He's taken 60 wickets at just over 30 and a strike rate of 58 in his first 17 tests, which isn't elite but it's a lot better than average.

Starc can still be a bit erratic at test level, still has that 1 half tracker every over, but right now he's our most dangerous looking bowler and when he gets it right his inswinging yorker is unplayable. The Brett Lee to Haze's McGrath.

A lot of people didn't rate Brett Lee either. But in the end he was the 2nd most successful Australian fast bowler of the last 30 years.

The thing is it doesn't really matter if you spray the odd delivery in test matches, as long as you can produce unplayable ones that lead to wickets. That's something that describes Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson and now Mitchell Starc. What matters in test matches is strike rate rather than average, since the major challenge of a test match is to bowl the other team out twice.
