The afl would be stupid not to think about the overseas markets. The worlds getting a lot smaller and easier to watch overseas sports. This is leading to more Aussie kids being more into EPL and NBA than they are AFL which didn't use to be the case at all.

Both are world games, no one gives a shite bout afl.
You'd be surprised at how open minded Americans and poms are to new sports. It won't ever challenge their local sports but even capturing 0.05% of the U.K. or USA as new players or followers is an extra 100k in each. For a small sport that's massive

They know that they're now having to share the 25-30m population here with more sports because of how easy it is to follow the EPL and NBA regularly. In the 70s and 80s the game had a bigger share of the overall Australian population support it

At the expense of the existing product? The people that actually watched last night weren't really impressed.

I'd love to know the coin/man hours the AFL has invested in this product.
What expense to the existing product? It's never going to replace afl it'll be a pre or post season game. No impact injuries while getting kms into players clubs would love that. With a shortened JLT meaning more serious squads put out in that format a u21 style aflx in pre season would be a good way for clubs/fans to see their kids play

Wait until there is an injury. Some kid does his ACL. Is it worth being out for the season for AFLX?

It's a pointless exercise in Australia. It fills a void that doesn't exist and isn't needed.

The argument also of "footy early/mid feb? Yes please" or "its just a bit of fun"

Do we really need a bit of fun? do we really need footy that early? It's just unnecessary for me. It's money grab, yet some of the hardcores cant see that

Suggestions:

-Make AFLX an U/23 competition.

-Get rid of the silver balls.

-Sort out the 'Zooper' goal a.k.a get rid of it.

There is some potential there. Just needs a tidy up. The likely hood of injury in AFLX seems pretty limited, just as likely to injure yourself at training.

JLT series will probably see more serious teams now with only 2 games, which can only benefit it. Instead of games where Richmond may decide to just field 15 players in the final quarter.

I also don't think the excuse of "There is only 2 JLT games and AFLX is the only opportunity to see youngsters if there are strong teams in the JLT" is good enough.

I'll can easily go watch the reserves play their upcoming state league trial games and any decent AFL player that needs to be eased in for fitness purposes can play there too.

More players will get injured across 3 rounds of JLT last year than there will be this year with 2 rounds + aflx I can almost guarantee that. And if doesn't it's because the 2 rounds of JLT have seen injuries rise through the roof which further enhances the point. Last night was bruise free footy with all clubs walking away with no serious injuries.

And it certainly fills a void that exists making the game more accessible to people outside the 20-30m that live here. The afl don't want to be sitting ducks as the NBA, EPL & NFL continue to grow their support here while they do nothing to make the sport more accessible to the 100s of millions of people around the world.

It's not a money grab here at all. The afl would be happy to break even with this trial, make tweaks to it and then see what they can do overseas with it. Even overseas they'll be happy to break even with aflx alone as it is aimed to bring in people to the proper game. The overseas league pass I think is $100-150 a year. If they can bring in 20,000 new sign ups around the world at $150 a year that's just under $4m made for a product that already exists. Costs to get those sign ups wouldn't rise a great deal because the service is already set up albeit to a smaller pool

Then why don't they play the game overseas where they're supposedly trying to get a foothold? People passionate about AFL aren't interested in it here, so why bother playing it here?

I actually agree with Faith on this one (might be a first). Forget trying to appeal to O/S markets an instead worry about getting bigger crowds to GWS/GC.

Or better yet, put a team in ******* Tasmania already!

Why would you put a team in Tasmania? Would be stupid.

How are they going to do an ACL? They're just as likely to do an ACL running laps at training..

They're trialling it here. They said as much last night that won't be the finished product of the game they take overseas. No point trialling an unfinished product in markets that don't know much about the game to start with. When it's taken overseas money will be spent promoting it so they'd want to be sure it's something they want to go through with
