freo supporters support outside of Freo

There will be many on here who support Australia and some England and others who don't post as they don't like cricket

Is this ok with you or should I cancel the thread incase in offends a fellow poster who doesn't support Australia?

I like the idea of a thread here for it. Other than a bit of politics I don’t venture far from the Freo board now. The internet is just too fractured now.
I’m a bit hot & cold with the Aussie team. I was fanatical when the Waugh’s, Ponting, Gillie etc were playing and as a kid with Lillee, Thommo, Chappell brothers, Rod Marsh etc but they lost me at times with guys like Warner, Michael Clarke. Even Smith kind of annoys me as does Marnus whatever his name.
I don’t mind the Cummings era but it shits me they keep rolling out 40yo’s instead of blooding more new talent.

I think that England have an opportunity with Hazelwood and Cummins out but if they don't win the first test they are done. Don't think Archer and Wood will make much difference as they haven't played consistent test cricket due to injury. Australia to win 3-1 (Sydney to continue to be a waste of time).

I'm younger

I started watching when Border was captain. He was a tough nut. Him and Boon etc facing the West Indies quicks was a sight of bravery personified.

No helmets for some blokes and balls hissing past their ears at express pace.

Oh God yeah. How could I have forgotten AB. He was captain when World Series 50 stuff started. We had a life sized cardboard AB in the lounge & used to salute it with cans of VB when the games were on.

And the Windies in their pomp. One of the great things I’ve seen was Kim Hughes defying them at the G when they skittled the rest of the team.

I’m old enough to remember being a schoolboy at the WACA watching Lillee & Thomo destroy the Poms. You could hear from the boundary the sound of the ball thumping into their ribs like a bat hitting a side of meat. No protection beyond pads & gloves. Cowdrey was photographed black & blue from the waist up the next day.
Truly terrifying.

It's a hard one to pick the result. I think we will win, but I can't see 5-0 being on the cards.

We'll have to sit down and drink some beers during one of the Tests when we're both on holidays.

Absolutely speaking my language! On every single point you’ve made here. As a young kid in primary school it was the Lillee-Marsh era that got me into cricket. I used to spend hours counting the seven WA boys in the test team. I mean if didn’t change much from that seven, but I counted them regularly all the same.
Then Warnie, Gilly, Ponting - that was a great time to be Australian. This current, and recent past, team is very ‘meh’ for me.

That last point in particular annoys me too. The players seem to have a lot more of a mortgage on their positions than in other sports. It's almost a case of jobs for the boys. They may be best available, it's a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy as nobody else gets a chance to ply their craft in a Test setting.

I'm pissed cause I go to the cricket to watch the likes of Cummins and Hazelwood

But I'm excited to watch our B attack embarrass those campaigners
I'm excited to see Boland string a number of home tests together. He's still A grade.

Doggett, yeh B grade but he's in form. England will target him and that always creates opportunities.

Is Lyon A grade on the Perth Stadium pitch? I don't know.

On paper their batting line up is dangerous, but can they produce in Australian conditions? Perth should be a good test for them.

Surely Neser gets the nod over Doggett?
