Jatz jd2010 BlueBen elhadjihenry Read a headline earlier that apparently Blues announced a $2m loss - any cause for concern?
Don't think so, mate, but it's obviously not a great look.

There's not much I envy about Richmond, but one thing that I do envy is that club's supporter passion and dedication. Richmond haven't been a contender since 1982 and yet they have 70,000 members. We have a few bad years and the members drop off completely, which of course affects the bottom line.

This is the team by the way:

Fremantle’s team of the AFL era

B: Roger Hayden, Luke McPharlin, Antoni Grover

HB: Dale Kickett, Michael Johnson, Shane Parker

C: Stephen Hill, David Mundy, Paul Hasleby

HF: Michael Walters, Peter Mann, Ryan Crowley

F: Hayden Ballantyne, Matthew Pavlich, Jeff Farmer

R: Aaron Sandilands, Nat Fyfe, Peter Bell

I: Michael Barlow, Justin Longmuir, Stephen O’Reilly, Paul Duffield

O'Reilly only did one good thing in his career. Not sure the Carlton fans would agree though.

Needs more Chris Bond! :thumbsu:

If memory serves me right, we were ranked the worst of the AFL era. Expected to be down there but was hoping we'd at least pip maybe Melbourne lol. :$

You mean besides our catchy song and cool colours right? ;)

I think we've generally had a large fan base but just struggled to convert those into members - understandable when you've had 3 decades of SFA. Back in 2010, we only had about 35k members so we've effectively doubled our numbers since then and I think a large portion of that is due to the 'modernising' of the club. With sound operators like Benny Gale (CEO), Gary March and then Peggy O'Neill we've been kicking a lot of goals off field (clearing debt, growing our membership numbers and revenue streams).

I think the important ingredient is it seems most of the key people at the club are in sync with each other and the direction of the club should be heading. Think that is also supported by our relatively affordable membership prices and a decent (by Richmond standards) footy department/coaching set up - 3 (if not shortlived) finals campaigns is very good by our standards lol. I think another underrated thing was having a clear vision and strategy. While some mocked it, I think the 3-0-75 plan was a big success (even if we fell short on 2 of the goals) as it helped drive the club to improve with ambitious targets to work towards.

I think the remarkable thing is if we can get that elusive win in a final, it might increase again.

I could be wrong about Carlton but from what I've heard from mates and co workers of the Blues affinity, it seems (at least when Malthouse was at the club) the supporter base is a bit disillusioned with some of the senior people at the club and the decisions they have made. I know a few who are still upset that Ratten was sacked, others who are dumbfounded as to why players like Betts, Waite, Garlett, Jacobs etc were let go. I think Carlton the club needs to (if they haven't already) communicate to the fanbase what they want to achieve in the next 2-3 years and try to get the supporters (particularly any disillusioned ones) back on side. Hopefully a new coach and a slew of early draft picks will help get some more fans back on the membership train.

I reckon if the club had a bit of a reboot at the top (maybe a new CEO, president etc to go along with Brendon), it might help in the long run. New ideas and fresh perspectives to help revitalise the club. No doubt if Carlton get their act together, there is no reason they can't get to 70k plus members also IMO.

yep, new board giving support to Bolton, a young innovative coach, for an extended period of time will help them move up the ladder.

SO there's a board spill happening at Carlton! Finally!
As much as I don't rate the current president now is not the time for this kind of thing. This spill is the old-Carlton way, with old-Carlton people. We've just made finally some good off-field appointments in Bolton & SOS, have cleared out the dead-beat assistant coaches & all the players that don't want to fight to get the club back up. A spill at this point of time undermines all that and could hurt us in the long run if they are after short term fixes.

I'm hoping this call for a spill just brings about a bit more openness from the current board with tangible targets for them off the field that they can be held accountable for in about 2 years time. That's when they should be called into action and removed if they aren't reaching debt, profit & membership targets not now

Bolton, the whole assistant coach team & list manager have just been hired under this president and CEO. New CEOs & presidents often like to get their own people into the club and these new members of staff won't be given a fair go

I should have waited before I got excited. Apparently it's Tom leading the spill. If true, he can **** right off.

I'm not against him coming in (he'd know his dad is an arrogant fool) but not right now. Let's just make this board accountable to some targets off field over the next 2 years and then call the fat idiot out for the crap leader that he is.

You should be. He has the same ideology as his old man. That shit worked 30 years ago, not now.

Strong comments from a blues legend. Have to say I agree with him too.

“He is the highest paid player at Carlton, which is ridiculous. Has been there for two years and done nothing. Dale, I do not want to see you doing any media – like I don’t want to see you doing interviews and jumping around being a clown at training. I want to see you put your head down and your arse up, and deliver something to the club.” - Robert Walls

Walls has been irrelevant for years.

As has already been stated here, last year was not Daisy's fault. Just incredibly bad luck for all concerned. Also, one of the key reasons he was here was because he wasn't introverted. His happy demeanor will be important in what's likely to be a very tough reason.

Walls, like McClure, can do one. Piss back off to France and enjoy retirement.

Disagree. He's done 3/5 of SFA at Carlton. Doesn't matter if it's bad management, bad luck, bad footballer. It simply does not matter. He's your highest paid player and needs to actually perform within the realm of what would be expected as a result. Time to extract the digit.

Fitness permitting Bolton and Co should be setting him the challenge of top 5 B&F. It shouldn't be that difficult given how poorly Carlton's list at present drops off from about the best 6-8 players. As iirc the only premiership player on Carlton's list he should leave the jovial lairising to others, should be trying to be a leader for a young group of players unaware of what it takes to go all the way.

I don't know why I see and hear so many Carlton fans denigrate or dismiss things that past players like Walls and like McClure say. They're not afraid to give the harsh but true feedback for the club they bleed for.

Reeks of the truth hurting and from my comfy spot on the couch in 2015 it seemed to me that more often than not McClure's criticisms of Carlton were warranted and accurate and the easiest way to stop that is to improve as a team and Dale Thomas focusing on being a leader at the club rather than morale manager will certainly help.
